"I declare with all responsibility that the San Rafael clinic in Milan is the best
The professionalism of the doctors, the newest equipment, the care of the clinic staff are among the best in Europe. The treatment and operations in Russia and Germany have been carried out, I declare with all responsibility that the San Rafael clinic in Milan is the best. After treating my father’s stomach cancer, I visited the neurologist and gastroenterologist and myself. Thank you so much to the coordinator, the doctors from the international department of the clinic. More in the world of such doctors. THANK YOU!

We received a remote consultation at the San Rafael Clinic, for us this format was not suitable, because the second opinion is for those who either confirm the diagnosis or ask for another alternative treatment, we were told that after the consultation, continue the same, although we were treated and there was no result, as a result, after a remote consultation, we were not assigned anything, plus all communication was extended for a couple of months, because the clinic’s response rate was very low. We could not get any concrete answer, so this consultation was useless for us.

"Just returned from there
Just returned from there. Everything was top notch, and doctors, and the organization of the stay. It took 2 days from the first call to the bookmarked to my arrival in Milan. The next morning, consult a doctor. All questions were solved almost instantly, the results of all analyzes and studies were ready the next day. And constantly in touch with the coordinator Catherine and care worker Alexander. In my trips to the clinic, I was accompanied by a super translator Yulya Sukhneva. Thanks to the clear and professional work of Julia, Kati and Alexander, my stay was very short, I saved money on the hotel. The hotel, by the way, was excellent, up to the clinic, 200 meters. Yes, and more, the prices for consultations and analyzes are quite comparable with those in Moscow. I spent much less money than I thought at first. Thank you all!

FAQ about Laparoscopic prostatectomy in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which hospitals in Italy are leaders in laparoscopic prostatectomy?

Italy excels in laparoscopic prostatectomy, with Milan and Rome serving as primary hubs. San Raffaele Research Hospital leads with three da Vinci robots. San Donato and Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy follow, offering high-volume expertise under surgeons with thousands of successful surgeries.

  • San Raffaele Milan: Professor Francesco Montorsi has completed over 8,000 urological surgeries personally.
  • San Donato Milan: Professor Luca Carmignani oversees urological oncology with 10,000 procedures performed.
  • San Carlo Rome: Specialized team has completed 4,500 minimally invasive urology cases annually.
  • Maria Cecilia Bologna: JCI-accredited facility using advanced laparoscopic techniques for complex oncological cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan centers show a unique concentration of high-volume surgeons like Dr. Carmignani. They often perform twice the annual procedures of general community surgeons. This volume gap is a critical indicator of lower complication rates in Italy. Regional leadership in Lombardy often ensures access to the newest robotic platforms first.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize finding surgeons who perform at least 50 procedures per year. Success in Northern Italy centers depends heavily on direct communication about individual case volumes.

How does standard laparoscopic prostatectomy differ from robotic-assisted surgery?

Standard laparoscopic prostatectomy uses rigid instruments and 2D vision, while robotic-assisted surgery utilizes the da Vinci system for 3D magnification. Robotic tools offer 7 degrees of freedom, mimicking human wrists for superior precision during nerve-sparing maneuvers and delicate urethral suturing compared to straight-stick laparoscopic tools.

  • Visual interface: Robotic systems provide 3D high-definition views versus standard 2D video monitors.
  • Instrument dexterity: Robotic wristed instruments outmaneuver rigid laparoscopic tools in tight pelvic spaces.
  • Motion control: Robotic technology filters out surgeon hand tremors for enhanced surgical steadiness.
  • Functional recovery: Robotic-assisted methods often lead to faster restoration of potency and urinary control.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While robotic technology is advanced, surgeon volume is the true quality marker in Italy. Professor Luca Carmignani at San Donato Hospital has performed over 10,000 surgeries. Data shows that functional outcomes like continence equalize once a surgeon surpasses 200 cases, regardless of the technology used.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that robotic surgery offers a significant edge in nerve-sparing precision. Many suggest prioritizing a surgeon's personal success rates over the specific equipment available at the clinic.

Who are Italy’s most experienced urologic surgeons for minimally invasive prostatectomy?

Italy features world-leading urologic surgeons specializing in robotic and laparoscopic prostatectomies. Top experts including Professor Francesco Montorsi in Milan and Dr. Alessandro Calarco in Rome lead prestigious institutions. These specialists utilize Da Vinci robotic systems and advanced nerve-sparing techniques to prioritize post-operative continence and potency.

  • Professor Francesco Montorsi: Milan-based pioneer with 34 years experience and 8,000 procedures completed.
  • Professor Luca Carmignani: San Donato Hospital head; performed over 10,000 urologic and oncologic surgeries.
  • Dr. Alessandro Calarco: Leads Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy unit with international surgical patents.
  • Professor Pierluigi Bove: Rome-based specialist focusing on robotic oncology and focal prostate therapies.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Surgeon volume is the most reliable predictor of success in Italy. Professor Luca Carmignani at San Donato has performed 10,000 operations. This level of experience significantly reduces the likelihood of post-surgical complications. Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy is also uniquely recognized by patients specifically for Da Vinci robotic excellence.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize verifying that your surgeon performs over 100 cases annually to ensure better outcomes. While public hospitals are highly efficient, many choose private clinics to reduce waiting times from months to weeks.

What is the typical hospital stay and recovery timeline after laparoscopic prostatectomy?

Patients typically stay in the hospital for 24 to 48 hours following laparoscopic prostatectomy in Italy. Most men return to routine activities within 4 to 8 weeks. Physical recovery focuses on managing the urinary catheter and gradually restoring bladder control through pelvic exercises.

  • Initial discharge: Most clinics release patients once they walk independently and manage oral fluids.
  • Catheter duration: A urinary catheter remains in place for 7 to 14 days post-surgery.
  • Activity restrictions: Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are restricted for at least 6 weeks.
  • Functional timeline: Full urinary continence and sexual function recovery usually take 3 to 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While a 1-day stay is common, high-volume centers like Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy often suggest 48 hours. This allows surgeons to monitor early healing before catheter-based home care begins. This extra day often leads to smoother transitions for international patients traveling to Rome.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find the first week focuses entirely on managing the catheter comfortably. They emphasize that gentle walking early on significantly helps reduce post-operative bloating and improves mood.
