About the clinic

BAU International Hospital is an orthopedic center in Batumi, Georgia. It specializes in total hip replacement through the direct anterior approach. The practice focuses on the bikini incision technique for better cosmetic results. Dr. Mikheil Mikeladze has led the orthopedics department since 2016. He is a PhD candidate researching patient outcomes in hip replacement surgery.

The hospital introduced two safety systems first in Georgia for joint surgery. Surgeons use a ventilated helmet system to lower infection risks. The team also uses the American STERIS ARCH leg positioner for precise traction. This device ensures repeatable limb positioning during the procedure. Patients follow a clear seven-stage recovery timeline after surgery.

Most patients walk independently by the second day. Dr. Mikeladze received the Ronald Burkle Fellowship from the Anterior Hip Foundation. He also completed fellowships at Edgewood Surgical Hospital and with Dr. Jonathan Yerasimides. International patients get online consultations and airport transfers. Staff assist in English, Georgian, and Russian.

BAU International Hospital: more details about the clinic

Georgia, Batumi

BAU International Hospital in Batumi is a focused medical center for orthopedic care. Established in 2016, the hospital runs a specialized orthopedics and traumatology department. The facility follows a single-doctor practice model dedicated to hip joint health. A team of 8 physicians oversees both surgical and conservative treatments.

Academic Achievements and Recognitions

Dr. Mikheil Mikeladze leads the orthopedic department. He has headed the department since the hospital opened in 2016. Dr. Mikeladze is currently a PhD candidate at New Vision University, researching surgical approaches to improve hip replacement outcomes.

The surgical team has earned several international honors and training grants:

  • Ronald Burkle Fellowship of the Anterior Hip Foundation
  • Fellowship at Edgewood Surgical Hospital in the United States
  • Fellowship with Dr. Jonathan Yerasimides in Kentucky, USA
  • Nomination for the Med Award as an Innovator orthopedic trauma surgeon

These fellowships reflect a commitment to international surgical standards. Dr. Mikeladze also trains in anatomical labs for primary and revision hip cases.

Hip Replacement and Orthopedic Specialties

The clinic focuses on total hip replacement using the direct anterior approach. This technique uses a bikini incision to minimize visible scarring. Surgeons follow a conservative philosophy – surgery happens only when non-surgical methods fail.

The practice addresses hip osteoarthritis (coxarthrosis), which causes groin pain and morning stiffness. For patients not ready for surgery, the clinic offers several conservative options:

  • Weight control and loading correction
  • Specialized physiotherapy and exercises
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Injection therapy to reduce joint inflammation

Specialists use preoperative digital templating to ensure accuracy. This software lets surgeons plan implant size and leg length using X-ray data before the first incision. Such detailed planning helps match the surgical approach to each patient's specific needs.

Surgical Technologies and Safety Protocols

The hospital introduced two safety systems to Georgia for the first time. Surgeons use ventilated surgical helmet systems, often called "space suits." These helmets create a sterile barrier that reduces particles reaching the wound, lowering the risk of post-operative infections.

The operating room features the American STERIS ARCH leg positioner. This device holds the limb in a stable, repeatable position throughout the procedure. It allows precise adjustments of traction force and limb angle. By controlling these factors, surgeons improve precision while reducing strain on soft tissues.

Rehabilitation and International Patient Services

Recovery follows a structured 7-stage timeline. Early mobilization begins with a physiotherapist just hours after surgery. Most patients are discharged by day two – once they can walk independently and manage stairs. Full recovery planning typically wraps up at three months with the surgeon's approval.

The clinic provides several services for international travelers:

  • Online consultations in English or Russian to review X-rays sent from abroad
  • Airport transfers upon arrival in Batumi
  • Accommodation at the partner hotel Best Western Plus Batumi
  • Professional coordination in English, Georgian, and Russian

The diagnostic suite includes MRI, CT scans, and digital X-rays for rapid work-ups. International patients receive a treatment plan after their online review. This allows travelers to understand their recovery milestones before arriving.

4 days ago I went to the emergency room with a vertigo diagnosis. I stayed in my room for a total of 2 days. I want to thank everyone, from the doctors in the emergency department to the nurses, and from the staff on shift to everyone. I especially want to thank the doctors—they are very attentive, and most of them speak English. There are also staff members who know Turkish. It’s a very clean hospital. Once again, I thank everyone very much for your efforts and your work. May God not put anyone in the hospital. May God grant all patients a speedy recovery, but they are not replaceable either.

That evening I went to the emergency room with acute atrial fibrillation. I was admitted very quickly and without any formalities at all, and I was actually in the appropriate specialist department within no more than 1 minute, and after 2 minutes I was completely connected up. Contrary to some negative reviews, the staff were friendly and made a competent impression. From the security man at the entrance to the nurse. I would like to expressly thank everyone involved. In a similar case in Spain, I sat in the waiting room for a full three hours before I was even let in. There was also enough English-speaking staff, so there were no major communication problems.

Whenever I need a traumatologist, I always go to this clinic. They see you quickly, the doctors are attentive and kind. The women working in the X-ray room are also very pleasant. When I was at reception about 3 years ago, there was just one woman and she didn’t speak Russian; now there are many operators who do know Russian, explain everything very well, and they’re friendly. The prices are high, like in all clinics—about 130 lari for an X-ray plus a traumatologist.

