How Much Does Stem cell transplant for scleroderma Cost in Istanbul?

Stem cell transplant for scleroderma in Istanbul typically costs from $45,000 to $65,000. The total fee depends on the specific protocol used and the length of isolation required. Patients save around 68% compared to the US, where this procedure costs $220,000 on average. These packages usually include high-dose chemotherapy, stem cell harvesting, and extended hospitalization.

  • Autologous stem cell transplant: Typically higher cost due to complex harvesting and immune resetting.
  • Mesenchymal stem cell therapy: Often 60-70% less than full HSCT for inflammation management.
  • Hospital stay: Costs vary based on the 20-21 day isolation period required.
  • Supportive care: Includes immunosuppressive therapy and cryobiological preservation of cells.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul serves as Turkey's primary hub for complex hematology, offering deeper specialty depth than regional cities. Major centers like Memorial Göztepe Hospital provide 55 intensive care units and 19 operating rooms. This infrastructure is vital for patients requiring the strict isolation protocols of autologous transplants. Experts like Dr. Emine Demir bring nearly three decades of experience in regenerative therapies to these protocols.

The surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease
My biggest concern was the procedure itself and the potential side effects. Fortunately, the surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease. It has now been 15 days since my umbilical cord stem cell treatment. To be honest, I haven’t noticed any changes yet, which is to be expected at this early stage. There is still some pain when I touch the injection site. I’ve been sticking to the post-treatment restrictions most of the time, and the clinic itself was good but not entirely modern, which is why I’ve given it four stars. Overall, it was a good experience and now I just need to be patient.

May the peace and mercy of God be with you. As a great program, the people who use it are great. The answer is excellent, but the last time was through MC Hospital Türkiye. The translator is a man named Issa. It is very weak in translation and does not translate. Why is this from the words of the doctor? Because the doctor spoke for a long time, and the translation was short, so there was a lot of things. It does not translate for me, and it did not benefit me at all, and the examination didn't help, doctor

Overall, a great experience!!
I was very skeptical doing this and especially in another country. The staff did a great job with getting everything lined up. Dr. Gurkan was great, all staff was very good and attentive. I would just ask for a little more information on the process and the timeline for treatments to work, etc. Overall, a great experience!!
Everything was ready when we got there. Great hotel. Staff was great.
Language barrier was a little difficult. I would have preferred one assistant the entire time and not so many. Little better communication and information beforehand as to process and procedures.
About Bookimed service
I never knew who I was communicating with. Change in pricing agreement was difficult. Had to pay extra for treatment and TDCS therapy which was agreed to in our original discussions.

FAQ about treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which hospitals in Istanbul perform stem cell transplants for scleroderma?

Istanbul hospitals perform hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT) for scleroderma. Memorial Göztepe, Liv Hospital, and Acibadem are JCI-accredited centers that offer this procedure. They use specialized Bone Marrow Transplantation units and HEPA-filtered isolation rooms. These help reset the immune system for patients with severe systemic sclerosis.

  • Accredited facilities: Clinics like Memorial Göztepe operate within JCI-accredited hospital networks.
  • Specialized infrastructure: Facilities include sterile HEPA-filtered rooms essential for bone marrow transplantation.
  • Multidisciplinary teams: Procedures require coordination between hematology-oncology experts and rheumatology specialists.
  • Clinical technology: Top centers use cell processing and AI-supported diagnostic imaging.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While stem cell therapy is common, scleroderma requires a full immune reset. Memorial Göztepe stands out because it houses over 90 doctors and 19 operating rooms. This scale means multidisciplinary tumor boards review complex autoimmune cases before transplantation begins.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize verifying if a center performs hematopoietic transplants specifically rather than general injections. Successful outcomes depend on the seamless collaboration between your rheumatologist and the transplant specialist.

How is autologous HSCT different from mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy offered at some Istanbul clinics for scleroderma?

Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) uses chemotherapy to reset the immune system. In contrast, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy focuses on tissue repair without immunosuppression. HSCT is a standard, evidence-based intensive procedure. Meanwhile, MSC therapy remains an investigational, low-intensity outpatient alternative.

