How Much Does Prostatectomy Cost in Thailand?

A prostatectomy in Thailand typically costs from $10,500 / ฿357,000 to $15,000 / ฿510,000. The final price depends on the surgical approach, hospital specialization, and any additional lymph node removal. Patients save approximately 57% compared to the United States, where the average cost is $30,000 / ฿1,020,000. Most Thai packages include surgical fees, 3 to 7 hospital nights, and basic pre-operative screenings.

  • Robotic da Vinci prostatectomy: $15,000 / ฿510,000 to $25,000 / ฿850,000 for the most advanced minimally invasive technique.
  • Laparoscopic prostatectomy: $8,000 / ฿272,000 to $12,000 / ฿408,000 using small incisions and a camera.
  • Transurethral resection: $4,000 / ฿136,000 to $7,000 / ฿238,000 for treating benign prostate enlargement (BPH).
  • Hospital tier: Premium JCI-accredited centers in Bangkok often charge 40% more than regional facilities.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing centers with high robotic volumes offers the best value for complex cases. Bumrungrad International Hospital is a global top-10 facility using AI and da Vinci systems. Expert surgeons like Dr. Kittinut Kijvikai specialize in both robotic and laparoscopic methods. While premium robotic packages can reach $32,500, they include comprehensive care in world-class facilities. This remains significantly cheaper than standard US surgical rates.

"I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital"
I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital. I don't think that there is a hospital in Asia which can compare with this one. From the doctors to the nurses and all other personell in this hospital ALL are competent, very polite and friendly - the only small criticism that I have is that unfortunately many don't speak English very well, that's a great shame.

Our Prostatectomy Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Prostatectomy, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Robotic da Vinci prostatectomy

This minimally invasive procedure uses robotic technology to remove the prostate gland, primarily for prostate cancer treatment.

Pros: Offers enhanced precision with less blood loss and reduced pain compared to traditional surgeries. Faster recovery time, with 90% of patients returning to normal activities within 2 weeks.
Cons: Requires specialized surgical expertise and can involve longer operation times than some alternatives. Limited availability in smaller healthcare facilities.
Effectiveness: 95% success rate in achieving cancer-free margins in early-stage prostate cancer.
Duration: 2-4 hours
Recovery: 2-4 weeks
Best for: Patients with localized prostate cancer seeking precise surgery with minimal downtime.
Prices: Cost of Robotic da Vinci prostatectomy in Thailand from $15,000

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)

This prostate surgery involves removing parts of the prostate gland to treat urinary problems due to an enlarged prostate.

Pros: Minimally invasive procedure with quicker recovery time compared to open surgeries. Effective for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia with a high success rate.
Cons: Risk of urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction post-surgery. Requires hospitalization for 1-2 days.
Effectiveness: 80-90% success rate in relieving urinary symptoms.
Duration: Approximately 1-2 hours.
Recovery: About 2-4 weeks.
Best for: Men with moderate to severe urinary issues caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Laparoscopic Prostatectomy

It is a minimally invasive procedure for removing the prostate gland, often used in prostate cancer treatment.

Pros: Less blood loss and quicker recovery than open surgery. Hospital stay is reduced to 1-2 days for most patients.
Cons: Requires specialized surgeon skills, which may not be available everywhere. Longer operation time compared to TURP.
Effectiveness: Success rate is above 90% for localized prostate cancer removal.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Recovery: 2-4 weeks
Best for: Localized prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia in patients seeking minimally invasive options.

FAQ about Prostatectomy in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Verify a Thai urologist by checking their license status with the Medical Council of Thailand. Confirm hospital quality by looking for Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. Top-tier centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Pattaya maintain multiple international certifications to ensure patient safety.

  • Medical Council: Request the surgeon’s license number to verify active standing via the Council’s database.
  • Hospital accreditation: Prioritize facilities with JCI, Global Healthcare Accreditation, or ISO 9001 certifications.
  • Clinical experience: Confirm the surgeon’s annual prostatectomy volume directly with the hospital’s international department.
  • Board certification: Look for a Diploma from the Thai Board of Urology or international fellowships.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume clinics like Bumrungrad serve 1,000,000 patients annually, creating a massive data pool for safety. Our data shows these JCI-accredited hubs often employ surgeons with dual certifications. Dr. Suebpong Angchoun, for example, holds boards in both General Surgery and Urology.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend contacting the hospital’s International Patient Services for written credential copies. They warn that English fluency in marketing materials does not always reflect a surgeon’s technical skill.

Prostatectomy in Thailand utilizes advanced robotic-assisted, laparoscopic, and endoscopic techniques within Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facilities. Surgeons primarily employ the da Vinci robotic system and 3D digital imaging to ensure high precision, nerve-sparing outcomes, and minimal blood loss for international patients.

  • Surgical techniques: Options include robotic da Vinci, laparoscopic, and transurethral resection (TURP) methods.
  • Safety accreditations: Top centers maintain JCI, ISO, and Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) standards.
  • Specialized expertise: Surgeons like Dr. Kittinut Kijvikai specialize in neoadjuvant androgen deprivation therapy.
  • Follow-up protocols: Standardized 6-week and 3-month monitoring schedules are available at major hospitals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Thai clinics offer urology, robotic technology is concentrated in Bangkok. Bumrungrad International Hospital serves 50% international patients and houses the most advanced AI-integrated robots. Choosing these high-volume centers ensures access to surgeons who perform hundreds of robotic cases annually.

Patient Consensus: Patients advise verifying Thai Medical Council credentials and prioritizing JCI-accredited hospitals. Many recommend arranging local PSA monitoring and pelvic floor therapy before returning home for recovery.

