Verified review.
The person who was given the appointment was given the wrong one and I traveled 5 hours because of this mistake and paid 157 euros and I was not examined medically because the appointment was given the wrong one and they told me that I should have 5 more days to request a refund I actually made the request and I haven't received the money back yet. It was a very bad experience and I hope it doesn't happen again.
Unfortunately, I did not like anything. They were negligent in everything. They did not have time to inquire. They talked to you with an upset face
My appointment was not scheduled correctly because of the person I made the appointment with.

FAQ about Birthmark removal in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is birthmark removal covered by Italian health insurance?

Italian national health insurance covers birthmark removal only when the procedure is medically necessary. This includes lesions posing cancer risks or vascular marks impairing vision or breathing. Purely aesthetic removals are excluded from public coverage, requiring patients to pay between $2,200 and $4,000 at private clinics.

  • Medical necessity: SSN covers removals for precancerous lesions or functional impairments like obstructed sight.
  • Cosmetic exclusion: Aesthetic treatments are essentially denied public funding and require out-of-pocket payment.
  • Wait times: Public hospital wait lists for approved cases typically range from 6 to 12 months.
  • Private costs: Private laser sessions in Italy generally start at approximately $590 per treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Approval rates for public coverage remain low, with roughly 80% of requests dismissed as cosmetic. To improve your chances, secure a dermatologist biopsy classifying the lesion as suspicious or pathological. Clinics like San Raffaele in Milan combine research with clinical care, making them better equipped for complex medical-necessity documentation.

Patient Consensus: Patients often report that public coverage is difficult to obtain for non-life-threatening marks. many choose private clinics to avoid the year-long wait times found in the national system.

What removal techniques are commonly used in Italy?

Birthmark removal in Italy utilizes advanced laser technologies including Q-switched Nd:YAG, Alexandrite, and Picosecond PicoWay. Specialist clinics in Milan also employ pulsed dye laser (PDL) for vascular lesions. These methods are often complemented by surgical excision or electrosurgery for complex, raised, or deeper birthmarks.

  • Vascular laser: Pulsed dye laser (PDL) treats port-wine stains by targeting blood vessels.
  • Pigmented laser: PicoWay and Alexandrite lasers break down melanin in café-au-lait spots.
  • Surgical removal: Full excision or shave removal eliminates large, raised, or textured birthmarks.
  • Electrosurgery: High-frequency currents remove small raised marks with minimal recovery time.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian medical hubs like Milan distinguish themselves through specialized pediatric care. Elite research hospitals like San Raffaele handle over 300,000 patients annually. They often combine pulsed dye laser with propranolol therapy for infants. This integrated approach improves clearance rates for complex vascular birthmarks compared to laser treatment alone.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of a test patch before full laser sessions. This prevents hypopigmentation, which is a particular concern for those with darker skin tones.

What is the expected recovery time after laser or surgical removal?

Recovery after birthmark removal in Italy typically spans 7 to 14 days for initial healing. Laser treatments offer faster recovery with minimal downtime while surgical excision requires 1 to 3 weeks for surface wounds to close. Professional care in Milan centers ensures specialized wound management.

  • Laser healing: Non-ablative laser redness subsides within 3 days after treatment.
  • Ablative recovery: CO2 lasers require 7 to 14 days for skin peeling.
  • Surgical downtime: Stitches are typically removed 5 to 14 days post-procedure.
  • Activity limits: Patients must avoid strenuous exercise for 2 weeks after surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While local clinics offer laser removal, large Italian centers like San Raffaele specialize in complex removals. These hospitals perform over 52,000 annual operations and favor multidisciplinary approaches. Choosing a facility with IRCCS accreditation ensures the latest surgical protocols for faster tissue remodeling.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the rapid return to daily work after laser sessions. Many report that following strict sun protection protocols is the most critical part of long-term healing.

Which clinics are most reputable for birthmark removal in Italy?

Reputable birthmark removal in Italy centers in Milan and Rome, featuring world-class institutions like Ospedale San Raffaele and IRCCS Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio. These facilities combine advanced laser technology with research expertise. Specialists utilize Q-switched and picosecond lasers for high surgical success rates and aesthetic precision.

  • Research hospitals: Ospedale San Raffaele is a leading European institution for complex dermatology.
  • Surgical success: IRCCS Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio reports a 91% success rate for surgical procedures.
  • Specialized lasers: Medical aesthetic centers in Milan focus on diagnostic-grade laser皮 therapy.
  • Pediatric care: UPMC Salvator Mundi in Rome provides specialized dermatology for children.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan hospitals consistently rank among the world best for a reason. San Raffaele alone manages 300,000 patients annually. While small aesthetic shops are common, these large research centers provide safer outcomes for complex pigmentations. This volume ensures surgeons see rare cases more frequently than private clinics.

Patient Consensus: Many find Italian dermatology excellent but advise calling multiple clinics to confirm pricing. Some suggest prioritizing plastic surgeons over dermatologists for birthmarks in highly visible areas like the face.
