Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation) for Pediatric Neuroblastoma

Sheba Medical Center – Advanced, Personalized Transplant Care for Children

At Sheba Medical Center, we understand how challenging it is for families to face a diagnosis of neuroblastoma. This complex childhood cancer requires not only advanced medical expertise, but also compassionate, family-centered care.

For children with high-risk or relapsed neuroblastoma, bone marrow transplantation (BMT) plays a vital role in treatment offering a powerful approach aimed at improving long-term outcomes and giving children the best possible chance for recovery.

Our pediatric transplant program combines world-leading expertise, innovative therapies, and a supportive environment designed specifically for children and their families.

When is a Bone Marrow Transplant Needed?

In neuroblastoma, bone marrow transplantation is typically part of an intensive treatment strategy and may be recommended when:

The disease is high-risk at diagnosis
Neuroblastoma has spread beyond the original tumor site
The disease returns after initial treatment

BMT allows doctors to use high-dose therapy to eliminate cancer cells, followed by the infusion of healthy stem cells to restore the bone marrow and immune system.

Types of Transplant
Autologous Transplant (Child’s Own Cells)

For most children with neuroblastoma, this is the standard approach.

Stem cells are collected from the child in advance
High-dose therapy is delivered to target remaining cancer cells
The child’s own cells are reinfused to rebuild healthy bone marrow

In selected cases, tandem (double) transplants may be recommended to further strengthen treatment outcomes.

Allogeneic Transplant (Donor Cells)

While autologous transplantation is the most common approach, Sheba Medical Center also offers advanced allogeneic (donor) transplantation for carefully selected cases.

This option may be considered for:

Children who need an alternative stem cell source
Children who require an additional therapeutic strategy after prior treatment

Donor Options at Sheba include:

Matched sibling donors, when available
Matched unrelated donors through international registries
Haploidentical (half-matched) family donors, often a parent

Sheba’s expertise allows access to the most suitable donor for every child, ensuring that no patient is left without options.

A unique advantage of donor transplantation is the graft-versus-tumor effect, where the new immune system can help recognize and fight any remaining neuroblastoma cells.

Precision Matching and Advanced Technology

Successful transplantation begins with the best possible donor match.

Sheba Medical Center operates an advanced on-site HLA laboratory, performing high-resolution genetic testing to ensure optimal compatibility between donor and child, enhancing safety and treatment effectiveness.
