The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment
With the organization of medical services, everything went clearly according to the previous plan. Tatyana, the representative of the company, is very communicative, explains everything, no complaints, even came at 7.30 for the procedure, although there was no translation. I made a slight remark, the price for some services was not announced to me , but in fact it was added... These side effects must also be voiced before the trip...... The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment.....

I am writing a review for those people who are in the same difficult situation as our family. Just want to warn, think before you go here. They did not help us ... Moreover, now we understand that they simply did not tell us the truth, promised treatment that everything would be fine and we believed in it, sincerely! They didn’t save on treatment, did everything they recommended, but they just cheerlessly pumped chemistry and prescribed unnecessary consultations like a physiotherapist with charging a hopelessly sick person !!! The company "phoenix" is a soulless creature with the function of receiving money, I don’t even know how to call them anymore ... Doctor Professor Eger also smiled on detours and said that everything would be fine and didn’t even tell the family that the situation was getting worse, she appointed procedures ... As we now understand, everything was clear for a long time, we just wanted to be "treated" because we paid. They tortured our daddy heartlessly and cynically for money !!! Curator Stoyanova stopped responding to letters and the phone immediately, as soon as they informed her that the patient no longer exists. NO ONE! neither she, nor "phoenix", nor the clinic, they even expressed condolences ... It hurts to realize that nothing human is left in people ... We scolded our Russian doctors, and they just told us the truth right away

Not good. The people that I had appointments with did not show up. I met with others who seemed to doubt my records and then claimed that my medical imaging showed no problems whatsoever. I returned home and now seem to have pneumonia in the top of my lungs around the vertebra that are known to have lesions (T1,T2,T3). I consider your service to be a fraud.

My husband and I are very pleased that we made an appointment with Professor Elka Yeager. The examination was carried out on all areas of the body that interest us, and a chemotherapy course was prescribed based on the results of the examination. The first session was held in a hospital clinic. The host company worked very professionally, with great attention to patients. Many thanks to all and best wishes from us!

"I'm very pleased with the treatment
My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense.

I requested a second opinion for the treatment of prostate cancer for my dad. The cosultation was provided in written by Prof. Dr. med. Sebastian Melchior. He answered all my initial questions and the ones I've sent after his initial answers in meter of few days. This helped us in understanding better the situation and possible options. However due to the fact that most of the answers were of general rather specific nature, in the end we are still not sure what is the better treatment in our case.

"The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person!" Return: About the Doctor: "We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr
My mother was diagnosed in Russia with a terrible diagnosis - breast cancer stage 4. The doctors' actions were not credible, so we turned to Bookimed for the selection of a clinic and a doctor. We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr. Ursula Makowiec. Mom passed a 3-day examination in the hospital, in a separate ward. Friendly atmosphere, professionalism, respect for the elderly patient - all this allowed us to relax, not to try to control every step of the medical staff, to read the articles on the Internet. I was sure that we made the right choice. And most importantly - the diagnosis was not confirmed! My mother was not breast cancer with metastases, but a sweat cancer in the armpit without any signs of metastases, the prognosis is much more favorable. The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person! We plan to be observed further in this clinic with this doctor. I would also like to thank the translator Marina Wernke. She was not only an excellent professional, but also a very pleasant conversationalist, we were very comfortable with her. I also want to thank the curators who helped a lot all the time while mom was in the clinic.

Everything is clear and reasonable
Immediately I will note not the intrusive and at the same time "essentially" made by Alena presentation of the clinic. And really everything turned out to be as they described to me: the doctor explained how he sees my situation, what kind of opinion of Moscow doctors he agrees with, and what does not and what he proposes to do. Hello! My dad was diagnosed with a diagnosis in the clinic: adenomatic stomach carcinoma of the 3rd stage. Doctors, nurses and accompanying personnel are qualified professionals, very attentive! All procedures are made as necessary, and not for profit. The only thing that is embarrassing is the menu for people without a stomach. (They gave it hot and fried) Accompanying company takes you from the airport on the day of arrival to the airport on the day of departure. In general, from the time of the first call to today, everyone is happy! I advise everyone here to contact!

FAQ about Proton-beam therapy in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is proton-beam therapy and how does it work?

Proton-beam therapy is a precise radiation treatment using positively charged protons to destroy cancer cells. Unlike standard X-rays, protons release maximum energy exactly at the tumor site and stop. This minimizes radiation exposure to surrounding vital organs like the brain, spine, or heart.

  • Energy release: The Bragg peak allows protons to release heavy radiation only at target depth.
  • Zero exit dose: Protons stop within the tumor, leaving healthy tissue behind it untouched.
  • Treatment geometry: A rotating gantry delivers beams from 360-degree angles for extreme accuracy.
  • Pencil beam scanning: Modern magnets paint radiation layer-by-layer across the 3D shape of tumors.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Germany holds a unique position with some of Europe's highest patient volumes, such as Essen University Hospital serving 370,000 patients annually. This massive scale allows German centers to offer hyper-specialized proton therapy for rare pediatric cancers and complex eye melanomas. While the technology is similar globally, the clinical trial integration at these high-volume centers often provides access to the latest delivery protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients value how this treatment protects sensitive areas like the brain or spinal cord. Most emphasize that while the sessions are painless, the preparation requires significant time for planning scans and fitting custom immobilization masks.

Which types of cancer benefit the most from proton therapy in Germany?

