Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.

FAQ about Cataract surgery (one eye) in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Will cataract surgery hurt?

Cataract surgery in Spain is generally painless because surgeons use topical anesthesia. This quick, 10–15 minute outpatient procedure involves numbing the eye surface before removing the clouded lens. While you remain awake and may feel mild pressure, specialized drops ensure you experience no sharp sensations.

  • Anesthesia method: Topical numbing drops provide pain-free surgery without the need for needles.
  • Surgical sensation: Patients typically report seeing bright lights or feeling cool water during the procedure.
  • Post-operative recovery: Vision improves within 48 hours with only mild, grit-like irritation for several hours.
  • Expert surgical staff: Top surgeons in Marbella perform over 3,600 annual procedures using all-laser technology.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks third globally for medical travelers, largely because high-volume clinics offer advanced laser-assisted cataract surgery. Some centers, like Quironsalud Madrid or Centro Medico Teknon, handle over 10,000 to 25,000 patients annually. This massive procedural volume means surgeons have refined techniques that minimize tissue trauma and eliminate the need for heavy sedation.

Patient Consensus: Many feel a brief stinging from the numbing drops lasting 10 seconds, but they report no sharp pain after. Most patients compare the post-surgery sensation to having a tiny eyelash in the eye that clears quickly.

Will I be awake during the surgery?

You remain awake during cataract surgery in Spain because the surgeon needs your cooperation. While you are conscious, your eye is fully numbed with topical drops. Most specialized ophthalmologists also provide light intravenous sedation to ensure you feel relaxed and experience no pain.

  • Anesthesia method: Surgeons use numbing eye drops often combined with intravenous twilight sedation.
  • Surgical duration: The actual laser or manual extraction typically takes only 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Patient interaction: You may need to follow light cues or look in specific directions.
  • Visual experience: Bright lights and shifting shadows are visible rather than the surgical instruments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer standard extraction, centers like Quirónsalud Marbella utilize all-laser technology for higher precision. Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel performs over 3,600 annual surgeries, meaning his team manages patient anxiety daily. If you are nervous, confirm your package includes intravenous Versed. This specific sedation often results in zero memory of the procedure while keeping you safely awake.

Patient Consensus: Many describe the experience as a brief, relaxing light show rather than a surgery. It is common to feel mild pressure but no actual pain during the 15-minute session.

How long does cataract surgery take?

Cataract surgery in Spain is a rapid outpatient procedure typically lasting 10 to 15 minutes. While the surgical phase is quick, patients should expect to spend 2 to 4 hours at the clinic for pre-operative dilation and brief post-surgical monitoring.

  • Preparation time: Staff require 60 to 90 minutes for pupil dilation and local numbing.
  • Surgical duration: Modern all-laser or ultrasound techniques usually finish within 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Immediate recovery: Patients rest for 15 to 30 minutes before discharge on the same day.
  • Vision stabilization: Initial clarity returns in 48 hours, with full stabilization within 8 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s private clinics provide a massive speed advantage over the public system. Patients bypass year-long waitlists, securing surgery dates within 3 to 4 weeks. High-volume specialists like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel perform over 3,600 annual surgeries, ensuring peak efficiency and safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients often feel surprised by how fast the actual surgery ends. They recommend expecting daily vision fluctuations for the first 6 weeks while the brain adapts to the implant.

What are the types of cataract surgery available?

Cataract surgery in Spain primarily utilizes phacoemulsification or advanced femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). These methods involve removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with specialized intraocular lenses like monofocal, multifocal, or light-adjustable options to restore clear vision.

  • Phacoemulsification: Standard ultrasound-based technique used to break up and suction the cloudy lens.
  • Laser-assisted surgery: Uses femtosecond lasers for precise corneal incisions and softening dense cataracts.
  • Extracapsular extraction: Manual removal of the lens in one piece for exceptionally advanced cataracts.
  • Micro-incision surgery: Advanced phacoemulsification performed through sub-2.2 mm incisions for faster healing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Top Spanish specialists like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel at Quirónsalud Marbella perform over 3,600 annual surgeries. This high volume often allows clinics to offer advanced Vivity and PanOptix lenses. These premium options are frequently prioritized over standard monofocal lenses found in lower-volume centers.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that monofocal lenses provide excellent distance clarity but still require reading glasses. Those choosing multifocal lenses appreciate the freedom from glasses despite occasional halos around overnight lights.

How can I tell if I have cataracts and might need surgery?

You may have cataracts if you notice painless blurring, heightened glare from sun or headlights, faded color perception, or frequent vision prescription changes. Surgery is indicated when these symptoms impair daily activities like driving or reading and cannot be corrected by glasses.

  • Vision changes: Progressive cloudiness, dimming, or `ghosting` double vision in one eye occurs.
  • Light sensitivity: Increased glare and halos appearing around lights, especially during night driving.
  • Visual threshold: Experts recommend surgery if vision cannot be corrected beyond 20/30 or 20/40.
  • Surgical triggers: Difficulty performing routine tasks safely indicates it is time for an ophthalmologist.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients prioritize surgeons like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel at Quirónsalud Marbella because he performs 3,600+ annual procedures. This high volume often leads to faster recovery times via micro-incision or all-laser techniques. Choosing an experienced surgeon who uses advanced biometrics early ensures more accurate intraocular lens sizing before cataracts become too dense.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report that sun glare was their primary reason for seeking surgery as it made driving feel unsafe. They often regret waiting, noting that cataracts can progress faster than expected and complicate the procedure.