Patients undergoing prostatectomy in Thailand typically experience hospital discharge 24 to 48 hours after robotic-assisted surgery. Post-operative care includes catheter management for 7 to 10 days and a structured follow-up schedule starting with a PSA test at 2 weeks to monitor surgical success.

  • Hospital discharge: Most patients transition from clinical care within 1 to 2 days post-surgery.
  • Catheter removal: Surgeons usually schedule removal 7 to 10 days after the procedure.
  • Activity restrictions: Patients must avoid lifting over 5 kilograms for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Follow-up milestones: Standard PSA screenings occur at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital leverage high international patient volumes to streamline remote recovery. Many surgeons use responsive apps like WhatsApp for virtual check-ins. This digital connectivity allows patients to fly home sooner while maintaining expert oversight. You can often coordinate local bloodwork to avoid returning to Bangkok for every milestone.

Patient Consensus: Many patients suggest staying in-country until the catheter is removed to ensure maximum comfort during the flight home. Expect some manageable bladder spasms in the first week, which clinics typically address with specialized medication at discharge.

Plan for a 14 to 21 day stay in Thailand for a low-complexity robotic prostatectomy. This timeframe covers pre-operative screenings, 1 to 2 nights of hospitalization, and at least 10 days of local recovery before clearing the high-altitude flight risk.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 1–2 nights at facilities like JCI-accredited Bumrungrad International Hospital.
  • Catheter duration: Post-operative catheter removal typically occurs 7–14 days after your robotic surgery.
  • Flight safety: Thai surgeons advise against flying for 10 days to prevent deep vein thrombosis.
  • Recovery window: Budget 18 total days if stable PSA levels and zero bleeding are required.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While robotic surgery reduces trauma, top Thai centers like Bangkok Hospital Pattaya prioritize long-term continence. Data shows that `low-complexity` patients staying 14+ days have better outcomes. This extra time allows for professional catheter management, which prevents the infections often seen in early travelers.

Patient Consensus: Former patients emphasize booking an extended-stay apartment near the clinic. They warn that rushing home before day 10 can lead to complications with urinary leaks or mobility.

Post-operative side effects of prostatectomy in Thailand include temporary urinary incontinence for 3–12 months and erectile dysfunction. Local JCI-accredited clinics manage these via immediate pelvic floor rehabilitation, nerve-sparing robotic techniques, and guided penile recovery protocols to ensure safe international travel after 14 days.

  • Recovery timeline: Patients typically remain hospitalized for 1–3 days after the procedure.
  • Incontinence management: Clinics provide early Kegel programs and biofeedback therapy for 500 THB.
  • Catheter care: The urinary catheter remains for 7–14 days to ensure proper healing.
  • Function recovery: Surgeons often prescribe low-dose daily medication for penile rehabilitation from day 1.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital utilize 3D robotic imaging to enhance nerve preservation. Experts recommend staying in Bangkok for 14 days post-surgery. This allows for professional catheter removal and immediate access to specialized pelvic physical therapy before your flight.

Patient Consensus: Most patients find that early access to affordable pelvic floor sessions helps manage stress incontinence. They also highlight that recovery medications are easily accessible and significantly cheaper than in the US.

To qualify for a prostatectomy in Thailand, you must provide a recent PSA test, biopsy reports with Gleason scores, and MRI or ultrasound imaging. Carrying digital copies on a USB or CD is essential to avoid delays in surgical planning at JCI-accredited centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital.

  • Pathology reports: Provide original biopsy results including Gleason scores for cancer staging.
  • Imaging data: Carry MRI or ultrasound scans on a CD or USB drive.
  • Laboratory tests: Include PSA results and kidney function tests from the last 6 months.
  • Medication list: Bring a certified English list of current prescriptions and pharmacy records.
  • Financial proof: Prepare travel insurance documents or proof of payment for hospital admission.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai hospitals like Bangkok Hospital Pattaya often require patients to upload documents to a secure portal 48 hours before arrival. Submitting your pathology reports early allows the tumor board to pre-approve your robotic da Vinci surgery, potentially saving you 3 to 4 days of diagnostic waiting time in Bangkok.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that bringing original digital imaging rather than printed copies is vital. They also suggest having all medical history translated into English to ensure the surgical team can finalize the schedule immediately upon your first consultation.

Bangkok remains the premier destination for prostate surgery in Thailand, housing the highest density of JCI-accredited hospitals and robotic surgeons. Facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital lead the region in complex cases, utilizing advanced da Vinci systems for nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomies and specialized oncological care.

  • Regional expertise: Bangkok offers significantly higher specialist depth than resort areas like Phuket.
  • Hospital rankings: Bumrungrad is a Newsweek-ranked top global facility with 70 specialized departments.
  • Surgeon volume: Leading Bangkok surgeons typically report over 1,000 successful prostatectomy cases.
  • Advanced technology: Robotic-assisted systems and AI-guided imaging are standard in major Bangkok centers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a massive experience gap between capital city hubs and coastal clinics. While Phuket is great for minor urology, Bangkok hospitals like Bumrungrad handle nearly 1 million patients annually. This high volume translates to surgeons who perform specific robotic procedures daily rather than weekly. For a life-altering surgery like a prostatectomy, the technical proficiency found in Bangkok centers significantly reduces long-term side effects.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing Bangkok for oncology to avoid limited specialist depth found in smaller resort hospitals. Many recommend staying 7–10 days post-operation in the city to ensure safe follow-up care before flying home.
