Thank you very much for providing me with all the necessary assistance and support at every stage: choosing a clinic and doctor, accompanying me upon arrival at the clinic and introducing me to Professor Korillos, providing the necessary translations and detailed explanations of all stages of treatment, and answering all my questions both inside and outside the clinic. The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment
With the organization of medical services, everything went clearly according to the previous plan. Tatyana, the representative of the company, is very communicative, explains everything, no complaints, even came at 7.30 for the procedure, although there was no translation. I made a slight remark, the price for some services was not announced to me , but in fact it was added... These side effects must also be voiced before the trip...... The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment.....

I am writing a review for those people who are in the same difficult situation as our family. Just want to warn, think before you go here. They did not help us ... Moreover, now we understand that they simply did not tell us the truth, promised treatment that everything would be fine and we believed in it, sincerely! They didn’t save on treatment, did everything they recommended, but they just cheerlessly pumped chemistry and prescribed unnecessary consultations like a physiotherapist with charging a hopelessly sick person !!! The company "phoenix" is a soulless creature with the function of receiving money, I don’t even know how to call them anymore ... Doctor Professor Eger also smiled on detours and said that everything would be fine and didn’t even tell the family that the situation was getting worse, she appointed procedures ... As we now understand, everything was clear for a long time, we just wanted to be "treated" because we paid. They tortured our daddy heartlessly and cynically for money !!! Curator Stoyanova stopped responding to letters and the phone immediately, as soon as they informed her that the patient no longer exists. NO ONE! neither she, nor "phoenix", nor the clinic, they even expressed condolences ... It hurts to realize that nothing human is left in people ... We scolded our Russian doctors, and they just told us the truth right away

Not good. The people that I had appointments with did not show up. I met with others who seemed to doubt my records and then claimed that my medical imaging showed no problems whatsoever. I returned home and now seem to have pneumonia in the top of my lungs around the vertebra that are known to have lesions (T1,T2,T3). I consider your service to be a fraud.

My husband and I are very pleased that we made an appointment with Professor Elka Yeager. The examination was carried out on all areas of the body that interest us, and a chemotherapy course was prescribed based on the results of the examination. The first session was held in a hospital clinic. The host company worked very professionally, with great attention to patients. Many thanks to all and best wishes from us!

"I'm very pleased with the treatment
My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense.

I requested a second opinion for the treatment of prostate cancer for my dad. The cosultation was provided in written by Prof. Dr. med. Sebastian Melchior. He answered all my initial questions and the ones I've sent after his initial answers in meter of few days. This helped us in understanding better the situation and possible options. However due to the fact that most of the answers were of general rather specific nature, in the end we are still not sure what is the better treatment in our case.

"The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person!" Return: About the Doctor: "We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr
My mother was diagnosed in Russia with a terrible diagnosis - breast cancer stage 4. The doctors' actions were not credible, so we turned to Bookimed for the selection of a clinic and a doctor. We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr. Ursula Makowiec. Mom passed a 3-day examination in the hospital, in a separate ward. Friendly atmosphere, professionalism, respect for the elderly patient - all this allowed us to relax, not to try to control every step of the medical staff, to read the articles on the Internet. I was sure that we made the right choice. And most importantly - the diagnosis was not confirmed! My mother was not breast cancer with metastases, but a sweat cancer in the armpit without any signs of metastases, the prognosis is much more favorable. The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person! We plan to be observed further in this clinic with this doctor. I would also like to thank the translator Marina Wernke. She was not only an excellent professional, but also a very pleasant conversationalist, we were very comfortable with her. I also want to thank the curators who helped a lot all the time while mom was in the clinic.

Everything is clear and reasonable
Immediately I will note not the intrusive and at the same time "essentially" made by Alena presentation of the clinic. And really everything turned out to be as they described to me: the doctor explained how he sees my situation, what kind of opinion of Moscow doctors he agrees with, and what does not and what he proposes to do. Everything is clear and reasonable.

Hello! My dad was diagnosed with a diagnosis in the clinic: adenomatic stomach carcinoma of the 3rd stage. Doctors, nurses and accompanying personnel are qualified professionals, very attentive! All procedures are made as necessary, and not for profit. The only thing that is embarrassing is the menu for people without a stomach. (They gave it hot and fried) Accompanying company takes you from the airport on the day of arrival to the airport on the day of departure. In general, from the time of the first call to today, everyone is happy! I advise everyone here to contact!

