Dr. Mikheil Mikeladze is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon who has headed the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at BAU International Hospital in Batumi since 2016. His surgical practice is dedicated to the hip joint: total hip replacement through the direct anterior approach with a bikini incision.
Hip Replacement Specialization and Techniques
Dr. Mikeladze performs total hip replacement for patients with hip osteoarthritis (coxarthrosis). Through the anterior approach he reaches the joint through the natural space between the muscles: the muscle fibres are moved aside rather than cut and stitched. The bikini incision is short and follows the natural skin crease in the groin.
He operates in ventilated surgical helmet systems and uses the American STERIS ARCH leg positioner; both systems were introduced in Georgia for the first time in his practice. In standard cases there are no drains or dressing changes. Most patients get up and take their first steps with a walking frame within a few hours of surgery and are usually discharged within two days at most.
He sees surgery as the most extreme form of treatment: when a patient does not need an operation yet, conservative treatment comes first.
