I am 3 months post op and I have zero regrets
The experience I had with Dr Marroquin far exceed my expectations. I am an American living in Miami, FL. I inquired with surgeons locally before deciding to travel abroad for my deep plane face and neck lift with blepharoplasty. After extensive research I found Dr Marroquin, I read through all the patient testimonials I could find and looked at all his before and after photos. I reached out to him via Bookimed. At first I thought I was being scammed, the people at Bookimed did not speak very good english, I could tell I was communicating with a non native english or spanish speaker. The communications came in at weird hours of the day. After a few back and forth, I said I would not proceed any further without speaking with someone from Dr Marroquins office. That same day someone claiming to be Dr Marroquin contacted me on Whatsapp. I thought for sure it was a scam, so at first I ignored him. In Miami you would have to be dying in order for the surgeon to speak with you directly. I told him I was feeling uneasy and he suggested we set up a video call for later that day, I thought there is no way its going to be him on the phone, and sure enough it was him! He took his personal time on a Sunday to call me. We spoke for almost an hour, and at the end of that call I was 100% sure this was my doctor. He is so down to earth and approachable, he made me feel so at ease. I let him know the next day I wanted to proceed with the surgery, from that point on I only communicated with him. He helped me to schedule the surgery, my preop appointments and made recommendations for recovery houses. In less than a month I arrived in Guadalajara, he met with me the next day and we discussed the surgery in length. At that point I decided to add a lip lift to the procedure. I passed all my preop and had my surgery on August 26th. Dr Marroquin was amazing the day of surgery, he spoke to me in english (which he speaks very well), he made sure I understood every step of the process. Everything went very well, I spent the next 10 days in Mexico recovering at a recovery house. I spoke with Dr Marroquin every day while I was there. I had zero complications and flew home after 10 days to continue my recovery at home. I am 3 months post op and I have zero regrets. I speak with Dr Marroquin every few weeks and keep him updated on my progress with photos. If you are considering this surgery, I 100% recommend having a consultation with Dr Marroquin, he is an amazing doctor and human being.
I liked how personal the service was, I really got to know my doctor and felt 100% at ease with him.
I wish I would have waited for the recovery house I wanted to use to have availability. They were booked up so I decided to use another one that was not as highly rated. It was not a bad experience, but it could have been better.

The surgeon was good but the coordinator Carlo made too many mistakes. 1. Didn’t book continuous days at hotel. 2. As a result, I was kicked out of room the day I was in surgery. . 2. Need more after care days to remove drainage. I was abruptly kicked out of TJ while I was still feeling weak. Needed more days in Tijuana. At least 2 more. Return to America and no one wanted to remove drainage tubes. 3. The day nurse talked bad about me to everyone. The night nurse , Paulina was perfect. I would never recommend surgery in Mexico. No need to go viral with this because all of USA know this. Mexican are much better at picking fruits!

Dr
Dr. Marraquin was amazing. He spent over an hour with me on my consultation before my surgery. Let me know absolutely everything that was going to happen. His years of training is quite obvious to anybody who is requesting his services. He answered every question I could possibly think of. Additionally, he was available through text messaging 24 hours a day. He’s response time was impressive. I was very pleased with the outcome of my facelift. I would refer him to any buddy I know.

it safe to get buccal fat extraction in Mexico?

Buccal fat extraction in Mexico can be safe when performed by CMCPER-certified plastic surgeons at internationally accredited facilities. Board certification by the Mexican Council of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery (CMCPER) ensures surgeons meet rigorous training standards, while JCI or COFEPRIS accreditation confirms facilities follow strict safety protocols. The primary risks stem from unlicensed practitioners and non-accredited clinics, which exist in any country.

Surgeon Verification

Confirm your surgeon holds CMCPER certification and membership in international organizations like ISAPS or ASPS. Request certification numbers, review before-and-after galleries from at least 20 patients, and conduct video consultations with multiple surgeons. Patients from the U.S. and Canada report that surgeons with dual Mexican-international training provide clearer communication and more predictable results.

