Pediatric Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant for Leukemia (ALL, AML, CML)

Sheba Medical Center – Personalized, Advanced Care for Children
JCI-Accredited | Ranked Among the World’s Top 10 Hospitals by Newsweek 2026

At Sheba Medical Center, we understand that a diagnosis of leukemia in a child changes everything for a family. Our Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program is designed to provide not only world-class medical care, but also reassurance, compassion, and hope at every step.

As one of the world’s leading pediatric transplant centers, Sheba combines decades of experience with cutting-edge therapies to perform allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, a transplant using healthy stem cells from a donor, for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

For children with high-risk, relapsed, or treatment-resistant leukemia, allogeneic transplantation often offers the strongest chance for long-term cure.

When is an Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant Needed?

For many children, leukemia can be successfully treated with chemotherapy. However, in certain situations - such as relapse, resistance to treatment, or aggressive disease, an allogeneic bone marrow transplant becomes the most effective treatment option.

In an allogeneic transplant, the child receives healthy stem cells from a donor. These cells rebuild the bone marrow and create a new immune system capable of recognizing and fighting leukemia cells.

This approach is commonly recommended for:

High-risk ALL or AML
Relapsed leukemia
Leukemia that does not respond fully to standard therapy
Selected cases of CML and other complex hematologic conditions

A Personalized Approach to Every Child

No two children are the same, and neither are their treatments.

At Sheba, every child is evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric hemato-oncology and transplant specialists who carefully determine the optimal treatment strategy, timing, conditioning regimen, and donor source.

Whenever possible, a matched sibling donor is preferred. If a sibling match is not available, Sheba actively secures the best possible alternative donor using advanced matching technologies and international donor registries.

Donor options include:

Matched unrelated donors through global donor programs
Haploidentical (partial-match) family donors, often parents
Cord blood transplantation

With advanced HLA and molecular laboratories on-site, Sheba performs highly precise donor matching to maximize safety and transplant success.

Advanced Transplant Techniques

Sheba Medical Center is recognized internationally for utilizing some of the most advanced transplant technologies available today, including:

T-cell depletion and CD34+ selection to reduce complications and improve transplant outcomes
Integration of CAR-T cell therapy prior to transplant in selected high-risk leukemia cases
Access to innovative clinical trials and advanced cellular therapies
Personalized conditioning and supportive care protocols tailored for children

These advanced approaches allow Sheba to safely treat even highly complex or previously difficult-to-treat cases.

World-Class Outcomes

Sheba’s Pediatric BMT program consistently achieves outcomes aligned with leading international transplant centers:

ALL & AML (first or second remission): approximately 75–85% success rates
Improved outcomes in relapsed leukemia through integration of advanced cellular therapies
Strong long-term survival and quality of life for pediatric patients

Our continuous research, innovation, and clinical expertise help provide children with the best possible opportunity for cure and recovery.

Precision, Safety, and Specialized Pediatric Care

Children undergoing transplantation are cared for in dedicated pediatric transplant units designed specifically for safety, comfort, and healing.

Care includes:

Highly protected, child-friendly environments
Advanced infection prevention systems
Continuous monitoring by experienced pediatric transplant specialists
Comprehensive supportive care throughout every phase of treatment and recovery

Every aspect of care is adapted to support children physically, emotionally, and developmentally.

Care Beyond Treatment

At Sheba, families receive continuous guidance, emotional support, and clear communication throughout every stage of care. Our multidisciplinary team includes physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, and international patient coordinators.

From diagnosis through long-term follow-up, we remain closely involved, helping each child not only overcome leukemia, but return to a healthy and fulfilling life.
