How Much Does Ovarian cancer surgery Cost in Germany?

Ovarian cancer surgery in Germany typically costs from $30,000 to $50,000. The final price depends on the cancer stage, surgical complexity, and the clinic's location. In the US, similar procedures cost around $85,000 on average. Patients save around 53% compared to US prices. These estimates generally include preoperative diagnostics, anesthesia, surgical materials, and hospital stay.

  • Ovarian cyst removal: $4,500 to $8,000 for less complex cases.
  • Оophorectomy: $10,000 to $20,000 for the removal of ovaries.
  • Advanced cytoreductive surgery: Typically adds significant costs when combined with HIPEC or organ resection.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery: Precision techniques using Da Vinci systems often carry a 20-30% premium.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Planning surgery in Germany offers access to highly specialized, multidisciplinary cancer centers. Medical Center in Solingen and Nordrhein-Westfalen Clinic are certified by the German Cancer Society. These certifications ensure patients receive standardized, high-quality oncology care. The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment
With the organization of medical services, everything went clearly according to the previous plan. Tatyana, the representative of the company, is very communicative, explains everything, no complaints, even came at 7.30 for the procedure, although there was no translation. I made a slight remark, the price for some services was not announced to me , but in fact it was added... These side effects must also be voiced before the trip...... The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment.....

I am writing a review for those people who are in the same difficult situation as our family. Just want to warn, think before you go here. They did not help us ... Moreover, now we understand that they simply did not tell us the truth, promised treatment that everything would be fine and we believed in it, sincerely! They didn’t save on treatment, did everything they recommended, but they just cheerlessly pumped chemistry and prescribed unnecessary consultations like a physiotherapist with charging a hopelessly sick person !!! The company "phoenix" is a soulless creature with the function of receiving money, I don’t even know how to call them anymore ... Doctor Professor Eger also smiled on detours and said that everything would be fine and didn’t even tell the family that the situation was getting worse, she appointed procedures ... As we now understand, everything was clear for a long time, we just wanted to be "treated" because we paid. They tortured our daddy heartlessly and cynically for money !!! Curator Stoyanova stopped responding to letters and the phone immediately, as soon as they informed her that the patient no longer exists. NO ONE! neither she, nor "phoenix", nor the clinic, they even expressed condolences ... It hurts to realize that nothing human is left in people ... We scolded our Russian doctors, and they just told us the truth right away

Not good. The people that I had appointments with did not show up. I met with others who seemed to doubt my records and then claimed that my medical imaging showed no problems whatsoever. I returned home and now seem to have pneumonia in the top of my lungs around the vertebra that are known to have lesions (T1,T2,T3). I consider your service to be a fraud.

My husband and I are very pleased that we made an appointment with Professor Elka Yeager. The examination was carried out on all areas of the body that interest us, and a chemotherapy course was prescribed based on the results of the examination. The first session was held in a hospital clinic. The host company worked very professionally, with great attention to patients. Many thanks to all and best wishes from us!

"I'm very pleased with the treatment
My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense.

I requested a second opinion for the treatment of prostate cancer for my dad. The cosultation was provided in written by Prof. Dr. med. Sebastian Melchior. He answered all my initial questions and the ones I've sent after his initial answers in meter of few days. This helped us in understanding better the situation and possible options. However due to the fact that most of the answers were of general rather specific nature, in the end we are still not sure what is the better treatment in our case.

"The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person!" Return: About the Doctor: "We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr
My mother was diagnosed in Russia with a terrible diagnosis - breast cancer stage 4. The doctors' actions were not credible, so we turned to Bookimed for the selection of a clinic and a doctor. We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr. Ursula Makowiec. Mom passed a 3-day examination in the hospital, in a separate ward. Friendly atmosphere, professionalism, respect for the elderly patient - all this allowed us to relax, not to try to control every step of the medical staff, to read the articles on the Internet. I was sure that we made the right choice. And most importantly - the diagnosis was not confirmed! My mother was not breast cancer with metastases, but a sweat cancer in the armpit without any signs of metastases, the prognosis is much more favorable. The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person! We plan to be observed further in this clinic with this doctor. I would also like to thank the translator Marina Wernke. She was not only an excellent professional, but also a very pleasant conversationalist, we were very comfortable with her. I also want to thank the curators who helped a lot all the time while mom was in the clinic.

