How Much Does Hair transplant Cost in Republic of Korea?

Hair transplant in the Republic of Korea typically costs from $3,900 to $8,600. Pricing depends on the extraction technique, number of grafts, and clinic location, with Seoul being the main medical hub. Patients save approximately 50% compared to the US, where the average price is $12,500. Standard services include the procedure, local anesthesia, and initial post-operative care.

  • FUE hair transplant: $5,500 to $10,500 for the follicular unit extraction method.
  • No Shave Hair Transplant: $6,200 to $12,000 for procedures allowing patients to keep long hair.
  • FUT strip method: Generally costs 20-30% less than FUE due to the traditional extraction technique.
  • DHI technique: Often carries a premium for specialized tools but offers higher graft density.
  • Graft volume: Prices typically scale based on the 1,000 to 3,000 graft requirements.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialized center like MOAMAN Hair Transplant Clinic in Gangnam offers unique value. They focus exclusively on hair restoration and are accredited by ISHRS. While general plastic surgery clinics like VG Plastic Surgery or Wonjin offer transplants, specialized hubs often provide higher precision. Many clinics also offer 7-10% VAT refunds for international patients at the airport.

Hair transplant in Republic of Korea: Your Travel Plan

Day 1: Arrival in Republic of Korea
  • You will arrive at Incheon International Airport and proceed to your pre-arranged accommodation.
  • Rest and adjust to the time zone difference.
  • Prepare necessary documents for the clinic visit, including your passport for identification and potential tax refund purposes.
  • Ensure you have a local SIM card or international roaming for communication with the clinic.
Day 2: Initial Consultation and Pre-Operative Assessment
  • You need to visit the clinic for an in-person consultation with the specialist. Determine the suitable method for your hair transplant, whether FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) or FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation).
  • Undergo preoperative laboratory tests to ensure you are fit for surgery.
  • Discuss the expected results, potential risks, and post-operative care with the doctor.
  • Confirm the surgery date and pay any required deposit if not already done.
  • Receive instructions on pre-surgery preparations, including any dietary restrictions or medications to avoid.
Day 3: Surgery Day
  • You should arrive at the clinic at the scheduled time for the hair transplant procedure.
  • If undergoing FUE, expect a non-incisional method with minimal scarring and faster recovery. If FUT is chosen, prepare for an incision at the back of the head, allowing for a higher number of grafts.
  • The procedure will be performed under local anesthesia. You may be offered an overnight caregiver if general anesthesia is used.
  • Post-surgery, the clinic will provide initial shampooing and dressing on the surgery area.
  • Receive detailed instructions on post-operative care, including how to shampoo during the recovery period.
Day 4-14: Recovery and Follow-Up
  • You should rest and follow the post-operative care instructions diligently to ensure optimal healing.
  • Avoid strenuous activities and protect the grafted area from direct sunlight.
  • Attend follow-up appointments at the clinic for post-op check-ups and stitch removal if necessary.
  • Utilize deswelling laser and IV shots if provided by the clinic to aid recovery.
  • Continue communication with the clinic for any concerns or unusual symptoms.
Day 15: Departure and Long-Term Care
  • Before departure, have a final check-up with the clinic to assess the initial healing and receive long-term care instructions.
  • Discuss the timeline for hair growth. Transplanted hair may initially fall out before new growth begins, typically noticeable around 6 months post-surgery.
  • Understand that significant results are often visible after 12 months, with more than 80% of the outcome achieved.
  • Ensure you have contact information for the clinic in case of questions or follow-up needs once you return home.
  • Prepare for your flight back home, ensuring comfort during travel as you continue the recovery process.

The competence, careful attitude and attention to every little detail is what I really liked
I would like to thank my doctor for his careful attention to my difficult situation. The competence, careful attitude and attention to every little detail is what I really liked. Now I am still recovering and the final result is still far away, but I believe that everything will be fine. I would like to mention my coordinator-translator Jena. She is a very nice girl who helped me during my stay. Kind, nice, responsible and competent. She made me feel very comfortable. Thank you very much to the doctor, Jena and the clinic staff for everything. I will definitely recommend to my friends.

