Drs seemed very good. The consultation was calm and professional but I was told I would have results within 2 working days. When I didn’t receive any information I returned to the hospital and was told I would be emailed within 24 hours. When that didn’t happen I had to come in again and was hugely surprised by a very rude and impatient receptionist who was dismissive and seemed to want to blame me somehow. She made some very unprofessional comments about me to colleagues in front of other patients when she thought I couldn’t hear. Other staff did their best to help afterwards but considering the money spent and my experience I would not recommend this place at all.

I went to the Galeazzi clinic. Milan. Italy. on my son's problem - gmgantism. Coordinators from Bookimed got involved. Had an online consultation. for which I paid 360 euros. All required documentation has been sent. references. analyses. x-rays. To determine the volume of the operation and the cost, they said that the patient needs to come to Milan. I'm from Ukraine. It's hard to describe how the journey cost me. with what difficulty. Upon arrival in Milan. we are consulted by another doctor and gives quite the opposite answer.!! Is it really impossible to agree and view all the documentation. y t. h and the video was sent!!! with immediately give a negative answer during an online consultation. why do it at all then? It's just a waste of money. not problem solving. Be careful!

"A trip to the clinic was done by Yana
Hello, I have serious scoliosis and some other health problems, it is necessary to operate scoliosis and preferably as soon as possible since it will only get worse ... In Ukraine, everyone refused to operate because there was a very big risk, Poland also refused ... Then I My coordinator Pavel Popkov wrote to Bookimed just a great person, he answers any questions even to stupid ones, he sent my documents to different clinics and finally the Galeazzi clinic was told to come for a detailed consultation ... The consultation was successful, everything seems to be going positive, waiting for a final decision from them! A trip to the clinic was done by Yana. She got us free tickets for a special program.

FAQ about Endoscopic discectomy in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How successful is endoscopic discectomy in Italy and how quickly do patients recover?

Endoscopic discectomy in Italy achieves success rates between 85% and 95%, with specialized centers like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio reporting 91% efficacy. Patients recover rapidly, often walking within hours and returning to light activities or sedentary work within 7 to 14 days.

  • Success rates: Clinical data shows 83.7% to 93% of patients achieve good to excellent results.
  • Hospital stay: Most patients undergo same-day discharge or stay for 1 night only.
  • Return to work: Desk-based roles are resumed in 1–2 weeks; physical labor requires 4–6 weeks.
  • Physical activity: Patients typically resume exercise like stationary cycling or elliptical use within 6 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian spine centers are pioneering advanced techniques like Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE) to treat complex herniations. Dr. François Lechanoine at Maria Cecilia Hospital even founded a dedicated UBE training center. Choosing a surgeon with this specific specialization is vital, as lead experts in Milan and Ravenna often have 1,600 to 2,500+ successful procedures.

Patient Consensus: Many patients describe the results as life-changing, with one reporting driving after 3 days. Most emphasize that leg pain resolves almost immediately, though inflammation may cause a 6-week adjustment period.

Which surgical approaches do Italian surgeons use for endoscopic discectomy?

Italian surgeons utilize three primary surgical approaches for endoscopic discectomy: transforaminal, interlaminar, and unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE). These techniques provide minimally invasive access to the lumbar spine, using specialized rigid endoscopes to remove herniated discs while preserving healthy bone and ligament structures.

  • Transforaminal approach: Surgeons access the disc through the foramen to treat lateral herniations.
  • Interlaminar approach: This technique addresses L5-S1 herniations where the iliac crest blocks other paths.
  • Unilateral biportal endoscopy: Advanced dual-portal method used by specialists like Dr. François Lechanoine for decompression.
  • Integrated technologies: Clinics utilize specialized systems including Karl Storz and Stryker endoscopic spine tools.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian spine surgery is shifting toward specialized training hubs rather than general practice. Maria Cecilia Hospital operates a dedicated Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE) training center. This indicates that patients can find concentrated expertise in newer, dual-portal techniques which offer greater surgical visibility compared to traditional single-port methods.

Patient Consensus: Success depends on the surgeon matching the approach to your specific disc location and nerve compression. Patients emphasize verifying that a surgeon has performed at least 50 endoscopic cases before booking.

Who are the most experienced endoscopic discectomy surgeons in Italy?

Italy features highly skilled endoscopic discectomy specialists centered in Milan and Bologna. Top neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons like Dr. Alessio Lovi and Dr. François Lechanoine utilize advanced techniques including Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy within JCI-accredited facilities to ensure high precision and minimal recovery times.

  • Dr. Alessio Lovi: Performed 1,100+ procedures at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio using specialized endoscopic scoliosis techniques.
  • Dr. François Lechanoine: Lead surgeon for 1,600+ cases at Maria Cecilia Hospital specializing in biportal endoscopy.
  • Dr. Ignazio Borghesi: Specialist with 31 years experience and 4,500+ surgeries using 4K 3D imaging.
  • Credential standards: Top surgeons hold European Diploma in Spine Treatment from the Spine Society of Europe.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Maria Cecilia Hospital stands out because it houses a dedicated surgical training center for Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy. This suggests their team stays ahead of technical curves. While many clinics offer standard endoscopy, this facility serves as an international hub where other doctors learn these specific minimally invasive methods.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize verifying exact annual case volumes and formal fellowship training. They often recommend cross-referencing surgeons with European Society for Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery member lists to ensure specialized expertise.

Which hospitals are considered best for endoscopic spine surgery in Italy?

Italy hosts world-class neurological centers specializing in endoscopic spine surgery, with IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio and Maria Cecilia Hospital leading in volume and technology. These facilities specialize in minimally invasive techniques like Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy, offering high success rates for herniated discs.

  • Advanced technique center: Maria Cecilia Hospital features a dedicated Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE) training center.
  • Specialized neurosurgeon: Dr. François Lechanoine has performed 2,500+ surgeries, specializing in advanced neuroendoscopy.
  • Certified excellence: Leading clinics hold JCI accreditation or Eurospine Center of Excellence designations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many general hospitals offer spine care, Maria Cecilia Hospital stands out by housing a specific UBE training center. This indicates a higher level of technical mastery. Surgeons here often serve as international tutors, suggesting they handle more complex endoscopic cases than standard regional centers.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize prioritizing surgeons with over 200 endoscopic cases over hospital prestige. Private options in Milan and Rome are preferred to avoid the 6-month public system wait times.

Where are the main centres for endoscopic discectomy located in Italy?

Key locations include IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio and Maria Cecilia Hospital, specializing in advanced unilateral biportal endoscopy techniques with high success rates.

Using a facility that trains other surgeons often ensures access to the latest minimally invasive protocols.
