Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation)for Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL)
Sheba Medical Center – Advanced, Personalized Transplant Care for Children
At Sheba Medical Center, we understand that a diagnosis of Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) in a child or adolescent is a deeply emotional experience for the entire family.
While many children with Hodgkin Lymphoma respond successfully to standard treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, some cases require more advanced therapy. For children with relapsed, refractory, or high-risk disease, Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (ASCT) is a highly effective and well-established treatment approach that can help achieve long-term remission.
Our pediatric transplant program combines global expertise, advanced medical technology, and compassionate, family-centered care to support children and families throughout every stage of treatment and recovery.
The Role of Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation in Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma
Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation uses the child’s own healthy stem cells to restore bone marrow function after intensive chemotherapy.
This approach plays a central role in treating:
Relapsed Hodgkin Lymphoma
When Hodgkin Lymphoma returns after initial treatment, ASCT may help achieve deeper disease control and improve long-term outcomes.
Refractory Disease
For children whose lymphoma does not respond adequately to standard therapy, high-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell rescue offers a more intensive and effective treatment strategy.
High-Risk Disease
In selected high-risk cases, ASCT may be recommended as consolidation therapy to strengthen treatment response and reduce the risk of recurrence.
How the Treatment Works
Stem Cell Collection
Before high-dose chemotherapy begins, healthy stem cells are collected from the child’s bloodstream and safely preserved.
High-Dose Chemotherapy
Children then receive intensive chemotherapy designed to eliminate remaining lymphoma cells throughout the body.
Stem Cell Rescue
After chemotherapy, the child’s own stem cells are reinfused to restore bone marrow function and support immune system recovery.
This process allows doctors to deliver highly effective treatment while helping the body rebuild healthy blood-forming cells.
Donor Options – Always a Solution Available
Although most children with Hodgkin Lymphoma undergo autologous transplantation using their own stem cells, some complex cases may require an allogeneic (donor) transplant.
If a donor-based approach is needed, Sheba Medical Center provides access to multiple donor options:
Matched family donors, when available
Matched unrelated donors through international registries
Haploidentical (half-matched) family donors
Cord blood transplantation
Using advanced matching technologies and global donor access, our team works to ensure that every child can receive the most suitable transplant option, even when a family match is not available.