I couldn't have asked for more!
I had surgery done in Korea 2 weeks ago. Bookimed had recommended a few clinics and surgeons initially and I chose VG Plastic Surgery Clinic. Ms. Queen at Bookimed helped with getting answers to many of my questions from the clinic. She followed up with me frequently and continues to do so after my surgery. Bookimed made it easier for me to narrow down on the clinic and surgeon, which I appreciated given the number of surgeons and clincs available in Korea! Ms. Queen at Bookimed assisted with setting up an initial virtual consultation with VG surgery clinic where I met Dr. Choi and Jenny (VG's coordinator and interpreter). After arriving in Korea, I had an in-person consultation with Dr. Choi and Jenny, they listened to my concerns and suggested an alternate surgery method. At the end, my surgical plan was adjusted and finalized. I really appreciated that they listened to my concerns, provided an alternative and adjusted accordingly. I believed my surgery went well since this was my first experience. Jenny at VG was terrific! She acted as my interpreter and organized my recovery services at the clinic. Jenny was accessible during my stay in Korea. I couldn't have asked for more! I flew home after 10 days and slowly recovering now at home. At this point (2 weeks), I am seeing more improvements. I can't wait to see my final results which will be in 3 to 6 months. I am hoping it will be as good as I imagine!
Dr. Choi's expertise and the fact that he listed to my concerns, provided a viable alternative and adjusted accordingly. Also really appreciated that they had interpreter for foreigners who did not speak the language and that they are accessible at all time.
Nurses during surgery were a bit mechanical. I am sure they are in surgeries all day and for them it is routine but for the patient, this could be their first time. A gentler approach would have helped to ease the anxiety.

I would highly recommend this clinic for its quality service and professionalism
I am very pleased with my choice of this clinic. From the very beginning the communication with the clinic staff was fast and of high quality. I chose from 3 clinics. It was in this clinic that I got the best price and quality service before and after the procedure. I had a second rhinoplasty. The doctor did just a jewellery work with my nose. Very carefully, without much interference, he corrected the flaws from the first surgery I had a couple of years ago in Turkey. I am very happy with the result. My nose is now straight and neat. I was also very pleased with the service at the clinic after the operation. I had all the necessary procedures to reduce the swelling immediately after the operation and then during the week I still came a couple of times for procedures, so the recovery took literally a week. Special thanks to the assistant Joan. She was always in touch and very supportive throughout my stay in Korea. I would highly recommend this clinic for its quality service and professionalism.

By far the most attentive care I have EVER gotten in medicine—again, thanks especially to Joanne, who even walked me back to my hotel across the street post-op
One would fear that flying to a foreign country where you don’t know the language would be stressful and scary. Not only did the staff (Joanne <3!) make that all a cakewalk, the clinic’s aftercare was top notch, they really went above and beyond for me. And I am NOT an easy patient—I need to know every chemical in the anesthesia, I negotiate different antibiotics, make them go over my 21 daily supplements, etc—I kept them BUSY and was shown nothing but continual grace and warmth, and was always responded to promptly. By far the most attentive care I have EVER gotten in medicine—again, thanks especially to Joanne, who even walked me back to my hotel across the street post op. As for the surgery outcome, I didn’t even need a Tylenol it was that painless, I was able to walk around and enjoy Seoul every day after my mini lift, and although I’m still swollen at just under two weeks out, I already look ten years younger and am loving what I’m seeing. Dr. Park knows what he is doing, he’s done 3000+ facelifts (yes I asked), he has superb attention to detail, a true artist’s hand, and is a friendly and gentlemanly doctor!

I give Saero Plastic Surgery a 5 because they exceeded my expectations
Dr. Pak is very knowledgeable and professional. It has been over a week sonce my surgery and see.s that everything is healing well. He prescribed a pack of antibiotics and pain killers for me to take for 5 days. The medication worked great because I was at a very minimal pain. His staff walked me through everything I needed from the US to Korea. I felt confident that I was in good hands and I was. The interpreter did a great good Interpreting everything I needed to ask the doctor and addressed all my concerns. I give Saero Plastic Surgery a 5 because they exceeded my expectations. Definitely recommend to everyone.

Now two months after surgery, I am quite happy with the shape of my new eyelids
The medical team members are so friendly and helpful. Although I speak zero Korean, I can sense their passion and empathy, which dramatically reduced my anxiety to go through the surgery. They are very supportive from the right beginning to the end when I left Seoul. And big thanks to the assistance from Yena, who provides detailed before and after care instructions rather than just working as an interpreter. Now two months after surgery, I am quite happy with the shape of my new eyelids. They look much younger and alert.

