Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation) for Pediatric Ewing Sarcoma

Sheba Medical Center – Advanced, Personalized Transplant Care for Children

At Sheba Medical Center, we understand how overwhelming it can be for families to face a diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma. This rare and aggressive childhood cancer requires highly specialized care, precision treatment, and a deeply supportive environment for both the child and their family.

For children with high-risk, recurrent, or treatment-resistant Ewing Sarcoma, Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation) may be considered as part of an advanced treatment strategy, offering a powerful approach aimed at improving long-term outcomes.

Our pediatric transplant program combines world-class expertise, innovative therapies, and compassionate, family-centered care at every stage of the journey.

When is a Bone Marrow Transplant Needed?

Bone marrow transplantation is not part of standard treatment for all children with Ewing Sarcoma, but is recommended in specific situations, including:

High-risk disease, particularly with spread beyond the primary tumor
Relapsed Ewing Sarcoma, when the disease returns after initial treatment
Refractory disease, when standard therapies are not sufficient

In these cases, BMT allows the use of high-dose chemotherapy to target cancer cells, followed by the infusion of healthy stem cells to restore the bone marrow and immune system.

Types of Transplant

Autologous Transplant (Child’s Own Cells)

This is the most commonly used transplant approach in Ewing Sarcoma when BMT is indicated.

Stem cells are collected from the child in advance
Intensive therapy is administered to eliminate cancer cells
The child’s own stem cells are reinfused to support recovery

This approach enables the safe delivery of higher-intensity treatment.