Everything is clear and reasonable
Immediately I will note not the intrusive and at the same time "essentially" made by Alena presentation of the clinic. And really everything turned out to be as they described to me: the doctor explained how he sees my situation, what kind of opinion of Moscow doctors he agrees with, and what does not and what he proposes to do. Everything is clear and reasonable.

"I advise everyone here to contact!"
Hello! My dad was diagnosed with a diagnosis in the clinic: adenomatic stomach carcinoma of the 3rd stage. Doctors, nurses and accompanying personnel are qualified professionals, very attentive! All procedures are made as necessary, and not for profit. The only thing that is embarrassing is the menu for people without a stomach. (They gave it hot and fried) Accompanying company takes you from the airport on the day of arrival to the airport on the day of departure. In general, from the time of the first call to today, everyone is happy! I advise everyone here to contact!

FAQ about Ovarian cancer surgery in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which German cities are the principal hubs for gynecological oncology?

Berlin, Munich, and Heidelberg are Germany's primary hubs for gynecological oncology, housing specialized university centers and researchers. Berlin hosts the European Competence Center for Ovarian Cancer at Charite, while Munich and Heidelberg lead in robotic surgery and genetic counseling for hereditary malignancies within academic networks.

  • Berlin specialized care: Charite Universitätsmedizin manages complex cases using molecular profiling and advanced laser procedures.
  • Munich infrastructure: LMU Klinikum and Rechts der Isar offer Da Vinci robotic systems and immunotherapy.
  • Heidelberg scientific hub: National Center for Tumor Diseases coordinates interdisciplinary boards and familial cancer risk testing.
  • Regional center expertise: Cities like Solingen and Frankfurt feature DKG-certified centers with high-volume surgical departments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While major cities attract attention, mid-sized German cities like Solingen or Wuppertal often host university-affiliated clinics with massive patient volumes. For example, Helios University Hospital Wuppertal serves 150,000 patients annually, offering international patients lower wait times for the same rigorous German Cancer Society standards found in Berlin.

Patient Consensus: Focus on finding specialized units rather than just a city. Patients emphasize verifying a surgeon's specific experience with complex debulking surgery and active participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards.

Why do international patients choose Germany for ovarian cancer surgery?

International patients choose Germany for ovarian cancer surgery due to specialized German Cancer Society (DKG) certified centers and exceptional surgical expertise. German specialists prioritize complete cytoreductive surgery for maximum tumor removal and offer advanced therapies like HIPEC and Da Vinci robotic-assisted systems to improve survival outcomes.

  • Specialized certifications: Centers certified by DKG or ESGO provide significantly higher survival rates.
  • Advanced debulking: Surgeons perform complex cytoreduction involving the bowel, diaphragm, and lymph nodes.
  • Minimally invasive options: Facilities utilize Da Vinci robotic systems to reduce recovery time and pain.
  • Integrated treatments: Clinics combine radical surgery with innovative therapies like immunotherapy and PIPAC.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows German clinics like the Medical Center in Solingen and Nordrhein-Westfalen Clinic Complex handle massive patient volumes, often exceeding 60,000 annually. This high frequency directly correlates with surgical proficiency in rare gynecological oncology cases. Patients often choose these high-volume centers for second opinions on surgery feasibility when local options are limited.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the speed of the German system, noting faster access to pathology and imaging than in their home countries. Many feel more confident in the aggressive surgical approach taken by specialist centers to ensure complete tumor removal.

What is the typical hospital stay after major ovarian-cancer surgery in Germany?

Major ovarian cancer surgery in Germany typically requires a hospital stay of 5 to 10 days for open abdominal procedures. For complex debulking cases involving bowel resection or extensive staging, the stay may extend to 14 days to ensure patient stabilization and pain management.

  • Minimal stay: Laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgeries typically allow for discharge after 4 days.
  • Recovery milestones: Discharge requires independent walking, eating, passing gas, and managing pain with tablets.
  • Surgical approach: Open abdominal surgery remains standard for 85% of complex debulking cases.
  • Extended care: German protocols often include a 3-week specialized inpatient rehabilitation program after hospitalization.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordwest Clinic prioritize high-volume oncology centers to ensure surgical safety. While centers with 60,000+ annual patients show excellent efficiency, stay length depends strictly on bowel function recovery. Patients undergoing robotic surgery at Nordrhein-Westfalen Clinic Complex should still expect at least 3 to 5 days of inpatient monitoring.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find they need substantial home support for several weeks after the 10-day hospital stay. Recovery milestones like independent self-care are strictly monitored before German doctors will authorize discharge.

