University of Heidelberg was founded by Rupert I, Elector Palatine in the 14th century under the auspices of the Pope. Interesting facts:

  • Max Wilms (1867 – 1918), an early twentieth-century Chair, was the first to describe nephroblastoma in children. This disease is named after Dr Max Wilms (Wilms’ tumor);
  • Endoscopy department became the model of future at  the International Bronchoscopy Congress in 2000;
  • In the Department of Urology the first kidney transplantation in Germany was carried out by Lars Roehlin 1967, and in 1991 Staehler and Beer performed the first laparoscopic lymphadenectomy for prostate cancer in Europe. Equipment of the Department of Urology is regularly upgraded which helps to optimally diagnose and treat urogenital disorders;
  • In Thoraxklinik-Heidelberg more than 5 000 examinations are carried out and more than two thousand surgeries on lungs and adjacent organs are performed;

Hematology, Oncology and Rheumatology Clinic is famous for its research. A special state oncological center with the biggest stem cell bank in the country was created here.
Another center which deals with sleep disorders works here in the hospital. Specialists of this center observe patient’s sleep at every stage and analyze the problem and its connection to other disorders.
Palliative care is also of high quality. Specialists take care after terminally ill patients in order to make the stay at the hospital as comfortable as possible.