Facility Standards

Choose clinics with JCI accreditation or COFEPRIS approval, which mandate sterile surgical environments, certified anesthesiologists, and emergency protocols. Non-accredited facilities increase infection risk and anesthesia complications. Patients who selected JCI-accredited centers in Mexico City and Guadalajara reported zero post-operative infections in Bookimed data.

Aftercare Planning

Plan to remain in Mexico for 7–10 days post-surgery for initial follow-ups. Arrange virtual follow-up access with your surgeon for the first 3 months, as limited aftercare access after returning home complicates managing swelling, asymmetry, or infection. Patients from Canada noted that surgeons offering telehealth follow-up reduced revision needs.

Overcorrection Risk

Overcorrection—removing excessive buccal fat—creates a hollowed appearance and premature aging. This risk increases with less experienced surgeons. Ask how much fat your surgeon typically removes (conservative removal of 2–3cc per side is standard) and request examples of patients with similar facial structures.

Cost Considerations

Buccal fat extraction in Mexico costs $500–$880 versus $4,500–$7,500 in the U.S. However, revision procedures for complications can exceed initial savings. Factor in travel costs, extended stay expenses, and potential revision fees when comparing total costs. Patients from the U.S. emphasized that choosing price over credentials led to costlier outcomes.

These safety protocols reflect standards maintained by CMCPER-certified surgeons at accredited Mexican facilities and align with ISAPS international guidelines for facial contouring procedures.

What is the recovery time for buccal fat removal?

Most patients return to work within 7–10 days after buccal fat removal, though swelling peaks around days 3–5 before gradually subsiding. Plastic surgeons certified by CMCPER in Mexico report that initial recovery takes 1–2 weeks, with final results visible after 3–6 months once all swelling resolves.

First Week

Swelling and discomfort peak between days 3–7, requiring a liquid or soft-food diet. Patients from the US noted that keeping the head elevated and using prescribed antiseptic mouthwash several times daily helped minimize swelling and prevent infection.

Weeks 2–4

Most residual swelling and bruising fade during this period. Patients can typically resume light exercise and transition to a normal diet as cleared by their surgeon, though chewing may remain uncomfortable for some.

Months 3–6

Full contouring results emerge as deep tissue swelling completely resolves. Patients from Canada emphasized that patience during this phase is critical, as early results can appear uneven or subtle.

Travel Considerations

International patients should plan to stay in Mexico for 5–7 days post-procedure before flying. Cabin pressure changes can temporarily worsen swelling if patients travel too soon after surgery.

Quick Checklist

  • Plan 7–14 days off work for visible recovery
  • Follow soft-food diet for first 2 weeks
  • Use prescribed mouthwash after every meal
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 3–4 weeks
  • Watch for infection signs (fever, unusual discharge)
  • Delay air travel until day 5–7 post-op

These recovery protocols reflect the standards maintained by CMCPER-certified surgeons at accredited Mexican clinics to maximize patient safety and optimize healing outcomes.

Are the results of buccal fat removal permanent?

Yes, buccal fat removal results are permanent because the extracted buccal fat pads do not regenerate. Plastic surgeons in Mexico certified by CMCPER (Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reconstructiva) confirm that once removed, the fat is gone permanently. However, facial aging and weight fluctuations can alter the overall appearance over time.

Natural Aging Effects

As you age, your face naturally loses volume and skin elasticity decreases. This process can intensify the slimming effects, potentially leading to a hollow or gaunt appearance if too much fat was removed initially. Patients from the US who underwent the procedure in their 20s report noticing more pronounced facial hollowing in their 40s.

Weight Fluctuations

While the specific buccal fat pads won't return, other facial fat cells can expand with significant weight gain. This can alter facial contours and diminish the sculpted effect. Maintaining stable weight helps preserve results long-term.

Surgical Precision Matters

The amount of fat removed and surgical technique directly affect long-term outcomes. CMCPER-certified surgeons in Mexico at accredited clinics like Marroquín & Sandoval and José Cortés Institute emphasize conservative removal to prevent premature aging. Patients report satisfaction rates above 90% when procedures follow evidence-based protocols.

Long-Term Considerations

Board-certified surgeons recommend the procedure for patients over 25 with fully developed facial structure. Younger patients face higher risk of future hollowing as natural facial fat diminishes with age.

