Additional information
At Hospital Ruber Internacional in Madrid, we offer Gamma Knife ICON radiosurgery, an advanced non-invasive treatment for a range of neurological conditions, including benign and malignant brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and selected functional disorders such as essential tremor and trigeminal neuralgia.
The treatment is performed under the supervision of Dr. Roberto Martínez Álvarez, one of Spain’s leading specialists in Gamma Knife radiosurgery. He has performed more than 7,000 Gamma Knife procedures and is considered one of the pioneers of radiosurgery in Europe.
Why choose Gamma Knife ICON?
• Non-invasive treatment — no surgical incision is required.
• High precision — radiation is focused accurately on the target while protecting surrounding healthy brain tissue as much as possible.
• Fast recovery — many patients can leave the hospital on the same day and return to normal daily activities shortly afterward.
• Alternative to open surgery — Gamma Knife may be suitable for selected tumors, vascular malformations and neurological conditions where conventional surgery is not the preferred option.
• Minimal rehabilitation — most patients do not require the recovery period associated with open brain surgery.
• Treatment in a single session in many cases, depending on the diagnosis, size and location of the lesion.
Gamma Knife treatment pathway
Preliminary consultation and diagnostics
Usually 1–2 days.
The medical team reviews previous MRI, CT scans and specialist reports. Additional MRI or CT imaging may be performed if required to determine whether Gamma Knife is appropriate.
Treatment planning
Approximately 30–90 minutes.
Neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and medical physicists create an individual treatment plan based on the exact size, shape and location of the lesion.
Gamma Knife procedure
Usually completed in one treatment session.
The duration may range from several minutes to more than one hour depending on the complexity of the case and the number of targets.
Post-treatment monitoring
After treatment, the patient is observed by the medical team. In many cases, discharge is possible on the same day. Follow-up MRI and specialist consultations are scheduled according to the diagnosis.
Ruber Internacional Gamma Knife team
Treatment is provided by a multidisciplinary team that may include:
• Dr. Roberto Martínez Álvarez — neurosurgeon and Gamma Knife specialist.
• Neuroradiologists — responsible for detailed brain imaging and accurate target definition.
• Medical physicists — responsible for treatment planning and radiation-dose precision.
• Neurology and oncology specialists — involved when additional neurological or oncological management is required.
What is included in the Gamma Knife package?
• Initial specialist consultation and medical assessment.
• Review of previous medical records and imaging.
• MRI and/or CT required for radiosurgical planning.
• Individual Gamma Knife treatment planning.
• Gamma Knife ICON radiosurgery procedure.
• Neurosurgical and medical-physics team.
• Post-treatment monitoring.
• Follow-up recommendations.
Gamma Knife technology
The Gamma Knife ICON system is designed specifically for intracranial radiosurgery and allows highly focused radiation to be delivered to the target with very high accuracy while minimizing exposure of surrounding healthy tissue.
Who may be considered for treatment?
Gamma Knife may be considered for selected patients with:
• Benign brain tumors.
• Malignant or metastatic brain tumors.
• Meningiomas.
• Vestibular schwannomas.
• Arteriovenous malformations.
• Trigeminal neuralgia.
• Essential tremor.
• Other selected intracranial neurological conditions.
Final eligibility depends on the diagnosis, lesion size, location, previous treatments and overall medical condition. The medical team reviews the MRI and clinical history before confirming whether Gamma Knife is the most appropriate treatment.
