Patients save around 77% compared to the US, where the average price is $120,000. Standard inclusions typically cover the surgical procedure, anesthesia, and initial hospital stay in cities like Milan or Rome.

"I declare with all responsibility that the San Rafael clinic in Milan is the best
The professionalism of the doctors, the newest equipment, the care of the clinic staff are among the best in Europe. The treatment and operations in Russia and Germany have been carried out, I declare with all responsibility that the San Rafael clinic in Milan is the best. After treating my father’s stomach cancer, I visited the neurologist and gastroenterologist and myself. Thank you so much to the coordinator, the doctors from the international department of the clinic. More in the world of such doctors. THANK YOU!

We received a remote consultation at the San Rafael Clinic, for us this format was not suitable, because the second opinion is for those who either confirm the diagnosis or ask for another alternative treatment, we were told that after the consultation, continue the same, although we were treated and there was no result, as a result, after a remote consultation, we were not assigned anything, plus all communication was extended for a couple of months, because the clinic’s response rate was very low. We could not get any concrete answer, so this consultation was useless for us.

"Just returned from there
Just returned from there. Everything was top notch, and doctors, and the organization of the stay. It took 2 days from the first call to the bookmarked to my arrival in Milan. The next morning, consult a doctor. All questions were solved almost instantly, the results of all analyzes and studies were ready the next day. And constantly in touch with the coordinator Catherine and care worker Alexander. In my trips to the clinic, I was accompanied by a super translator Yulya Sukhneva. Thanks to the clear and professional work of Julia, Kati and Alexander, my stay was very short, I saved money on the hotel. The hotel, by the way, was excellent, up to the clinic, 200 meters. Yes, and more, the prices for consultations and analyzes are quite comparable with those in Moscow. I spent much less money than I thought at first. Thank you all!

FAQ about Throat cancer operation in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the best hospitals for throat cancer surgery in Italy?

Italy serves as a premier destination for throat cancer surgery, with top-tier hospitals in Milan, Rome, and Naples. Leading centers like the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) and Maria Cecilia Hospital utilize advanced technology to perform complex laryngeal, pharyngeal, and hypopharyngeal resections safely.

  • Specialized oncology hubs: Milan features the European Institute of Oncology, a leader in head and neck surgery.
  • High surgical volume: Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome performs one of Italy's highest counts of laryngeal surgeries.
  • Robotic-assisted technology: Maria Cecilia Hospital in Bologna utilizes the Da Vinci Xi System for precision.
  • Expert surgical teams: Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy in Rome offers specialized oncology and ENT expertise.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian oncology centers often function as research hubs where precision medicine is standard practice. For instance, centers like Maria Cecilia Hospital and Ruesch Clinic both utilize the Da Vinci Xi robot. This consistency in high-end technology across different cities suggests excellent accessibility for minimally invasive throat surgery throughout the country.

What types of surgery are typically performed for throat cancer in Italy?

Throat cancer surgery in Italy prioritizes organ preservation and functional recovery through minimally invasive techniques like Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) and laser microsurgery. Specialized centers provide comprehensive options ranging from conservative endoscopic resections to radical laryngectomies and advanced microvascular reconstructions for complex cases.

  • Minimally invasive TORS: Uses Da Vinci systems for precision tumor removal through the mouth.
  • Partial laryngectomy: Removes diseased parts of the larynx while preserving natural speech functions.
  • Total laryngectomy: Required for advanced stages, involving complete voice box removal and stoma.
  • Neck dissection: Strategic removal of lymph nodes to prevent or treat cancer spread.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian surgical expertise often centers around JCI-accredited facilities like Maria Cecilia Hospital and Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy. These centers frequently utilize the Da Vinci Xi system for head and neck oncology. Data shows these robotic approaches can significantly reduce recovery times to just 2–4 weeks compared to traditional open surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize requesting HPV testing and TORS eligibility screenings early to potentially avoid more invasive surgeries. Many suggest involving a speech therapist before the procedure to prepare for post-operative rehabilitation and swallowing challenges.

How long is the recovery period after throat cancer surgery in Italy?

Throat cancer surgery recovery in Italy typically requires a 7 to 14-day hospital stay. Initial rehabilitation often lasts 30 days. Full recovery, including speech and swallowing adjustments, generally takes several months. Italian centers prioritize Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols to optimize healing times.