These permanence characteristics reflect international standards followed by CMCPER-certified plastic surgeons to ensure optimal long-term aesthetic outcomes and patient safety.

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

Board-certified plastic surgeons in Mexico certified by CMCPER consider ideal candidates for buccal fat extraction to be individuals aged 20–35 with naturally round or full cheeks who desire more defined facial contours. Suitable candidates must have good skin elasticity, realistic expectations about subtle results, and understand that over-removal can cause premature facial hollowing.

Age and Facial Structure

Younger patients with fuller cheeks typically achieve the best outcomes. Individuals over 35 or those with naturally thin faces risk appearing gaunt or aged, as facial fat naturally diminishes with time.

Physical Health Requirements

Candidates must be non-smokers or willing to quit 4–6 weeks before surgery, as nicotine causes vasoconstriction that increases tissue necrosis risk threefold. Good overall health with controlled chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension) is essential for safe healing.

Disqualifying Factors

  • Significant facial asymmetry requiring alternative treatments
  • Poor skin elasticity that won't conform to reduced volume
  • Active facial infections or uncontrolled medical conditions
  • Unrealistic expectations about dramatic transformation

Emotional Readiness

Patients must accept that results are permanent and may become more pronounced with age. CMCPER-certified surgeons require consultations to assess facial anatomy through photos or in-person evaluation, as individual bone structure determines whether buccal fat removal will enhance or detract from facial balance.

These candidacy standards reflect protocols followed by CMCPER-certified plastic surgeons at accredited Mexican clinics to ensure patient safety and satisfaction.

Will I have visible scars after the surgery?

Buccal fat extraction in Mexico leaves no visible external scars because CMCPER-certified plastic surgeons perform the procedure entirely through intraoral incisions inside the mouth. The small incisions are made along the inner cheek, hidden from view, and typically heal within 2–3 weeks without any marks visible to others.

Intraoral Technique

Surgeons access the buccal fat pads through 1–2 cm incisions inside the mouth, positioned between the upper molars and cheek lining. This approach eliminates any risk of facial scarring since no external cuts are made.

Internal Healing

The intraoral incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures that naturally absorb within 7–10 days. Most patients report complete internal healing by 3 weeks, with no visible scarring even inside the mouth. Patients from the US and Canada noted that the incision sites became indistinguishable from surrounding tissue after full recovery.

Rare Complications

Minor internal puckering or slight tissue irregularity may occur in less than 5% of cases, typically due to inadequate post-operative care or infection. These internal changes remain invisible externally and often resolve within 2–3 months. Proper oral hygiene and adherence to post-operative instructions minimize this risk.

CMCPER-certified surgeons in Mexico follow strict intraoral surgical protocols that ensure zero external scarring, making buccal fat extraction one of the most scar-free facial contouring procedures available.

Does the procedure hurt?

Buccal fat extraction in Mexico is performed under local anesthesia, so you feel no pain during the procedure—only pressure and tugging sensations. CMCPER-certified plastic surgeons in Mexico follow international protocols to ensure proper numbing and patient comfort throughout the 20–30 minute surgery.

During Surgery

Local anesthesia blocks all pain signals in the cheek area while you remain awake and alert. Some clinics offer IV sedation for anxious patients, which adds relaxation without general anesthesia risks.

Post-Operative Discomfort

Expect mild to moderate soreness and swelling for 3–7 days after surgery. Patients from the US and Canada report the pain feels like "a bruise on your cheeks" rather than sharp discomfort. Prescribed pain medication and ice packs effectively manage this.

Most patients return to normal activities within 5–7 days. Swelling peaks at 48–72 hours, then decreases rapidly with proper care.

Pain Management

  • Non-opioid pain relievers (ibuprofen, acetaminophen) control soreness
  • Cold compresses reduce swelling and numb residual discomfort
  • Soft diet for 3–5 days prevents chewing strain
  • Sleep with head elevated to minimize swelling

These pain control protocols reflect the standards maintained by CMCPER-certified surgeons at accredited Mexican clinics to maximize patient comfort and safety.
