Vienna General Hospital (AKH): more details about the clinic

Austria, Vienna

Vienna General Hospital (Allgemeines Krankenhaus, AKH Wien) is the university hospital of the Medical University of Vienna, located in Vienna, Austria. Founded by Emperor Joseph II in 1784 and rebuilt as a modern medical campus opened in 1994, it is run by the City of Vienna and treats patients of every kind, from routine care to the most complex and rare conditions that other hospitals refer here.

A Medical City

Often described as "a city within a city", the AKH campus houses 29 university clinics, 35 clinical departments and hundreds of specialised outpatient clinics under one roof, along with its own laboratories, pharmacy, shops and restaurants. It has 1,691 beds, including large intensive care and intermediate care units, and 56 operating theatres. Around 1,600 doctors and 2,700 nursing staff work here, treating around 630,000 patients each year. Because the hospital and the Medical University of Vienna share the same campus and staff, patients are treated by doctors who are also researchers and university professors in their field.

Cancer Care

Together with the Medical University of Vienna, the AKH runs the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) Vienna, which brings every cancer specialty together and treats tumours of all types, including rare and advanced cancers. Diagnosis, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapies are coordinated in interdisciplinary tumour boards, and patients can access new treatments through clinical trials that are often not available elsewhere.

Complex Surgery and Transplantation

The AKH is a national referral centre for complex and high-risk surgery across neurosurgery, cardiac and vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, abdominal and cancer surgery, orthopaedics and transplantation. It performs kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas and bone-marrow transplants, and its lung transplant programme performs approximately 100 transplants annually.

Research and Innovation

As a university hospital, the AKH combines patient care with medical research and teaching. Many diagnostic and treatment methods used worldwide today were developed here, and its close link to the Medical University of Vienna means patients benefit from the latest scientific advances. A new Center for Translational Medicine on the campus further strengthens the path from laboratory research to patient treatment.

Recognition

The AKH is a member of the European University Hospital Alliance, a network of university hospitals in Europe focused on highly specialised medicine and research. Its guiding words, taken from its foundation in 1784, are "Saluti et solatio aegrorum" — for the healing and comfort of the sick.

International Patients

The hospital treats patients from Austria and abroad, with an information centre to help with enquiries and orientation on the large campus.

Dr

Hello. I just wanted to mention some of the things that happened, so that your team is in the loop of what your customers are going through. I was contacted by Dr. Sadeq, which was very pleasant to communicate with. Roman on the other hand, was not clear about anything from the beginning. Saying “don’t worry, it is okay.” After confirming the doctors, and sending all my medical files 2 weeks ahead of time, I came to realise that the doctors have no idea about my condition. I walked in to a confused doctor, not even knowing that I have heart failure. I saw this as quite unprofessional that they haven’t even had time to review my documents. Once the doctor asked for my files, Roman did not have them, and I was forced to give a brief summary of what happened. This made me feel that my case was of no interest or importance to the representative. After finally managing to see the surgeon, he said that was the only day he was available (March 2nd), and that he was flying for work elsewhere. He had asked me to come back on the 16th of March. I could not believe that, as I have paid for tickets, plus hotels for two people (my mother joining) for 10 days in Vienna, when the doctor is not even there to do the surgery I was supposed to do. Do you know what the costs are of this mishap? After that, we ended up seeing another cardiologist recommended by the cardio surgeon. He was great, but when we came back the next day for ROman’s set appointment, it turns out there was no appointment, and he “had to go” and left me to deal with the hospital. The communication with Roman was horrible. I was just waiting in the lobby for 3 days not knowing what will happen, what are the fees, and no warnings or consultations. Especially when an x-ray costs 2,500 euros, I would have appreciated an initial warning of the costs. Not just “come pay” style that he has. That is as much as the biopsy, which I will still have to do in the future. I have experience with companies like yours, but the unprofessionalism, lack of communication, and unorganisation is unprecedented. I am going out of my way just to clarify what my experience was with your team, with handling things. The hospital and doctors were great. It was just the missteps by Roman that was upsetting.
About Bookimed service
I was not happy with Roman, the representative in Vienna due to many reasons. I have passed on my experience to Varvara.

I liked the doctor

I didn’t like the moment that we were eventually recorded to another doctor. I liked the doctor, but we did not have an examination, that is, only a consultation, in general I did not get exactly what I wanted. Lor did not like it at all, did not receive any new information from him, was not happy with the translator, most of what we said he did not know and did not translate

"Short but encouraging and 'productive' I would say

My hospital stay was short, my appointment with the doctor lasted for 15 minutes. He carefully listened to all I had to say, previous diagnosis I had, stated his recommendation and additionally prescribed me another drug. I have to do a follow up after I finish my medication and return for his opinion regarding my state of health. Short but encouraging and 'productive' I would say. However, I have the feeling we should have discuss more about side effects of the drugs and alternatives if they do not have the desired effect for me.
About Bookimed service
I am fully satisfied, I got instant help for may medical stay in Vienna. All details were clearly discussed from the start and what I was informed that will happen was totally confirmed. Sorry it took me so long to respond to your questionnaire. Congratulations to this professional team!

The results were very satisfactory

We are happy with the visit, I would like to elaborate on the cost of procedures and treatment for each position, sometimes I need help with parsing the procedure (this is a little inconvenient)