I’m so touched by their attitude and thoughtfulness, especially after my surgery
All medical staff and the doctor were wonderful throughout my treatment journey. Nurses were very kind, attentive and very thoughtful. I’m so touched by their attitude and thoughtfulness, especially after my surgery. Nurse Joanne and Nurse Jenny accompanied me back to the hotel, bought necessities for me and even gave me an umbrella because it was going to be a rainy weekend. Kept in touch with me even in the weekend to check up on me. Thank you!

the translator Joanne was excellent and very attentive
t was a great experience, the doctor was good, but could have been more attentive. The staff are a little curt when it comes to customer service, but the translator Joanne was excellent and very attentive, there was also a very friendly older nurse. And there were also free therapeutic treatments that I really liked. Now I need to wait for the results to give a real assessment of whether the treatment was really good.

The experience for me, in general, was excellent, I would go back to the Dr
I was very pleased with the attention I received from the first day I arrived at the clinic. The interpreter was able to communicate perfectly to the surgeon what I wanted to be done and what my expectations were. I loved the hospitality of the Medical Team, all very attentive, very concerned about whether I was feeling well or not, reminding me of my check-ups, cleaning, suture removal, giving me all the information for the post-operative period, giving me light and oxygen therapy sessions to improve and accelerate the results of my recovery. The clinic is located in a very central place in Gangnam, it is easy to get there. It is very close to the flat that the clinic provides during your stay until the first check-up. The clinic is spacious, well-lit, very clean, with flexible opening hours for post-operative care. The real estate is very comfortable, they have coffee and tea so that you can help yourself. And, they don't keep you waiting. Everything works as scheduled. And, additionally, they provided me with help on how to get around the city, how to get to the tourist attractions, to the shops where they sell skin care products, etc. The experience for me, in general, was excellent, I would go back to the Dr. and I recommend him 100% to those people who are looking for a good clinic where they can have surgery with the full confidence that everything will go very well.
I loved that the Dr. was very patient in understanding exactly what I wanted, thanks to the interpreter I was able to make the Dr. understand everything perfectly. I also liked very much the attention of the medical team that continued to see me the days after the surgery and the warmth and kindness of each one of them. As well as giving me all the instructions I had to follow, they gave me the creams I had to use so that the swelling and bruising would disappear more quickly.
I have nothing to complain about the Clinic, the Dr., the medical team, the interpreter and the care I received before, during and after my surgery. I just think that I should have stayed longer in South Korea to get to see more beautiful places.
About Bookimed service
Bookimed made it easy for me to have a person who speaks my language to assist me whenever I had questions about the different alternatives of plastic surgery clinics that I could ask to evaluate me and give me a quote. When I had already decided on the clinic I wanted to go to, the person who assisted me very kindly answered all the questions I had after I had made my choice. She sent me all the information I asked for about the clinic, the background of the Dr. who was going to operate on me, health permits, health registration of the Dr., validity of his professional title, etc. Everything I needed to make sure I made a very informed decision and knew everything about the clinic, the Dr, the place where I would be operated on, where the clinic was located, where I would be staying from the day of the surgery until a week later and, obviously, how much I was going to be charged. There was only one difference with respect to the initial budget, but it was because once I was in the clinic I added a part of my face that had not been contemplated before. But even so, the final price did not increase too much compared to what I was charged at other clinics in South Korea.

