Additional information

This program is designed for patients with esophageal cancer who may require surgical removal of the affected segment of the esophagus followed by reconstruction using the stomach (esophagogastrostomy).
Treatment is performed at Sheba Medical Center — a Top-10 globally ranked medical center, experienced in complex oncological and reconstructive surgery.
Treatment Concept
Esophagogastrostomy is a key reconstructive procedure performed after esophagectomy, where the remaining esophagus is connected to the stomach to restore the natural passage of food.
This approach is typically considered when:
the tumor is located in the lower or middle esophagus
the stomach can be safely used for reconstruction
the goal is to restore swallowing function with the most physiological method available
The treatment strategy focuses not only on tumor removal but also on functional recovery and quality of life after surgery.
Key Advantages
Expertise in esophagectomy with esophagogastrostomy reconstruction
Focus on restoring natural swallowing function
Personalized treatment plan after on-site evaluation
Multidisciplinary oncology team (surgery + oncology + recovery)
Approach aimed at reducing complications and the likelihood of repeat procedures through precise planning
Why This Approach
When feasible, esophagogastrostomy is often preferred because:
it uses the patient’s own stomach for reconstruction
requires fewer surgical connections compared to alternative techniques
supports a more direct restoration of gastrointestinal continuity
However, suitability depends on individual anatomy and disease characteristics.
