Spinal cord stimulator (SCS) in Helios Gesundheit
About the clinic
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) at Helios St. Josefshospital Uerdingen in Germany helps patients manage chronic pain through advanced neuromodulation. The procedure involves placing thin electrodes in the epidural space to interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain. This treatment is particularly effective for those who have not found relief through traditional methods.
Advanced Neurostimulation Technology
Prof. Dr. Philipp Slotty leads the neurostimulation program at the clinic. He was among the first surgeons in Europe to implant the newest generation of spinal cord stimulators. These modern devices are 58% smaller than older models, providing better comfort under the skin. The battery is highly efficient and only needs charging about five times per year. Furthermore, these new systems are compatible with whole-body MRI scans, allowing patients to undergo future diagnostic imaging without complications.
The Two-Step Treatment Process
Treatment begins with a trial phase to see how the patient reacts to the stimulation. A thin electrode is inserted behind the spinal cord during a 30 to 60-minute procedure. This happens under local anesthesia, so the patient remains awake. The patient then tests the device for seven days in their daily environment. This trial period allows the patient to decide if the therapy helps before committing to a permanent implant.
Results and Success Rates
If the test phase is successful, a small impulse generator is implanted under the skin of the abdomen. This final surgery also uses local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia. Data shows that about 80% of patients benefit from this therapy. Instead of feeling chronic pain, patients typically experience a gentle tingling sensation. This shift helps many people return to their normal activities with less reliance on medication.

The cardiology department focuses on heart valve conditions and rhythm disorders. Specialists offer long-term EKG monitoring and implant all pacemaker and ICD systems. Chest Pain Units run 24-hour emergency hotlines for coronary artery disease. Echocardiography is the primary tool for assessing aortic valve narrowing.
Orthopedics and Spine Surgery
The Orthopedic-Traumatology Center handles joint replacements and spine therapy. Dr. Thomas Lerner leads the spine surgery team. He offers both conservative and surgical treatments. For complex cases, surgeons use custom-made shoulder implants – over 50 have been placed since 2019.
Arthroscopic services include:
- Rotator cuff refixation and shoulder stabilization
- ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair
- Cartilage cell transplantation for knee injuries
- MPFL-plasty for patellar dislocation
- Ankle joint stabilization surgery
Urology and General Surgery
The urology department treats prostate cancer with the Da Vinci robotic system for radical prostatectomy. This technology allows precise tissue removal while preserving function. The team also handles urinary stones through flexible ureteroscopy and non-invasive shockwave lithotripsy.
General surgery includes certified hernia care. Surgeons treat inguinal, umbilical, and abdominal wall hernias in adults and children. These departments take part in the Herniamed quality assurance study to track outcomes.
Diagnostic and Treatment Technology
The hospitals rely on modern imaging for accurate diagnostics. MRI and CT scanners support internal medicine and oncology planning. I arrived on the ward at 4:00 a.m. during the night and was welcomed there as well, very friendly.
The nursing staff on the private/premium ward was very nice and competent. They responded quickly when I pressed the call button. I never felt like a burden.
Thank you very much for that.

My 16-year-old son and I felt incredibly well cared for both medically and personally throughout the entire time. In particular, the calm, attentive, and caring support in the pediatric intensive care unit gave us a great deal of security in a situation that was very frightening for us. The entire team was dedicated, respectful, and there for us at all times.
We would especially like to highlight Dr. med. Jannika Dodge-Khatami. By looking at the EKG, she immediately recognized what was wrong with my son—an apparently congenital heart defect that only became noticeable now and needs to be treated operatively.
Her professional competence, her quick and confident assessment, and her calm and assured way of acting deeply impressed me as a mother. At the same time, she treated my son with great warmth and appreciation and guided him wonderfully through this difficult situation.
She also supported me in a loving and respectful way. We are especially grateful that she arranged a timely and important surgery date at another clinic.
A big thank-you to the entire team of the children’s hospital, pediatric cardiology, and the pediatric intensive care unit—and from the bottom of our hearts, especially to Dr. Dodge-Khatami.

My husband was admitted to the ENT department with perichondritis (swelling of the ear). The ear was treated quickly and successfully. But what followed is unfortunately no longer a given these days:
Since February, my husband had been suffering from constantly changing, severe symptoms (fever, chills, weight loss, problems involving the lungs, kidneys, prostate and joints) and simply couldn’t get back on his feet. When it was time for discharge, Chief Physician Mr. Stöbe and Mr. Müller listened to me attentively. They took a great deal of time, requested all previous test results, obtained X-ray and CT images, and consulted with colleagues from other specialties.
Thanks to this outstanding commitment, they established contact with the hematologist Dr. Liss. With his experience, the VEXAS syndrome was ultimately diagnosed. After months of uncertainty, exhaustion and worry, that took a ton of weight off our shoulders.
We would like to sincerely thank Chief Physician Mr. Stöbe, Mr. Müller, Dr. Liss and the entire wonderful ENT nursing staff. Here, the profession of a doctor is still carried out with complete dedication, empathy, and genuine passion for the patient. The ENT department has brought the decisive turning point for us—thank you for listening to us and helping us!

We genuinely felt very well cared for. The doctors were incredibly friendly, understanding, and took a lot of time with us. A very special thank-you goes to the nurse Suada — she was so warm, compassionate, and caring, and she really took great care of her.
Especially in a situation where you’re worried and unsure, such a human, loving approach means an incredible amount.
Thank you to the entire team!