I would like to express my huge gratitude to gynecologist Nana Turmanidze. Throughout my entire pregnancy, I was observed by her. She approached the management of the pregnancy very responsibly. I am 41 years old, and it was my first pregnancy. Every month I came in for an appointment and almost every month I had an ultrasound. She prescribed all the necessary medications and kept the intake under control. In addition, Nana is a pleasant person to communicate with. She is always brief, clear, and to the point—but attentive at the same time. And I’ll add personally: Nana is the most beautiful girl! Just Miss Georgia 2026! I would like to thank doctor Tamaz Kmaladze. During my entire pregnancy, I went to him for ultrasound. Tamaz is a very attentive specialist with enormous experience. He even correctly determined the baby’s sex at 9 weeks! And what a great sense of humor he has! He always supported and encouraged me. I gave birth at 40 weeks. The baby is completely healthy. I would like to express my huge gratitude to gynecologist Rusudan Diasamidze. I have uterine fibroids, several nodes, including 2 large ones. I wouldn’t have been able to give birth on my own—the fibroids didn’t allow the uterus to contract. Rusudan performed the cesarean section with jewelry-like precision! Around all of these nodes, without damaging anything and leaving the uterus intact. After the surgery, Rusudan came by and helped put the uterus back so it would contract. I have never encountered a level of professionalism and care like this. Just one conversation with Rusudan is enough to understand how great of a specialist she is and what a kind and responsive person she is. I simply immediately trusted her for such a difficult operation without any doubts. I didn’t choose who I would end up giving birth to—so I was lucky to have such a miracle! I recommend all the specialists mentioned. You can contact them without hesitation and trust them. They are simply the best team of doctors!

The best place I’ve ever been. I came to Emergency with a fever and suspicion of inflammation. Immediately, without any line, they accompanied me to the doctors. They examined me and filled out a questionnaire. They did: an ultrasound, an X-ray, blood pressure measurement, a cardiogram, and put in an IV drip, plus blood and urine tests. They brought my temperature down right away—when I arrived it was 38, and after an hour there was no fever anymore. You shouldn’t worry about the prices at all; they took only 180 lari for everything!! At the same time, at the republican hospital, for just one blood test in the emergency department they charged 263! 😡

I can’t say it’s the best hospital in Georgia, but in this city it is the best. The doctors are competent, and the service is much more humane compared to other hospitals. In the city where there is the Republican Hospital—this is real salvation, not something else.

I visited the ophthalmologist Dr. Зарима Чавлеишвили. I’m extremely satisfied. She is a real professional and a doctor with a capital letter. The consultation is thorough and precise, without any unnecessary words; she explains everything clearly and understandably. The diagnostics and recommendations are top-notch—it's obvious she has enormous experience and that she treats patients attentively. Everything is quick, well-organized, and as correct as possible. I feel confident that I’m in reliable hands. Rating: only 10 out of 10.

I went to gynecologist Mziva Khalvashi. She’s good, professional, and speaks Russian. I wouldn’t say she’s overly cutesy, but she is very competent. She listened to me carefully, asked questions, examined me on the chair, and referred me for the right tests and an ultrasound. She told me to do everything right away and come back. Besides Mziva, I also liked the rest of the staff: 1. The nurses who took blood and did other tests were professional and polite. 2. The ultrasound specialist Teona Khamalдзе is wonderful—she looked at everything very carefully and thoroughly (pelvic ultrasound), explained everything in detail, was very kind and pleasant to communicate with, and answered all questions. Even pain was not something I experienced with her; I barely felt anything. A great specialist! 3. I did an ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys with Manana Mikeladze, and she was also polite and very professional. After all of this, I went back to Mziva. Yes, I had to wait some time for the surgery, but she still saw me again to prescribe treatment (even though it was already well past 17:00, and she accepts patients until 17:00). She prescribed treatment, and I’m starting to take it—I’ll see how everything goes during the process. But overall, I want to highlight the politeness and friendliness, the high professionalism and competence of all the staff I dealt with (even the nurses in the gynecology department were good). The clinic is modern: there is water in coolers of different temperatures, cups, the renovation is also good, and there are many places to sit. Russian is spoken both at the reception and by the doctors and nurses. You can even measure your height and weigh yourself in the halls. Also, I noticed that in the gynecology offices there is no “through” area—either the nurse closes the door from inside with a lock, or there are curtains from ceiling to floor. Nobody leaves the door open in the office, nobody is just walking around. So the chance of being humiliated because the whole hospital saw you naked is extremely minimal—patients are treated with great respect: Before going to this clinic, I looked through reviews and was worried whether I should go despite such terrible reviews, but I still went and I don’t regret it. Very pleasant impressions, and I even left after all these examinations in a good mood, despite how much money I spent and the fact that I wasn’t feeling well :) It’s surprising, but it’s a fact 😅

I want to say a huge thank you to the staff. My nose was hit pretty badly. They arranged everything quickly, took an X-ray, and the doctors consulted me. They came to help. Thank you very much for your care 🤗

Hello, I also had surgery at this hospital. Because of certain reasons, I needed to have the “bordeaux” surgery. I asked them for pricing information, but they didn’t give it to me. After staying there for one day, they told me that the surgery cost $900. I asked them what this fee was for and requested the file of what procedures were performed in return for that amount, but even though we spoke Turkish, after we made this request, they acted as if they don’t speak Turkish. They went around as if they got up and the atmosphere was like they were forcing their way in like at an airport, right next to me—like they were going to run away with four security guards. They threw themselves into the situation and made me stand and wait, surgically, for 4–5 hours while I was on my feet. I wish I hadn’t gone, and because of the surgery they did, I’m in a ruined state right now. The date I was there was 15 November 2024. I don’t know who owns these hospitals. This can’t happen like this—people like this are getting scammed. I am warning the Turks who come here for vacation: don’t get scammed. They helped me in every way with care and attention until the surgery. After the surgery was over, they didn’t take care of me. I was left alone with my pain. They put 4–5 patients in one room and keep them there.
