Rudolfinerhaus: more details about the clinic
Rudolfinerhaus is a private, multi-disciplinary hospital in the elegant 19th district of Vienna, set in a large park at the edge of the Vienna Woods. It was founded in 1882 by Theodor Billroth, the surgeon regarded as the father of modern abdominal surgery, and takes its name from its patron, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary. Since 1912 it has been linked to the Red Cross. Almost completely rebuilt in 2020, the current building has 156 beds, most in private apartments, and digital patient records giving doctors and nurses immediate access to every finding.
Everything Under One Roof
The clinic's guiding idea is that the whole path from first diagnosis to discharge happens on one site, with the same team of doctors, therapists and nurses in constant exchange. This means fewer delays, plannable treatments and a calmer recovery. Outpatient clinics, imaging, angiography, the laboratory, endoscopy and physical rehabilitation are all in the building.
Medical Fields
The main departments are internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, orthopaedics and traumatology, gynaecology and obstetrics, neurology and neurosurgery, urology, oncology, and ENT. Ophthalmology, dermatology and plastic and reconstructive surgery are also offered. Cancer patients are cared for across these fields, from imaging and histology through surgery to follow-up.
Diagnosis and Early Detection
Rudolfinerhaus places strong emphasis on prevention. Its check-up programmes are designed to find health problems early, and can be extended with full-body screening, gastroscopy and colonoscopy. On-site diagnostics include MRI, CT, X-ray, angiography, nuclear medicine, a sleep laboratory, endoscopy, histology and the clinic's own laboratory, so results come quickly.
Surgery and Interventional Radiology
Surgery has been at the heart of Rudolfinerhaus since Billroth's time. The clinic performs general and abdominal surgery, orthopaedic and trauma surgery and other operative procedures, supported by modern operating theatres and a recovery unit. Its interventional radiology service uses image-guided, minimally invasive techniques that can replace open or keyhole surgery for certain conditions.
Care and Comfort
Personal nursing is central to Rudolfinerhaus, which grew out of Austria's first professional nursing school and continues today as an academic campus. Many senior physicians hold professorships or associate professorships at the Medical University of Vienna. Patients have a free choice of doctor, and general practitioners, anaesthetists and intensive care specialists are on site around the clock, with obstetricians and imaging specialists on call. Rooms are furnished to a five-star hotel standard.
Quality and International Patients
Rudolfinerhaus is the only private hospital in Austria to hold comprehensive ISO 9001 certification covering all its services and specialties. A dedicated international department with translators helps patients from abroad, who come mainly from Central and Eastern Europe, arrange their appointments and stay.