  • Hospital stay: Patients stay 12 to 14 days under Italian ERAS protocols for monitoring.
  • Initial healing: Feeding tubes are typically utilized for 10 days during the first post-operative phase.
  • Activity resumption: Most patients return to normal daily activities within 4 to 8 weeks.
  • Speech therapy: Intensive vocal rehabilitation often begins during the first month of recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian hospitals like Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy handle 15,000 yearly hospitalizations, highlighting a high-volume expertise rarely found elsewhere. Data shows that opting for clinics using Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) can reduce your hospital stay to just 1 or 2 days compared to standard open procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients often note that while the first 2 weeks are physically demanding, the structured speech therapy provided in Italian clinics is crucial for regaining confidence. Many suggest preparing for a liquid-only diet during the initial 10 days post-surgery.

Will throat cancer surgery affect my speech or ability to eat?

Throat cancer surgery often impacts speech and eating, though rehabilitation significantly improves outcomes. Partial procedures may cause temporary hoarseness. Total laryngectomy requires learning new communication methods like tracheoesophageal puncture valves. Swallowing challenges are common, but most patients return to soft food diets within 6 months.

  • Speech quality: Expect hoarse or breathy tones after vocal cord surgery or partial laryngectomy.
  • Voice restoration: Tracheoesophageal puncture valves help 70% to 80% of patients regain speech after training.
  • Swallowing recovery: Specialized exercises help manage dysphagia and prevent food from entering the windpipe.
  • Nutritional support: Temporary feeding tubes are common while tissues heal and throat swelling subsides.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian oncology centers like Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy utilize aggressive, EU-funded rehabilitation protocols. Data shows starting speech and swallowing exercises on day 1 is vital. If swallowing does not improve by month 3, patients should screen for throat narrowing or strictures.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that while their voice sounds different, daily practice makes communication effective. Consistency with swallowing exercises is the most cited factor for returning to a regular diet.

How are Italian hospitals equipped for robotic and minimally invasive throat cancer procedures?

Italian oncology centers utilize advanced robotic platforms like the Da Vinci Xi and Medrobotics Flex to perform high-precision throat cancer surgeries. These facilities often serve as European pioneers for Transoral Robotic Surgery, enabling tumor removal through the mouth to avoid invasive external incisions.

  • Robotic systems: Hospitals utilize Da Vinci Xi for 3D high-definition, wristed surgical precision.
  • Specialized techniques: Surgeons perform Transoral Laser Microsurgery (TLM) for effective, functional-sparing laryngeal treatments.
  • Pioneering institutions: Centers like Istituto Europeo di Oncologia (IEO) led Italy in TORS adoption.
  • Reconstructive technology: Locally developed Symani systems support critical microvascular repairs during complex reconstructive phases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many countries offer basic robotic surgery, Italian centers like Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy integrate high-volume robotic departments with specialized first-aid accreditation. This combination ensures that complex throat cancer patients receive immediate, multidisciplinary emergency support alongside their high-tech elective surgical care.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the significant reduction in recovery time, often returning to normal eating functions much faster than with traditional open surgery. They frequently highlight the relief of avoiding permanent tracheotomies due to the precision of transoral robotic access.

What is the typical rehabilitation pathway after throat cancer surgery in Italy?

Rehabilitation after throat cancer surgery in Italy utilizes a multidisciplinary approach focused on restoring speech, swallowing, and physical function. Patients typically stay 1–2 weeks in clinics like Maria Cecilia Hospital or Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy, following Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols to accelerate healing.

  • Speech restoration: Logopedia (speech therapy) starts 4–6 weeks post-surgery to develop alternative communication methods.
  • Swallowing therapy: Specialists guide the transition from feeding tubes to pureed and solid foods.
  • Lymphedema management: Manual lymphatic drainage and neck exercises effectively reduce swelling around the surgical site.
  • Supportive care: Integrated psychological counseling addresses emotional adjustments, body image, and long-term quality of life.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian centers of excellence often integrate advanced robotic technologies like the Da Vinci Xi System for laryngeal procedures. This minimally invasive approach frequently results in shorter hospital stays and faster initiation of swallowing therapy. When choosing a facility, prioritize hospitals with JCI accreditation, such as Maria Cecilia Hospital, which handle high volumes of complex cases.

Patient Consensus: Survivors emphasize that while energy and taste take 6–12 months to stabilize, early mobilization is crucial. Many suggest requesting a written rehabilitation plan in Italian to track milestones like feeding tube removal.