What does standard ovarian cancer surgery involve in German certified centers?

Standard ovarian cancer surgery in German certified centers prioritizes complete macroscopic tumor cytoreduction. Specialized gynecologic oncologists perform these operations following strict national S3-Guidelines from the German Society for Gynaecology and Obstetrics. The primary goal remains removing all visible tumor tissue to improve patient survival.

  • Core procedure: Includes total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and total omentectomy to remove visible disease.
  • Staging laparotomy: Involves systemic pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy and multiple peritoneal biopsies.
  • Multivisceral resection: Surgeons remove affected sections of bowel, diaphragm, or spleen in advanced cases.
  • Technological access: Centers utilize robotic-assisted Da Vinci systems or hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for precision.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordwest Clinic often maintain higher success rates by centralizing care in interdisciplinary cancer centers. These facilities integrate molecular diagnostics and tumor boards into the surgical plan. This high-volume specialization ensures surgeons maintain technical proficiency for complex resections involving multiple organs.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that recovery typically lasts longer than anticipated due to the procedure's major abdominal nature. Most value the extensive pre-operative counseling regarding potential additional organ resections discussed during surgical planning.

How do international patients arrange travel and admission?

International patients coordinate surgery in Germany by sending medical records for clinical review and securing a cost estimate before travel. Specialized international departments at top facilities like Nordwest Clinic or Medical Center in Solingen manage appointment scheduling, invitation letters for medical visas, and coordination of local logistics.

  • Record submission: Provide translated pathology reports and imaging for surgeon review before travel.
  • Financial clearance: Self-pay patients must wire a deposit based on the hospital's estimate.
  • Visa support: Clinics issue official appointment letters once they confirm treatment and financial clearance.
  • Arrival timing: Arrive 1–2 days early for pre-operative testing and surgical consent meetings.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Germany ranks high for oncology volume, with Helios University Hospital Wuppertal alone serving 150,000 patients annually. While many patients focus on the surgery date, the most successful outcomes depend on choosing a facility certified by the German Cancer Society, as these centers meet rigid standards for multidisciplinary care and case volume.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize waiting for final surgeon confirmation before booking flights to ensure the case is operable. They often recommend bringing a companion to assist with translation and discharge instructions during the stressful recovery period.

What are Certified Gynecologic Oncology Centers in Germany?

Certified Gynecologic Oncology Centers in Germany are specialized medical networks accredited by the German Cancer Society. These centers integrate interdisciplinary tumor boards and high-volume surgical expertise to treat ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancers. Facilities like Medical Center in Solingen maintain specific certifications ensuring standardized, evidence-based oncological care.

  • Certification body: The German Cancer Society (DKG) evaluates centers on patient volume and success.
  • Specialized expertise: Surgery is performed by dedicated gynecologic oncologists rather than general gynecologists.
  • Treatment approach: Every case undergoes review by interdisciplinary tumor boards for customized planning.
  • Technology access: Centers often utilize advanced tools like robotic surgery and 3D ultrasound.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German certification isn't just a label; it requires meeting strict surgical minimums. For instance, Medical Center in Solingen and Nordwest Clinic serve over 60,000 patients annually because high volume correlates with better outcomes. Choosing a DKG-certified center ensures your surgical team specializes specifically in complex debulking and cytoreductive procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize verifying that a gynecologic oncologist, not a generalist, leads the surgery. Success often depends on the center's ability to perform extensive upper-abdominal procedures in-house.

What advanced intraoperative treatments are used for late-stage ovarian cancer in Germany?

Advanced intraoperative treatments for late-stage ovarian cancer in Germany center on aggressive cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to achieve complete tumor clearance. Certified gynecological oncology centers utilize multivisceral resections, including bowel and diaphragm stripping, to eliminate all visible microscopic disease within the abdominal cavity.

