The Leksell Gamma Knife Icon directs 192 cobalt-60 beams to the target with submillimeter accuracy. Treatment takes 30–120 minutes and is painless and silent. Local anesthetic and a sedative are used to secure the frame or mask. A hospital stay is usually not needed, and patients may return to work and strenuous activity in about two days. The treatment has been reported to prevent further tumor growth in over 90% of cases.
Hypofractionated Gamma Knife radiosurgery: This option is used when a tumor reaches or touches the optic nerve system. The course may span 5–7 days, allowing treatment near the optic structures.
Transsphenoidal surgery: Surgeons remove the tumor through the nose with computer-assisted neuronavigation. It may be considered for growing or space-occupying tumors, especially when vision is impaired. The center has access to neurosurgical beds at Helios Hospital Krefeld.

Yesterday I underwent the treatment. It could have happened much sooner, but since my health insurance company rejected both the initial coverage and my appeal, I had to switch providers. This meant I had to put off my anxiety for a good six months. Now I've discovered that it was completely unfounded. Everything went smoothly. First, the MRI, then the application of the frame, the catheter examination next door at the Helios clinic, and finally the radiation therapy. It was all quick and painless. I am incredibly grateful and happy for the team. My special thanks go to the medical assistant who looked after me and supported me throughout the day. Her empathy, attentiveness, and care are truly exceptional. Unfortunately, I've forgotten her name. My heartfelt thanks also go to Dr. Sonnenschein. This team doesn't just work – it creates a new quality of life. An exceptionally empathetic team, a warm, trusting atmosphere, and doctors of the highest professional caliber. You feel seen, taken seriously, and supported. A year ago, my doctor in Tübingen recommended Gamma Knife treatment in Krefeld for an acoustic neuroma. Since I had no acute symptoms and, as a former competitive athlete, had learned to trust my body, I initially didn't pursue this recommendation and rather pushed it aside. I'm reluctant to relinquish control, as in the past I've been able to naturally restore balance to many things for which interventions were recommended. Over time, I let the information sink in until it finally became clear to me that only two options were viable for me in this case: radiosurgical treatment or surgery. When I emailed the Gamma Knife Center Krefeld three weeks ago, I hadn't expected everything to develop so quickly and smoothly. I received an appointment for the initial consultation very quickly, and just a few days later, I had my next appointment for radiation therapy. This was extremely helpful, as it left me no time for unnecessary, repetitive thoughts. Everything was exceptionally well-organized and characterized by a calm, harmonious atmosphere and an exceptionally courteous, friendly, and relaxed team. This environment provided me with invaluable mental support and gave me the reassurance that I was exactly where I needed to be. Even during my initial consultation with Dr. Nießen, he took ample time, patiently explained everything in patient-friendly language, and answered all my questions thoroughly. Since my radiation therapy appointment was scheduled for very early in the morning, I traveled to Krefeld the day before. I stayed overnight at the wonderful Holiday Inn Express Hotel and the next day was able to take bus 047 directly from the hotel entrance to Gate 3 of the Edelstahlwerk (Stainless Steel Works). From there, I quickly reached Seyffeldstraße via tram 042 towards the city center. During my initial consultation with Dr. Nießen, he took a considerable amount of time, patiently explained everything in patient-friendly language, and answered all my questions in detail. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. van Eck and knew from the very first moment that I was in the best hands. He is extremely motivated, empathetic, and insightful, and he has a knack for defusing even tense moments with subtle, gentle cheerfulness, instilling trust, calm, and confidence in his patients. The treatment steps—the injections and the placement of the crown—were performed calmly, quickly, precisely, and with the utmost professionalism. Thanks to my great confidence in the treatment, I remained calm throughout the entire procedure and was even glad to be taking this important step toward recovery. After the treatment, I did have a headache, but only from the crown placement and not from within my skull, which didn't worry me at all. The relief of having completed the procedure outweighed everything else. I was practically back on my feet immediately and able to go home—a true example of medical excellence. It was a radiosurgical procedure on the head, after which you can simply go home. The next day I was tired, mostly from all the excitement, but otherwise I didn't notice anything. I especially admire the meticulous work that Dr. van Eck performed. I am deeply grateful that it is possible today to perform such a precise radiological procedure. For me, this is a great gift of modern medicine and a great privilege for us in Germany. I will always be sincerely grateful to this doctor and the entire team – as well as to my statutory health insurance company, TK, which made this treatment possible and supported it. I received a very short-notice appointment for the consultation and treatment of my cerebellar metastasis. Even upon entering the center, you feel welcomed by a friendly and warm atmosphere. The staff and doctors are so friendly, empathetic, and well-organized that you immediately feel you are in excellent hands and receiving the best possible care. This continues throughout the consultation and treatment. There was no rush or stress on the day of treatment; the focus was solely on making the experience as comfortable as possible for the patient. And I left the center with this same feeling.