Most of all, I just wanted to say that I recommend VG because of the wonderful consideration, kindness, and support that I received there
I would like to share my experience with BookiMed and their recommmendation, VG (Very Good) Plastic Surgery. Doctor: Dr. Im Young Min Procedures: Deep plane facelift, mid-face lift with fat graft, sub-brow lift, lower blepharoplasty Referral: I had been wanting to get this surgery for quite a long time, but didn't know which clinic would be best, so I applied to Bookimed who gave me several quotes/recommendations based on my needs. I liked the procedures suggested by VG Plastic Surgery the best and I saw that they had good reviews online, so I set up a consultation. Consultation: At the consultation, several photos were taken in order to analyze the surgery and what would work best for me. The doctor suggested a sub-brow lift for my sagging eyelid skin, a deep plane facelift and a midface lift to address the loss of volume and sagging along with a fat graft to restore the volume to my cheeks, and a lower blepharoplasty to address the hollowness under my eyes along with the malar edema. I worked with Smile, one of the consultants who was very helpful and went over everything with me including all of the options and prices. She was very professional but warm, which is one reason that I decided to go with VG over other clinics. Pre-Surgery Check-up: A few days before my surgery, I went in for a checkup where they did a chest x-ray and a blood test to make sure my body was healthy enough for the surgery. I met with Dr. Im, my surgeon, to go over the plan for the surgery and make sure everything was in place. I met another consultant, Lily, who interpreted everything for me and made sure that everything was clear and comfortable for me. Surgery: The day of surgery, I did an interview about the procedure and how I was feeling prior to the surgery as well as taking several "before" photos to use as comparison. I had also fasted for 8 hours (food and water). The surgery was very smooth, but I believe it lasted a long time- between 6-8 hours as there were many procedures being done. I had to have a breathing tube, which was quite uncomfortable for the first 12 hours after surgery, but I was glad that the doctors took every precaution. They also put in drains in my neck and inside my mouth to keep blood and fluid from pooling under my skin as well as a catheter. Post-Surgery: After surgery, I was taken to a private room for recovery. I stayed in the room for about 24 hours and the nurses took very good care of me, coming in to replace the ice packs for my face, check on my catheter and incisions and just making sure I was comfortable. I was eventually able to have water, then some soy milk, and finally some porridge when I was ready. Lily and Smile checked on me several times to be sure everything was alright and to translate for me. The next day before leaving the hospital, the bandages were removed and Dr. Im came in and checked on me to make sure that everything had gone well. Lily, Smile and another consultant, Jenny, were there to interpret and to make sure I was alright. They removed the catheter and cleaned the incisions, replacing them with clean bandages. I also did an oxygen treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, which was very relaxing. I took a taxi home with Smile's support. Scary Moment: One thing that happened that was a bit scary for me was that I wasn't prepared for how much my eyes would swell up after the surgery. I felt like my bandages were bursting (and the nurse helped me to relieve some of the pressure) and when I looked at myself the day after the surgery, I wasn't prepared for what I saw. The veins in my eyes burst, making them completely red and my eyes swelled up so much I could barely see. This was scary for me as I had not seen this in any of the videos I had watched prior when doing my research. The staff assured me it was normal and that it would go back down, but I guess I'd say that for the first 2-3 days after the surgery, I was pretty worried that something was wrong. The ointment I was applying to keep the incisions clean also coated my eyes from time to time blurring my vision, which was scary, but the consultant assured me this was only because of the medication. I went back to the clinic after 3 days for a check-up and to have my incisions cleaned and the blood drains emptied. Each time I visited the clinic, I was given an oxygen treatment and several photos were taken for documentation. After the swelling in my eyes went down, my recovery progressed quickly. I had more visits (at 7 days, 10 days, 14 days and then 3 weeks) to remove stitches and drains and to monitor my progress. At 7 days, I was given a complimentary hair wash as well, which was very relaxing and such a relief. I also wore a head brace/wrap to keep my face from moving around too much for about a month. I did take it off to sleep at times because it felt tight, but I tried to keep it on during the day for the most part. Conclusion: I am now 5 months post-op, and I am very happy with my results. I feel that my concerns were addressed, and that I look younger and fresher, but still like myself, which was always the goal of this surgery for me. I feel a renewed vigor and like I look like the person I have always been, if that makes sense. I still have some puffiness under my eyes at times, especially when I have built up fluid retention or am very tired, and I am still working to find the cause/solution for this. I believe it is related to lymphatic drainage, so I understand that the surgery could not fully correct this issue, although I do feel like it is better than before. Most of all, I just wanted to say that I recommend VG because of the wonderful consideration, kindness, and support that I received there. From the way that the consultants went out of their way to help and support me, not just through translation, but by encouraging me and helping me, to the care the nurses gave me, to the skill that Dr. Im and his staff in the operating room showed, I am very happy. The scars from my incisions are unnoticeable and will most likely become completely invisible with time, and I feel that my surgery goals were reached. A big thanks to VG Surgery and their staff. I would also like to thank Bookimed for helping me to find this clinic and giving me the information I needed to make my decision.
The customer service and attention from the staff at VG was the best part of my experience. They were all very caring and attentive.
I would have liked to have more post-op consultation with the surgeon and to have been able to ask him more about my questions/concerns.
About Bookimed service
Bookimed was very prompt and responsive, giving me several choices and listening to my concerns and feelings about everything. They recommended several clinics and this gave me a lot of options to consider before making my decision. It's difficult to trust online reviews, so I really appreciated having another level of research before making a choice.

