In the case of a bilateral abdominal hernia there are weaknesses on both sides of the lower abdominal wall, resulting in bulges in the groin containing part of the peritoneum or abdominal fat. Many hernias are asymptomatic, but some become incarcerated or strangulated, causing pain and requiring immediate surgery after clinical diagnosis. There are two main ways surgery for hernias can be carried out: open surgery (where a cut is made to allow the surgeon to push the lump back into the tummy) and laparoscopy (keyhole surgery - this is a less invasive, but more difficult, technique where several smaller cuts are made, allowing the surgeon to use various special instruments to repair the hernia).
In both cases, the operation is performed simultaneously on both sides, unless there is no need to repair the hernia on one of the sides.
