Bone Marrow Transplant for Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma
Sheba Medical Center – Advanced, Personalized Transplant Care for Children
At Sheba Medical Center, we understand that a diagnosis of Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) in a child or adolescent is a deeply emotional experience for the entire family.
While most children with Hodgkin Lymphoma respond well to standard treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, a small number may require more advanced therapy. In these cases, bone marrow transplantation (BMT) may offer a highly effective and potentially curative option.
Our pediatric transplant program combines global expertise, advanced medical technology, and a compassionate, family-centered approach to support children at every stage of their treatment journey.
When is a Bone Marrow Transplant Needed?
In pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma, a bone marrow transplant may be considered when:
The disease returns after initial treatment (relapsed HL)
The lymphoma does not respond adequately to standard therapies (refractory HL)
More intensive treatment is needed to achieve long-term remission
The goal of BMT is to allow the use of very high-dose therapy to eliminate lymphoma cells, followed by the restoration of healthy blood-forming cells, helping the child’s immune system recover and remain strong.
Types of Transplant
At Sheba, treatment is carefully tailored to each child’s condition:
Autologous Transplant (Child’s Own Cells)
This is the most common approach for pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma. The child’s own stem cells are collected, preserved, and reinfused after high-dose chemotherapy to restore bone marrow function.
Allogeneic Transplant (Donor Cells)
Used only in selected high-risk or difficult cases, this approach uses stem cells from a donor to rebuild the immune system. It is reserved for specific situations where additional immune support is needed.
Finding the Right Donor
In most pediatric HL cases requiring transplant, autologous transplantation is used. When a donor transplant is needed, Sheba ensures access to the best possible match:
Matched family donors when available
Matched unrelated donors through international registries
Haploidentical (half-matched) family donors
Cord blood units
Advanced laboratory technology enables precise matching to ensure safety and the best possible outcomes.
Specialized Pediatric Transplant Care
Children undergoing bone marrow transplantation at Sheba are treated in dedicated pediatric transplant units designed specifically for young patients and their families.
Care includes:
Highly protected, child-friendly hospital environments
Advanced infection prevention systems
