Additional information
1. Procedure Description Spinal decompression surgery, often called a laminectomy, is performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. The surgeon removes the "lamina"—the back part of the vertebra that covers your spinal canal—and any bone spurs or thickened ligaments that are narrowing the space and pinching the nerves.
Surgery Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the number of levels involved.
Technique: This is a standard open or minimally invasive decompression focused on anatomical restoration of the spinal canal.
Clinic Highlights: Our surgical team utilizes high-magnification microsurgery and specialized intraoperative nerve monitoring to ensure maximum safety and precision during the decompression. 2. For Who (Patient Suitability)
Target Patients: Individuals experiencing "neurogenic claudication," which includes leg pain, numbness, or weakness that worsens with walking and improves with sitting or leaning forward.
Requirements: A recent MRI of the Lumbar/Cervical spine (within the last 6 months) is mandatory to confirm the degree of stenosis and plan the surgical levels.
Contraindications: Patients with severe systemic infections or those whose symptoms are primarily caused by vascular issues rather than nerve compression.
3. Post-Operation Care & RecommendationsHospital Stay: 1 to 3 nights for monitoring and pain management.
Recovery Timeline: Patients are usually encouraged to walk the day after surgery. Most return to light activities within 4 to 6 weeks.
Travel Readiness: We recommend staying in-country for at least 10–14 days to ensure proper wound healing and to receive a "fit-to-fly" clearance.
Preparation: Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous twisting of the spine for several weeks following the procedure.
Note: The above package includes standard services only and does not cover patients with complications or medical conditions that fall outside the hospital’s specified terms and conditions. Additional charges may apply, and prices are subject to change without prior notice.

FAQ
What are the types of open spinal decompression?
There are several types of operation:
- interlaminar - resection of the arches of two adjacent vertebrae;
- osteoplastic - after resection of the vertebral arch, the doctor closes the hole with a special implant;
- exploratory - a diagnostic operation to assess the condition of the spinal canal.
What are the indications and contraindications for the procedure?
Indications:
- narrowing of the spinal canal;
- hernia of one or more intervertebral discs;
- bone growths (osteophytes) of the spine;
- spinal tumor;
- disorders caused by pinching of the spinal cord (disorders of urination and digestion, loss of sensation and impaired mobility of the limbs).
Main contraindications:
- inflammatory or infectious diseases;
- pregnancy;
- acute or chronic disorders of the heart;
- respiratory failure;
- blood clotting disorders;
- diabetes;
- severe conditions caused by another disease.
What does preparation for surgery include?
Before the operation, the patient must undergo an examination:
- blood test;
- Analysis of urine;
- coagulogram;
- electrocardiogram (ECG);
- checking liver function;
- chest x-ray;
- CT or MRI of the spine
How is the procedure and recovery going?
During the procedure, the patient is under general anesthesia. The neurosurgeon makes a small longitudinal incision (up to 3 cm), removes the vertebral arches and sutures.
In the first days, to reduce pain, the doctor prescribes a course of analgesics to the patient.
Full recovery period takes up to 6 weeks , during which you can not bend over sharply, lift weights and sit for a long time. If the work is associated with intense physical activity, then their maximum limitation is recommended. In this case, the patient must perform a set of therapeutic exercises. In some cases, physiotherapy is prescribed.
What is the cost of a laminectomy?
The following factors influence the price:
- method of carrying out the procedure;
- selected country and clinic;
- non-medical expenses (transfer, translator, meals and accommodation for the accompanying person).
In many clinics, the cost includes anesthesia, the operation itself, hospitalization, medicines and consumables. Check the exact cost for your case with the Bookimed coordinating doctor.
