Confraternitaet & Goldenes Kreuz Private Clinic:

Austria, Vienna

Confraternität & Goldenes Kreuz is a private hospital in Vienna formed in 2026 from two long-standing hospitals: the Confraternität, Vienna's oldest private hospital, whose origins go back to 1729, and the Goldenes Kreuz, home to the largest private maternity department in Austria. Both now operate on a single campus close to the Vienna General Hospital, with a shared new building nearby due to open at the end of 2028. The hospital has around 120 beds, cares for roughly 9,000 inpatients a year, and works with a network of about 350 affiliated specialists, many of them university professors. It belongs to the Mavie Med group, part of the UNIQA insurance group.

Cancer Care

The hospital's certified Breast Health Center diagnoses and treats breast cancer to internationally recognised quality standards, supported by breast cancer surgeons and oncologists. Gynaecological cancers, blood disorders, and cancers of the digestive organs, prostate and other sites are also treated, with surgery, medical oncology and haematology working side by side.

Women's Health and Childbirth

The Goldenes Kreuz hosts the largest private maternity department in the country, with around 1,600 births a year. Specialists in obstetrics, anaesthesia and intensive care are on site around the clock, and a paediatrician with neonatology training is on call day and night. A fertility centre, an endometriosis centre and prenatal diagnostics complete the women's health offering, and the hospital works closely with the university women's and children's clinics nearby.

Surgery and Other Specialties

The hospital's doctors cover the following fields:

  • General and abdominal surgery
  • Orthopaedic, sports, joint, foot and spinal surgery
  • Urology and men's health, with a dedicated prostate focus
  • Cardiology, with interventional catheter treatment
  • Gastroenterology, with endoscopy
  • Ophthalmology
  • ENT
  • Reconstructive surgery

Treatment is available on an outpatient, day-clinic or inpatient basis, and each patient is cared for throughout by an attending specialist of their choice.

Diagnostics and Comfort

Radiology, a laboratory, anaesthesia and an intensive care unit are on site, and rooms are single or double, designed for comfort and recovery. A strong emphasis on preventive medicine allows illnesses to be detected early through comprehensive check-up programmes.

International Patients

The hospital has long experience caring for patients from abroad, with an international desk and interpreters for the following languages, among others:

  • English
  • Russian
  • Ukrainian
  • Romanian

Its central location offers excellent transport links.

I was not in the hospital. I asked just a second opinion. I was very disappointed, because I was working a lot to translate all the documentation into English, and finally I was discussing with doctor only 10 minutes, and the level of the discussion was very poor. Practically I did not get anything for 400 EUR.

Reply from Professor Johaness Drach:
Second opinion is given on the basis of a thorough analyses of provided medical reports. The procedure lasts as long until all questions of the patient have been clarified. If necessary specialists of other disciplines are also involved. The patient always receive a written statement.

Doctors were explainning to me in advance what exactly they will do to me.
Post-surgery recommandations were very light if I needed some assistance because of feeling sick.
Bookimed gave me the options to choose the best treatment for my problem.

Everything was fine

Everything was fine. Bookimed was very kind to find me an appointment pretty short notice in Vienna. The surgent was very professional. The only thing I would have preferred was to pay with a credit card. I had to go to an ATM and pay cash.