Proton therapy in Germany provides the greatest clinical advantage for pediatric cancers, skull-base tumors, and tumors near critical organs like the brainstem or optic nerves. Facilities like Essen University Hospital utilize the Bragg Peak effect to stop radiation precisely within the tumor, sparing sensitive surrounding healthy tissues.

  • Pediatric cancers: Reduces long-term developmental delays and secondary cancer risks for growing children.
  • Skull-base tumors: Treats chordomas and chondrosarcomas while sparing the vital brainstem and nerves.
  • Ocular tumors: Eradicates uveal melanomas while preserving vision and saving the optic nerve.
  • Moving organs: Advanced motion-mitigation technology protects the heart during left-sided breast cancer treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German oncology leaders like Essen University Hospital serve over 370,000 patients annually by integrating research directly into care. Our data shows patients prioritize these centers not just for technology, but for their specific expertise in re-irradiation, where protons safely treat areas previously exposed to radiation.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that the tumor's location matters more than the cancer type, especially when it sits near structures for vision or swallowing. Many advise comparing proton plans against modern IMRT to confirm a clear dose-sparing advantage before starting treatment.

What are the primary side effects?

Primary side effects of proton-beam therapy involve localized fatigue and skin irritation at the entry point. Because protons release energy at a precise depth, healthy tissue exposure is reduced compared to traditional radiation. Symptoms vary significantly based on the specific tumor target area.

  • Systemic fatigue: Most patients report tiredness building up over several weeks of treatment.
  • Skin reactions: Treated areas may experience redness, dryness, itching, or temporary hair loss.
  • Organ-specific effects: Pelvic treatment can cause urinary urgency or bowel looseness during therapy.
  • Head and neck: Patients often face dry mouth, taste changes, or mild swallowing discomfort.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While proton therapy reduces surrounding tissue damage, clinics like Essen University Hospital suggest strict hydration and bladder routines. These preparations are vital for pelvic cases to ensure the beam hits the exact target daily. Managing these small factors often determines how well patients tolerate the cumulative radiation dose.

Patient Consensus: Many feel the procedure is painless during delivery but note that fatigue hits harder in the final weeks. Patients emphasize that skin irritation is often milder than standard radiation but still requires gentle care.

What are the leading German hospitals for proton-beam therapy?

Germany leads European proton-beam therapy with advanced facilities like University Hospital Essen (WPE) and University Hospital Heidelberg (HIT). These centers utilize pencil beam scanning and dual-particle therapy to treat complex tumors in pediatric and adult patients with precision.

  • Essen University Hospital: Operates 4 gantries and specializes in pediatric, brain, and prostate cancers.
  • University Hospital Heidelberg: Pioneer center offering both protons and heavy carbon ion therapy.
  • OncoRay Dresden: Expert hub for head and neck tumors and innovative clinical trials.
  • Bremen-Mitte Clinic: Focus-ranked hospital providing multidisciplinary diagnostics for thoracic and breast oncology.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Heidelberg and Essen dominate volume, Essen University Hospital is a standout for technology integration. It consistently earns Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals honors for its use of AI and digital imaging. This technical edge often translates to faster treatment planning for complex soft tissue sarcomas.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing a facility based on its specific experience with your tumor type. Many recommend confirming the availability of English-speaking coordinators and checking housing logistics early in the process.

How long does a treatment course last and is it painful?

Proton-beam therapy in Germany typically requires 4 to 8 weeks, with sessions delivered daily. The radiation beam itself is painless and invisible during the minutes of delivery. Most discomfort stems from rigid positioning requirements or cumulative fatigue as the multi-week treatment course progresses.

  • Treatment duration: Sessions occur 5 days per week for up to 8 weeks total.
  • Session timing: Beam delivery lasts minutes, but positioning and imaging take 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Pain experience: The procedure is non-invasive and patients feel no heat or immediate pain.
  • Side effects: Patients may experience site-specific irritation or fatigue as treatments accumulate over time.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the technology is painless, the logistical burden in Germany is the real challenge. Leading centers like Essen University Hospital see 370,000 patients annually, making scheduling highly precise. Patients should secure local lodging early, as daily travel for 2 months often proves more exhausting than the medical sessions themselves.

Patient Consensus: Many find the routine becomes boringly repetitive after the first week. Those treated for head, neck, or pelvic cancers mention that immobilization masks or specific positioning cause more daily stress than the radiation beam.

How many proton therapy centers operate in Germany?

Germany currently operates 5 active proton therapy centers. These highly specialized facilities are located in Essen, Heidelberg, Marburg, Dresden, and Berlin. They provide advanced radiation treatment using proton beams or carbon ions to target tumors with millimeter precision while protecting healthy tissue.

  • Essen University Hospital: Operates the West German Proton Therapy Center, the largest German facility.
  • Heidelberg University Hospital: Features the Ion-Beam Therapy Center providing both proton and carbon ions.
  • Marburg facility: Serves as a major particle therapy center collaborating with regional clinics.
  • Dresden facility: Operates as a leading university-backed research and clinical treatment center.
  • Berlin facility: Specializes primarily in proton treatment for ocular or eye tumors.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While 5 centers are active, patient volume at Essen University Hospital reaches 370,000 annually. This high concentration of expertise in university-linked clinics suggests that securing a spot often requires earlier coordination than at private oncology centers. Most facilities specialize in specific cases rather than general oncology.

Patient Consensus: Access is often limited to major cities, frequently requiring patients to travel long distances. Recent feedback highlights that the treatment decision depends heavily on early insurance approval and specific referral pathways.
