About the clinic

Cataract care at Samsung Miracle Eye Clinic (Gangnam) in Seoul, South Korea, includes testing and lens-replacement surgery. Refractometry may cost around $50–$100; phaco surgery is around $400–$3,400 per eye. Premium multifocal or EDOF lenses are around $1,900–$2,600, while toric lenses are around $700–$1,200 per eye.

Medical director Dr. Kim Jinchul developed the patent-pending MIRACLE FORMULA for calculating lens power in Asian cataract patients. It draws on data from 10,000+ eyes. Dr. Kim completed fellowship training at Mayo Clinic and graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine.

The clinic has reached 10,000 PanOptix multifocal cataract surgeries. Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare designated it a Foreign Patient-Friendly Medical Institution in 2018.

Cataract testing with IOLMaster 700 and CIRRUS 6000

A one-to-one pre-operative exam takes about 2–3 hours, and its fee is included in the surgery price.

  • Refractometry: Measures the eye’s refractive error.
  • Optical biometry: IOLMaster 700 measures eye length and corneal curve to help calculate lens power.
  • Corneal imaging: Pentacam tomography and Galilei G4 topography map the cornea.
  • Retinal and nerve testing: CIRRUS 6000 OCT, Optos fundus imaging, and Humphrey HFA II 740 visual field testing are available.

Cataract surgery with phacoemulsification

Ultrasound breaks up the clouded natural lens, which is then replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure can also correct myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.

  • Phacoemulsification with IOL implantation: May cost around $400–$3,400 per eye, depending on the lens. The price includes the pre-operative exam and MIRACLE FORMULA lens-power calculation.
  • Presbyopia-correcting IOL surgery: Multifocal or EDOF lenses may cost around $1,900–$2,600 per eye. Options include PanOptix, Vivity, Synergy, and FineVision; the surgical fee depends on lens type.
  • Toric IOL surgery: Toric lenses may cost around $700–$1,200 per eye. CALLISTO eye navigation helps align the lens with the astigmatism axis.

The surgical team uses a Centurion Gold phaco system with Active Sentry pressure control and a LUMERA 700 microscope. The clinic describes outpatient day surgery, with a next-day review before surgery on the other eye. For international patients, consultation, examination, and surgery can take place on one day. Patients can request a consultation through Bookimed.

Now, my vision is considered perfect by local standards, and I'm feeling better than expected

The coordinator was always in touch and handled all communication with the clinic, so I didn't have to spend my own time or energy organizing anything. It made the whole experience easy, even when I had to reschedule my appointment several times. The clinic itself was extremely professional and modern, with state-of-the-art equipment and specialists who speak English. I had the SMILE procedure on one eye to correct a lifetime of astigmatism and worsening vision. Now, my vision is considered perfect by local standards, and I'm feeling better than expected. The clinic has stayed in touch since the surgery. My advice is simple: just come to the clinic and trust the professionals. You don’t need to prepare anything in advance; just show up.
The coordinator was always in touch and handled all communication with the clinic, so I didn’t have to spend my own time, energy, or effort on organizing anything. It made the whole experience incredibly easy and stress-free. I had to reschedule my appointment several times, and thanks to the coordinator, everything was arranged smoothly each time. The clinic itself exceeded all my expectations. Everything was extremely professional, modern, and aesthetically beautiful. The equipment is state-of-the-art, and the specialists are highly qualified and speak English, which made communication very comfortable. I had lived with astigmatism and worsening vision my entire life, and now, according to Korean standards, my vision is considered perfect. I’m incredibly happy with the result. I’m very grateful for the entire experience and would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone who is planning to improve their vision.
