"I declare with all responsibility that the San Rafael clinic in Milan is the best
The professionalism of the doctors, the newest equipment, the care of the clinic staff are among the best in Europe. The treatment and operations in Russia and Germany have been carried out, I declare with all responsibility that the San Rafael clinic in Milan is the best. After treating my father’s stomach cancer, I visited the neurologist and gastroenterologist and myself. Thank you so much to the coordinator, the doctors from the international department of the clinic. More in the world of such doctors. THANK YOU!

We received a remote consultation at the San Rafael Clinic, for us this format was not suitable, because the second opinion is for those who either confirm the diagnosis or ask for another alternative treatment, we were told that after the consultation, continue the same, although we were treated and there was no result, as a result, after a remote consultation, we were not assigned anything, plus all communication was extended for a couple of months, because the clinic’s response rate was very low. We could not get any concrete answer, so this consultation was useless for us.

"Just returned from there
Just returned from there. Everything was top notch, and doctors, and the organization of the stay. It took 2 days from the first call to the bookmarked to my arrival in Milan. The next morning, consult a doctor. All questions were solved almost instantly, the results of all analyzes and studies were ready the next day. And constantly in touch with the coordinator Catherine and care worker Alexander. In my trips to the clinic, I was accompanied by a super translator Yulya Sukhneva. Thanks to the clear and professional work of Julia, Kati and Alexander, my stay was very short, I saved money on the hotel. The hotel, by the way, was excellent, up to the clinic, 200 meters. Yes, and more, the prices for consultations and analyzes are quite comparable with those in Moscow. I spent much less money than I thought at first. Thank you all!

FAQ about Hemicolectomy in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the main risks and complications of hemicolectomy?

Hemicolectomy risks include anastomotic leaks, surgical site infections, and internal bleeding. Significant long-term complications involve persistent bowel habit changes, adhesions, or incisional hernias. Italian facilities like Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy mitigate these risks through specialized oncological surgery departments and advanced diagnostic screening protocols.

  • Anastomotic leak: Connection failure between bowel segments requires emergency intervention to prevent sepsis.
  • Bowel paralysis: Temporary ileus prevents waste passage, typically resolving within 3 to 5 days.
  • Venous thromboembolism: Potential blood clots in legs require mobilization and compression post-surgery.
  • Bowel dysfunction: Altered frequency or consistency often persists for several months after colon resection.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian surgical centers often achieve shorter hospital stays of 3 to 5 days compared to North American averages. Centers like Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy in Rome integrate extensive pre-operative screening. This thorough preparation helps identify nutritional deficiencies that might otherwise increase leak risks.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report that bathroom frequency increases significantly for months following surgery. Most survivors recommend stocking anti-diarrheal supplies and planning for a 6-week recovery period.

How long is hospital stay and full recovery after hemicolectomy in Italy?

Patients typically stay in Italian hospitals for 3 to 5 days following laparoscopic hemicolectomy. Open surgery requires 7 to 10 days of monitoring. Full functional recovery generally takes 8 to 12 weeks. Most patients return to light activities after 6 weeks.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 3 to 5 days for laparoscopic procedures. Open surgery takes 7 to 10 days.
  • Initial recovery: The first 2 weeks at home involve significant fatigue and restricted mobility.
  • Activity resumption: Desk work may resume at 4 weeks. Manual labor requires at least 8 weeks.
  • Full recovery: Digestive stabilization and normal energy levels usually return within 3 to 4 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian centers like Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy often prioritize longer monitoring. European protocols frequently extend stays compared to US clinics for better pain control. This 14,000-patient facility utilizes 206 beds to ensure patients meet all discharge criteria. Focus on hospitals with high bed counts to guarantee post-operative support.

Patient Consensus: Many feel the first 2 weeks at home are tougher than expected. Support is essential for 4 weeks due to lifting limits and bowel changes.

Is laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery commonly used for hemicolectomy in Italy?

Laparoscopic surgery is the primary standard for hemicolectomy in Italy. Large-scale national studies show over 82.1% of right hemicolectomy procedures are performed minimally invasively. Specialized Italian centers frequently utilize advanced intracorporeal anastomosis techniques. This approach is standard for early-stage colon cancer and benign conditions.

  • Laparoscopic adoption: Most major Italian hospitals perform 70% to 80% of hemicolectomies laparoscopically.
  • Intracorporeal technique: Specialized centers complete intestinal connections inside the body in 73.3% of cases.
  • Robotic growth: Robotic-assisted surgery now accounts for roughly 12% of hemicolectomies in specialized wards.
  • Success rates: JCI-accredited facilities report 85% to 90% success for early-stage tumor removals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While laparoscopy is standard, high-volume centers in Rome and Milan show superior outcomes. Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy in Rome treats 14,000 patients annually. They were specifically recognized for robotic surgery excellence. Larger facilities usually maintain lower conversion rates to open surgery. Some specialized regional centers now lead Southern Europe because of these high volumes.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that laparoscopy is considered the norm in Turin university hospitals. Many emphasize confirming that your surgeon performs at least 50 laparoscopic cases annually.

Which hospitals in Italy are most reputable for hemicolectomy?

Italy features globally recognized centers for hemicolectomy, including the top-ranked Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic and San Raffaele Hospital. These facilities specialize in robotic and laparoscopic colorectal surgery, often maintaining Joint Commission International accreditation and achieving high-volume surgical milestones that exceed European safety standards.

  • Agostino Gemelli Policlinic: Consistently ranked number 1 in Italy by Newsweek for multidisciplinary oncology care.
  • San Raffaele Hospital: High-volume center performing over 2,000 gastrointestinal surgeries annually with specialized units.
  • Humanitas Research Hospital: Holds Joint Commission International accreditation and very high clinical performance ratings.
  • Ospedale San Carlo: Distinguished by pioneering surgeons and 5-star patient ratings for complex colorectal procedures.
  • Santa Maria Croci: Offers 90% minimally invasive surgery rates, significantly reducing post-operative hospital recovery time.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While major research institutes like Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori lead in surgery volume, Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy stands out for its technological integration. They successfully combine a 90-year history with modern Da Vinci robotic systems. This balance of experience and tech often results in more personalized care compared to the largest public hubs.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend choosing centers in northern Italy or Rome that strictly follow Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols. These protocols can reduce your hospital stay from 10 days down to only 5 days.