  • Cytoreductive surgery: Surgeons perform extensive debulking to remove all visible tumor mass from abdominal organs.
  • HIPEC therapy: Heated chemotherapy solutions are circulated intraoperatively to kill remaining microscopic cancer cells.
  • Multivisceral resection: Surgeons routinely resect parts of the bowel, spleen, or liver if cancer spreads.
  • Diagnostic laparoscopy: Doctors use minimally invasive cameras first to confirm if complete resection is feasible.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many countries offer cytoreduction, German university hospitals like Solingen or Nordwest often integrate molecular diagnostics directly into the surgical planning phases. This data-driven approach allows surgeons to choose specific intraoperative techniques based on the tumor's genetic profile. Clinics in high-volume regions like North Rhine-Westphalia show a pattern of specializing in these complex, multi-hour procedures that general hospitals may not support.

Patient Consensus: Patients often emphasize that these surgeries are much more invasive than standard procedures and require specialized oncology centers. Experience confirms that complete tumor removal is the primary goal, even if it requires substantial recovery time afterward.

What are the overall survival rates for ovarian cancer in Germany, and how do they vary by stage?

The overall 5-year relative survival rate for ovarian cancer in Germany is approximately 44%. Outcomes vary significantly by stage, with localized Stage I cases reaching 88% to 90% survival. Conversely, advanced Stage IV diagnoses show survival rates between 15% and 41%.

  • Stage I survival: Localized cancer limited to ovaries has 88% to 90% 5-year survival rates.
  • Stage II survival: Regional spread within pelvic organs drops survival to approximately 79%.
  • Stage III survival: Advanced cases range from 18% to 55% depending on tumor histotype.
  • Stage IV survival: Distant metastasis survival ranges between 15% and 41% after 5 years.
  • Specialized care: DKG-certified centers show significantly higher survival rates than non-certified facilities.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While 72% of German cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, facility volume impacts outcomes. Clinics like Helios University Hospital Wuppertal treat 150,000 patients annually. High-volume centers often achieve better debulking results, which is the primary survival predictor.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that early detection is vital for prognosis. Many advise seeking a second opinion from a gynecologic oncologist at a certified high-volume center before starting treatment.

Are minimally invasive or robotic surgeries available for ovarian cancer in Germany, and in which cases?

Germany offers minimally invasive and robotic surgeries for ovarian cancer in specific cases, primarily for early-stage staging and borderline tumors. German Cancer Society certified centers use Da Vinci robotic systems when the tumor is small and confined to the ovaries to prevent fluid spillage.

  • Early-stage staging: Experts use laparoscopy for Stage 1 cases without visible abdominal spread.
  • Borderline tumors: Robotic precision allows for fertility-sparing surgery in younger patients with non-malignant cells.
  • Diagnostic assessment: Surgeons perform quick laparoscopic mapping to determine if complete tumor removal is possible.
  • Interval debulking: Specialized centers consider robotic approaches after chemotherapy if the tumor burden reduces significantly.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many search for robotic options, German surgical priority remains complete cytoreduction. Data from centers like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordrhein-Westfalen Clinic Complex show that robotic systems are best utilized for diagnostic mapping or very early staging. Patients should prioritize surgeons like Dr. Séverine Iborra, who holds certifications in both oncological therapy and robotic surgery, to ensure the technology is matched by high-volume clinical expertise.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while smaller incisions are appealing, complete tumor removal and accurate staging must take priority. Experience suggests that a planned robotic procedure may convert to open surgery if the surgeon finds more extensive disease during the operation.

What is the typical hospital stay and overall recovery timeline after ovarian cancer surgery in Germany?

Patients undergoing ovarian cancer surgery in Germany typically remain in the hospital for 7 days, though stays vary from 5 to 10 days. Initial recovery for basic daily functions takes 2 to 6 weeks, while complete physical healing generally requires 8 to 12 weeks depending on the surgical technique.

  • Surgical approach: Laparoscopic or robotic stays last 1–4 days versus longer for open debulking.
  • Hospital focus: Monitoring focuses on wound healing, bowel function, and early pain management protocols.
  • Early recovery: Help with driving, lifting, and household chores is necessary for 6 weeks.
  • Advanced healing: Most patients return to light exercise and professional activities after 12 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German oncology centers, such as Medical Center in Solingen, utilize interdisciplinary teams to shorten stays. While standard recovery is 7 days, specialized debulking often involves bowel surgeons. Clinics with German Cancer Society certification frequently manage complex cases without extending hospitalization beyond 10 days.

Patient Consensus: Travelers note that internal healing takes much longer than the external incision appearance suggests. Many suggest planning for a non-linear recovery, especially if chemotherapy starts within 4 weeks of discharge.
