Verified review.
The person who was given the appointment was given the wrong one and I traveled 5 hours because of this mistake and paid 157 euros and I was not examined medically because the appointment was given the wrong one and they told me that I should have 5 more days to request a refund I actually made the request and I haven't received the money back yet. It was a very bad experience and I hope it doesn't happen again.
Unfortunately, I did not like anything. They were negligent in everything. They did not have time to inquire. They talked to you with an upset face
My appointment was not scheduled correctly because of the person I made the appointment with.

Our Acne Scar Treatment Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Acne Scar Treatment, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Acne Laser Treatment (per session)

Utilizes laser technology to target and reduce acne scars effectively.

Pros: Offers up to 70% improvement in scar appearance. Faster results compared to medication therapy or IPL treatments.
Cons: Potential for temporary redness and swelling. Requires multiple sessions for optimal results.
Effectiveness: 70% scar reduction after multiple sessions.
Duration: 30-60 minutes
Recovery: 5-7 days
Best for: Reducing acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and improving skin texture.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Skin Treatment

An advanced dermatology procedure using broad-spectrum light to treat skin issues like acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and aging signs.

Pros: Non-invasive with minimal downtime. Improves skin texture and tone by 70% after multiple sessions. Unlike laser therapy, it treats larger areas quickly.
Cons: May require multiple sessions for optimal results. Not suitable for darker skin tones due to risk of hyperpigmentation.
Effectiveness: Up to 80% improvement in skin appearance after 4-6 sessions.
Duration: 30-60 minutes
Recovery: 1-2 days
Best for: Acne scars, sun damage, age spots, rosacea. Suitable for light to medium skin tones.

Medication Therapy for Acne

Uses prescription medications to treat acne by reducing inflammation and bacteria.

Pros: Effective for mild to moderate acne. Oral antibiotics can reduce acne lesions by up to 70% in 3 months. Less invasive than laser or IPL treatments.
Cons: Potential side effects like dryness and irritation. Requires long-term use, typically 3-6 months for visible results.
Effectiveness: Reduces acne by 50-70% in 3-6 months.
Duration: Daily regimen
Recovery: Not needed
Best for: Mild to moderate acne, inflammatory acne, and reducing bacterial growth.

FAQ about Acne Scar Treatment in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which treatments are most commonly used for acne scars in Italy?

Acne scar treatment in Italy focuses on combination therapies involving CO2 fractional lasers, subcision, and microneedling. Italian dermatologists frequently pair these with chemical peels and temporary fillers. These procedures are most concentrated in Milan and Rome, ensuring access to IRCCS-accredited research hospitals and board-certified surgeons.

  • Laser therapy: Fractional CO2 lasers create microscopic channels to stimulate deep collagen production.
  • Subcision technique: Surgeons release tethered rolling scars manually before starting laser or filler cycles.
  • Microneedling RF: Radiofrequency energy penetrates deep skin layers, often used for long-term maintenance.
  • Chemical peels: Salicylic or glycolic acids provide superficial exfoliation and prep skin for lasers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian clinics like San Raffaele emphasize a structured clinical approach over quick fixes. Data suggests a preference for sequencing treatments, such as performing subcision before any laser work. This multi-modality strategy often involves 6 to 12 months of repeated appointments for optimal results.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the expertise of surgeons like Dr. Domenico Riitano, who has performed over 10,000 operations. Many recommend requesting recent before and after photos to verify a specialist's skill with specific scar types.

Do red post-acne marks need a different plan from indented or raised scars?

Red post-acne marks, known as post-inflammatory erythema, require vascular-specific treatments different from the structural repairs needed for indented or raised scars. Use vascular lasers or tropical anti-inflammatories for red marks. Address indented or raised scars through collagen-remodeling techniques like subcision or laser resurfacing.

  • Treatment focus: Red marks require blood vessel constriction, while indented scars need collagen stimulation.
  • Technology mismatch: Pulsed dye lasers target red pigment; fractional lasers physically resurface textured indentations.
  • Timeline differences: Red marks often resolve within 18 months, whereas structural scars are permanent.
  • Topical efficacy: Anti-inflammatories work for redness but cannot fill deep atrophic boxcar or icepick scars.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While patients often seek expensive lasers first, high-volume centers like San Raffaele in Milan emphasize research-backed diagnostics. Data shows that red light therapy and IPL, starting at $300, are highly cost-effective for active redness. This is significantly more affordable than the $1,400 starting point for intensive scar resurfacing.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize getting a professional classification first because aggressive lasers can worsen red marks on certain skin types. Many found that specific lasers like PDL can flatten and decolor red hypertrophic scars in just 2 sessions.

What are the top hospitals and clinics for treating acne scars in Italy?

Top Italian medical centers for acne scar treatment include San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and Istituto Dermopatico dell'Immacolata in Rome. These facilities utilize advanced CO2 fractional lasers, Morpheus8 radiofrequency technology, and regenerative stem cell therapies to effectively remodel skin texture and reduce deep atrophic scarring.

  • San Raffaele Hospital: IRCCS-accredited research center in Milan performing over 52,000 annual operations.
  • Specialized technology: Medicalia center in Rome utilizes confocal laser microscopy for precise skin remodeling.
  • Expert surgeons: Dr. Domenico Riitano in Rome performs advanced reconstructive and aesthetic procedures.
  • Combined protocols: Clinics often integrate microneedling, TCA peels, and light therapy for better results.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian dermatology centers often prioritize surgical precision over high-volume laser clinics. San Raffaele serves 300,000 patients yearly, yet maintains elite research status. Choosing a multidisciplinary hospital like this ensures access to advanced regenerative medicine, which is often more effective for complex scarring than standard laser-only clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the affordable medical-grade chemical peels and microneedling in Italy compared to neighboring countries. Many recommend confirming the availability of specific fractional lasers upfront, as some boutique clinics may have limited equipment options.
