What is a Vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a quick and safe minor surgery that permanently prevents sperm from entering your semen — making it one of the most effective forms of birth control for men.
A specialist urology doctor will administer a local anesthetic and use small instruments to create a tiny incision in the foreskin to access the spermatic duct. They will then cut and tie off the ends of the duct on both sides to secure it before placing it back in its original position. This is done without the need to puncture the skin again. Once the procedure is complete, the specialist urology doctor will close the incision with small plastic sheets. Patients can typically travel back immediately. The entire surgery takes about 30 minutes in total.
What is a Vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a form of permanent birth control for men. It involves cutting or tying the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, preventing sperm from being released during ejaculation. Without sperm in the semen, fertilization cannot occur.
Sperm accounts for only 10–15% of the total volume of semen, so after a vasectomy, the amount of semen ejaculated remains nearly the same.
A vasectomy is approximately 99% effective and is considered a safe and reliable permanent contraceptive method.
Vasectomy Procedure :
The most commonly used technique today is the no-scalpel vasectomy, which is the global standard. It uses local anesthesia and involves making very small incisions—no more than 5 millimeters—on both sides of the scrotum. The entire procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes.
After the vasectomy, it is recommended to avoid physical exercise for 2–3 days and refrain from ejaculation for about one week.
Post-Vasectomy Confirmation :
After a vasectomy, you are not sterile immediately because sperm may still be present in the vas deferens. You must continue using other birth control methods and confirm the success of the procedure through semen analysis.
It is recommended to test the semen between 8–16 weeks after the vasectomy.
Criteria for Confirmed Sterility :
1.No sperm found in the semen, or
2.Only non-motile sperm found at a concentration below 100,000 per milliliter
If motile (moving) sperm are still present, follow-up tests are required every 4–6 weeks until no sperm are detected.
☑️ Includes all medication and post-surgery care
☑️ Covers a vas deferens tissue examination after the procedure for confirmation
☑️ Follow-up semen analysis at 2 and 4 months
