Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation for Pediatric Osteosarcoma
Sheba Medical Center – Advanced, Personalized Care for Children

At Sheba Medical Center, we understand how challenging it can be for families to face a diagnosis of osteosarcoma. As the most common primary bone cancer in children and adolescents, osteosarcoma requires highly specialized treatment and close collaboration between pediatric oncologists, orthopedic surgeons, and transplant specialists.

While many children achieve excellent outcomes with a combination of chemotherapy and surgery, some cases require a more intensive treatment approach. For selected children with advanced, metastatic, or relapsed osteosarcoma, high-dose chemotherapy supported by Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (ASCT) may offer an additional therapeutic option.

At Sheba, we combine world-class expertise, innovative treatment strategies, and compassionate family-centered care to provide every child with the most advanced treatment opportunities available.

When is Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation Considered?

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation is not routinely used for all children with osteosarcoma. However, it may be considered in carefully selected situations, including:

Metastatic osteosarcoma
Relapsed disease
High-risk cases requiring intensified treatment
Children participating in specialized treatment protocols

In these situations, high-dose chemotherapy may be used to target resistant cancer cells. Stem cell transplantation allows doctors to safely administer these intensive treatments while supporting the body's recovery afterward.

How the Treatment Works

Stem Cell Collection

Before treatment begins, healthy blood-forming stem cells are collected from the child's bloodstream and carefully preserved.

High-Dose Chemotherapy

The child receives intensive chemotherapy designed to target remaining osteosarcoma cells throughout the body.

Stem Cell Rescue

After chemotherapy, the child's previously collected stem cells are reinfused to restore bone marrow function and support the recovery of healthy blood cells and the immune system.

This process allows physicians to deliver highly intensive treatment while helping the body recover efficiently.
