Radiation therapy for sarcomas at CDD Radioterapia in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, uses methods including IMRT and SBRT. The clinic holds the Dominican Republic’s first ESTRO quality certification for radiotherapy.
Radiation methods and planning
Treatment may use external-beam radiotherapy or stereotactic radiosurgery. Options include IMRT, image-guided radiotherapy, 3D conformal radiotherapy, SBRT, and tomotherapy.
A radiation oncologist selects the method, energy level, and number of sessions based on the individual case. Appointments can be arranged around work, school, or daily commitments.
CDD Radioterapia was the first center in the Dominican Republic to offer SBRT, in 2012. This method delivers targeted radiation in fewer sessions.
Equipment and image checks
The clinic uses a Varian Halcyon linear accelerator, the first installed in Latin America. Its other equipment includes a Varian CLINAC 21 IX with respiratory gating.
Before each session, PortalVision imaging checks the patient’s anatomy in real time. Dynamic collimators shape radiation beams with millimeter accuracy to limit exposure to nearby organs.
Respiratory gating activates the beam during selected parts of the breathing cycle. This can help protect healthy tissue in the chest and abdomen.
The clinic also uses a PET-CT Discovery IQ for staging and treatment planning. It was the first such system installed in the Caribbean.
Clinical oversight and certification
Dr. Victor Moreno, medical director and radiation oncologist, leads the clinic’s international patient care program. The team has training from Yale University and the Madrid Institute of Oncology.
CDD Radioterapia received its ESTRO quality certification in 2018. It also holds IROC certifications from MD Anderson Cancer Center, awarded in 2016 and 2017.
The clinic provides radiotherapy through Clínica Abreu’s radiotherapy and radiosurgery service. It is part of the CDD Global group.
Side effects
Side effects vary by patient and treatment. The clinic reports that many patients have mild symptoms or none, and symptoms usually ease within two to three weeks after treatment ends.
