Professor Dr. Wolfgang Gstoettner is a leading specialist in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) medicine. He is the Head of the University Hospital ENT Clinic at the Medical University of Vienna. Dr. Gstoettner is known for his pioneering work, including Austria’s first active middle ear and auditory brain stem implantations.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Gstöttner is one of Austria’s most distinguished specialists in otorhinolaryngology (ENT), otology, and neurotology, internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in cochlear implantation and hearing restoration surgery. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating in the early 1980s, and soon began his residency in ENT and head and neck surgery at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). 1980s – Completed medical studies and specialized in otorhinolaryngology and head & neck surgery.
1990s – Appointed Professor of ENT Surgery and began extensive research on hearing implants and skull base surgery.
2000s – Became Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Medical University of Vienna, where he expanded the university’s cochlear implant program into one of Europe’s largest and most advanced.
2010s – Oversaw international collaborations on auditory neuroscience, minimally invasive ear surgery, and facial nerve reconstruction.
Today – Serves as a leading consultant at Wiener Privatklinik and continues to perform complex ear, skull base, and implant surgeries while teaching and mentoring future ENT surgeons.