FAQ about Esophagectomy in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the success and survival rates for esophagectomies in Germany?

Germany maintains high-authority survival rates for esophagectomies, with 5-year survival ranging from 40% to 61% following modern multimodal treatments. Specialized cancer centers achieve an R0 resection success rate of 97%, while in-hospital mortality remains low at 6.3% to 7.1% nationwide.

  • Success rate: Surgeons achieve 97% complete tumor removal within dedicated thoracic oncology programs.
  • Survival benchmarks: Long-term 5-year survival reaches 72.9% for early-stage adenocarcinomas without lymph involvement.
  • Hospital volume: High-volume centers performing 62+ annual surgeries reduce mortality rates by 50%.
  • 90-day mortality: Specialized facilities report a 90-day mortality rate between 6.8% and 6.9%.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from leading German clinics like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordwest Clinic shows a clear transition toward robotic-assisted systems. Surgeons like Professor Peter Schenker are increasingly using these methods to lower respiratory complication rates, which currently affect 15% of patients nationwide. Selecting a German Cancer Society (DKG) certified center is essential, as these institutions must undergo periodic audits to prove their outcomes meet national safety standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that recovery involves permanent lifestyle changes, such as smaller meal portions. Success is often defined by a multidisciplinary team's ability to prevent early post-operative pneumonia and leaks.

Which are the top accredited hospitals for an esophagectomy in Germany?

Top accredited hospitals for an esophagectomy in Germany include the German Cancer Society certified centers like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordwest Clinic. These facilities prioritize multidisciplinary care, utilizing robotic-assisted technology and specialized visceral surgery departments to ensure high surgical precision and patient safety.

  • German Cancer Society: Certification ensures strict adherence to surgical volume and safety metrics.
  • Medical Center Solingen: Academic hospital of University of Cologne utilizing 3D ultrasound and robotics.
  • Nordwest Clinic: Recognized by Newsweek and Focus magazine for oncology and surgical innovation.
  • University Hospital Dusseldorf: High-volume medical research center performing advanced robotic-assisted esophageal resections.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While university centers like Essen or Dusseldorf handle the highest patient volumes, smaller certified academic hospitals like Medical Center Solingen offer specialized expertise. Professor Peter Schenker at Solingen specifically modernized his department with advanced robotics, potentially offering a more personalized surgical approach than larger, high-traffic institutions.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing high-volume centers with multidisciplinary tumor boards to ensure specialized ICU backup. Success often depends on post-operative logistics, specifically feeding support and early mobility rehabilitation services provided on-site.

What surgical techniques do German surgeons use for esophagectomy?

German surgeons prioritize the Ivor Lewis procedure using Robotic-Assisted Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy (RAMIE) as the benchmark for esophageal cancer care. This approach utilizes multi-arm platforms like the Da Vinci system to perform precise dissections and intrathoracic gastric pull-up reconstructions while reducing complications.

  • Robotic-assisted surgery: Surgeons utilize multi-arm platforms for high anatomical precision and superior lymph node harvest.
  • Minimally invasive approach: Conventional thoracoscopic and laparoscopic phases minimize trauma compared to traditional open chest surgery.
  • Hybrid techniques: Combines laparoscopic abdominal mobilization with limited open thoracotomy for complex or transitional cases.
  • Ivor Lewis standard: Preferred for lower esophageal tumors, involving two-stage abdominal and thoracic surgical phases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university centers like Medical Center in Solingen emphasize certified cancer center status, which requires high annual volumes. Data shows surgeons like Peter Schenker often use robotic systems to create intrathoracic connections, which may lower the risk of respiratory issues compared to neck-level reconstructions.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize discussing conversion plans, as surgeons may switch from minimally invasive to open surgery during the procedure. Shared experiences highlight that focusing on a center’s annual case volume is more critical than the specific technology used.

Will I need a feeding tube after an esophagectomy?

Patients almost always require a temporary jejunostomy feeding tube after an esophagectomy to ensure proper nutrition while the new digestive connection heals. This tube supports calorie intake during the first 1 to 2 months and prevents pressure on the surgical sites during recovery.