  • Mechanism of action: HSCT resets the immune system with chemotherapy; MSC therapy targets inflammation and fibrosis.
  • Treatment setting: HSCT requires intensive hospitalization; MSC therapy is typically an outpatient or short-stay protocol.
  • Clinical evidence: HSCT is backed by international guidelines; MSC therapy is currently considered an unproven, investigational approach.
  • Procedure frequency: HSCT is a one-time intensive treatment; MSC therapy often requires several sessions each year.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul hospitals like Memorial Göztepe use multidisciplinary tumor boards for intensive care. In contrast, smaller clinics focus on MSCs. Patients should look for facilities that perform full mobilization and conditioning chemotherapy. These treatments provide the disease-stopping benefits validated by international scleroderma research.

Patient Consensus: Patients often view HSCT as a hard reboot to stop progression. However, they warn that MSC therapy often involves more hype than proven results. Real-world experience suggests HSCT is more physically demanding. However, its ability to treat lung and skin involvement is more established.

Who is an eligible candidate for a stem cell transplant for scleroderma in Istanbul?

Eligible candidates for stem cell transplants in Istanbul typically have active, rapidly progressing diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. This is an autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) for patients whose disease affects internal organs. It is especially meant for those who have not responded to standard immunosuppressive drugs like mycophenolate mofetil.

  • Disease duration: Ideal candidates are within 5 years of their first symptom other than Raynaud’s.
  • Organ involvement: Patients often show early active interstitial lung disease or significant skin thickening.
  • Medical fitness: Candidates must have sufficient heart, lung, and renal reserves for chemotherapy.
  • Treatment history: Eligibility requires documented progression despite trying 1 or 2 standard immunosuppressants.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Only about 3% of scleroderma patients meet the strict criteria for this procedure. Major Istanbul networks like Memorial Health Group have over 25 years of experience. They use multidisciplinary tumor boards to screen candidates. This ensures patients are biologically fit enough to survive the intensive immune-system reset.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that early screening is vital, especially for those with aggressive lung involvement. Patients also highlight that younger age with strong heart function greatly improves the chances of being accepted for treatment.

What are the primary risks or side effects of a stem cell transplant for scleroderma?

Stem cell transplant for scleroderma involves high-dose chemotherapy. This treatment carries risks like severe infections, organ toxicity, and treatment-related mortality. Patients may have acute gastrointestinal distress and profound cytopenias. The immune system reset process can lead to long-term risks like secondary autoimmune conditions or infertility.

  • Infection risk: Conditioning chemotherapy temporarily obliterates white blood cell counts, leaving the body highly vulnerable to infection.
  • Organ toxicity: Intense regimens may stress the heart, lungs, or kidneys during recovery.
  • Treatment-related mortality: Clinical data shows a short-term mortality risk between 5% and 10%.
  • Gastrointestinal distress: High-dose chemotherapy often causes severe mucositis, nausea, vomiting, and painful mouth sores.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul clinics like Memorial Göztepe Hospital use diagnostic tools to monitor organ function. These tools include 3 Tesla MRI and digital PET/CT. Patients should look for clinics with both cardiovascular and oncology departments. These departments allow prompt care if chemotherapy stresses the heart or lungs during engraftment.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe the procedure as a life-or-death decision with an intense recovery period. Patients emphasize that while it offers significant symptom relief, it is not a guaranteed cure.

What is a stem cell transplant for scleroderma?

Stem cell transplant for scleroderma is an intensive immunotherapy known as autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. It involves using a patient's own blood-forming cells to reset a malfunctioning immune system. This procedure aims to halt progressive organ fibrosis and connective tissue damage.

  • Procedure goal: Reset the immune system to stop aggressive skin and organ thickening.
  • Cell source: Uses the patient's own harvested stem cells rather than donor cells.
  • Treatment phases: Includes stem cell collection, high-dose chemotherapy, and cell reinfusion.
  • Patient eligibility: Reserved for rapidly progressive diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis with lung involvement.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often associate stem cells with regenerative therapy. But in scleroderma transplants, the real therapeutic work happens during the intensive immunoablation phase. High-dose chemotherapy wipes out faulty immune cells before the infusion. Data shows that clinics like Memorial Göztepe Hospital use multidisciplinary tumor boards. These boards manage complex protocols and make sure the high-risk conditioning phase is tailored to each patient's lung and heart capacity.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that this is a high-stakes, last-resort option rather than a gentle therapy. Success often means achieving drug-free remission and stopping further disease progression. It is not about reversing existing scarring.