  • Healing protection: Prevents digestive stress on the new connection between the stomach and remaining esophagus.
  • Nutritional support: Delivers high-calorie liquid nutrients directly to the small intestine to prevent weight loss.
  • Typical duration: Most patients keep the tube for 4 to 8 weeks after hospital discharge.
  • Transition process: Oral intake starts with liquids and progresses to 5–7 small daily meals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While tube feeding is standard, German centers like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordwest Clinic prioritize robotic-assisted techniques. These minimally invasive approaches often lead to faster internal healing. This may allow patients to transition to oral soft foods more quickly than traditional open surgery patients.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find night cycling the feeding pump most effective. This setup allows for daytime mobility and helps regain a normal appetite for small snacks as healing progresses.

How long is the hospital stay and immediate recovery timeline?

Hospital stays for an esophagectomy in Germany typically range from 10 to 21 days for uncomplicated cases. Patients spend the first days in intensive care for monitoring while managing pain, drains, and breathing exercises. Discharge occurs once stable, though transition to a normal diet takes several weeks.

  • Early mobilization: Walking is encouraged by day 1 to prevent complications like pneumonia and DVT.
  • Drain management: Doctors monitor tubes and surgical drains for approximately 3 to 7 days post-surgery.
  • Dietary progression: Patients start on liquid or soft foods before moving to small, frequent oral meals.
  • Home reconditioning: Fatigue and weight loss often persist for several months after leaving the hospital.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals like Dusseldorf or Essen often use robotic-assisted techniques for this procedure. These minimally invasive approaches, though technically demanding, frequently allow for earlier mobilization compared to open surgery. Choosing a clinic certified by the German Cancer Society ensures specialized nursing staff are available for complex tube and drain management.

Patient Consensus: The first week is often described as the most challenging due to intense breathing exercises and managing reflux. Many patients suggest preparing for a long, phased recovery that prioritizes very small, frequent meals once oral intake begins.

How is the esophagus reconstructed after removal?

Esophageal reconstruction involves creating a new digestive pathway using the stomach, colon, or small intestine. Surgeons typically reshape the stomach into a tube (gastric pull-up) and move it into the chest or neck. This restores the ability to swallow and digest food after an esophagectomy.

  • Gastric pull-up: The stomach is reshaped into a narrow tube and moved into the chest.
  • Colon interposition: A segment of the large intestine replaces the esophagus if the stomach is unavailable.
  • Jejunal transfer: Small intestine segments are used as grafts, often requiring microsurgery for blood supply.
  • Anastomosis locations: Surgeons connect the new conduit to the remaining esophagus in the neck or chest.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals, such as Dusseldorf or Essen, frequently utilize robotic-assisted systems for these reconstructions. Data shows that clinics like Solingen, performing over 9,000 surgeries, prioritize intrathoracic anastomosis for lower tumors to reduce neck scarring. These specialized centers often combine reconstruction with advanced molecular diagnostics to tailor the post-surgical recovery plan.

Patient Consensus: Patients are often surprised to learn their stomach is relocated to their chest or neck area. While surgery is successful, most emphasize that recovery requires patience when relearning how to eat smaller, slower meals.

How does life and eating change permanently after the procedure?

Life after an esophagectomy requires permanent dietary modifications centered on small, frequent meals and upright posture. Patients transition to eating 6 to 8 mini-meals daily while strictly separating solids from liquids. Essential adjustments include lifelong reflux management and meticulous nutritional monitoring to maintain weight and prevent deficiencies.

  • Meal frequency: Patients must eat 6 to 8 small nutritional portions instead of standard large meals.
  • Post-meal posture: Avoid lying flat after eating to prevent regurgitation or severe acid reflux.
  • Hydration timing: Separate liquids from solids to avoid premature fullness or dumping syndrome symptoms.
  • Satiety awareness: Stop eating at the first sign of fullness as the connection cannot stretch.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German oncology centers like the Medical Center in Solingen emphasize specialized therapeutic diet development. Professor Boris Pfaffenbach, with 34 years of experience, integrates nutrition directly into surgical recovery. This clinical focus is vital because food tolerance is highly individual. Some patients may eventually return to nearly normal diets, while others require permanent calorie-dense supplements.

Patient Consensus: Survivors report that while life remains fulfilling, success depends on listening to the body’s new limits. Many find sleeping at an incline essential to manage permanent reflux and avoid sudden fatigue after heavy meals.