Our Hair transplant Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Hair transplant, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

FUE Hair Transplant

Follicular Unit Extraction involves removing individual hair follicles from a donor area and implanting them into balding or thinning areas.

Pros: Minimal scarring compared to FUT. Faster healing than DHI, with 10-15% more grafts possible in one session. Ideal for achieving a natural hairline.
Cons: Longer procedure time than ARTAS robotic hair transplant. May require multiple sessions for extensive hair loss compared to organic methods.
Effectiveness: Up to 4000 grafts per session.
Duration: 4-8 hours
Recovery: 7-10 days
Best for: Hair loss in small to moderate areas, creating a natural hairline.
Prices: Cost of FUE hair transplant in Republic of Korea from $5,500

DHI Hair Transplantation

Direct Hair Implantation involves using a specialized pen to implant hair follicles one by one directly into the scalp.

Pros: Provides precise control over hair direction and density, ensuring a natural hairline. Minimal handling of hair follicles increases survival rate by up to 15%.
Cons: Typically more time-consuming than FUE and requires highly skilled practitioners. This can result in longer sessions.
Effectiveness: Up to 95% graft survival rate.
Duration: 6-8 hours
Recovery: 7-10 days
Best for: Small areas requiring high precision, up to 4000 grafts.

FUT Hair Transplant

Follicular Unit Transplantation involves removing a strip of scalp to harvest hair follicles for implantation.

Pros: Higher graft yield in a single session. Up to 4,000 grafts can be transplanted, more than FUE or DHI methods.
Cons: Leaves a linear scar, unlike FUE or ARTAS which are less invasive. Longer recovery time compared to DHI.
Effectiveness: Success rate of 95-98% for graft survival.
Duration: 4-8 hours
Recovery: 10-14 days
Best for: Treating large bald areas, with up to 4,000 grafts for extensive hair loss.

FAQ about Hair transplant in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Are clinics in Seoul foreigner-friendly for international patients?

Seoul clinics are exceptionally foreigner-friendly, featuring dedicated international healthcare centers with multilingual coordinators and English-speaking surgeons. Many facilities in districts like Gangnam offer seamless medical tourism experiences, including administrative support, visa assistance, and integrated recovery services for global patients.

  • Multilingual coordination: Clinics like VG Plastic Surgery employ staff fluent in 47 languages.
  • Government accreditation: KOIHA-certified facilities must meet strict international safety and quality standards.
  • Specialized hair centers: MOAMAN Hair Transplant Clinic offers tailored care near Sinsa station.
  • Elite hospital infrastructure: SNUH and Severance Hospital provide comprehensive `one-stop` international patient services.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While large hospitals like SNUH serve over 10,000 patients daily, specialized boutique clinics in Gangnam often provide more personalized `concierge-style` care. Data shows clinics like VG Plastic Surgery successfully manage international volumes by focusing on high-demand aesthetic procedures and luxury accommodations. This creates a more tailored experience than the high-traffic university systems.

Patient Consensus: Patients praise the natural hair transplant results and superior hygiene standards compared to other hubs. They recommend staying firm against upselling during consultations and suggest using apps like WhatsApp or WeChat for direct pre-arrival communication.

Is hair transplant surgery in Korea safe, and what are the major risks?

Hair transplant surgery in South Korea is exceptionally safe due to rigorous government oversight and advanced medical infrastructure. Facilities like Severance Hospital hold Joint Commission International accreditation, ensuring global safety standards. While complications are rare, risks include minor infection, temporary facial swelling, and shock loss during the first 3 months.

  • Expert specialization: Surgeons often focus exclusively on hair restoration using Follicular Unit Extraction techniques.
  • Clinical accreditation: Top clinics maintain Korean Institute for Healthcare Accreditation (KOIHA) or JCI certifications.
  • High success: Leading centers like Forhair Korea report graft survival rates reaching 97 percent.
  • Technology access: Surgeons utilize robotic systems and high-powered microscopes to minimize donor area trauma.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from clinics like MOAMAN shows a high concentration of surgeons with dual memberships in the International and Asian Societies of Hair Transplantation. This dual expertise is crucial because Asian hair follicles are typically thicker and more prone to scarring. Choosing a specialist with this specific background significantly reduces the risk of long-term donor area thinning.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of researching donor zone preservation rather than focusing solely on graft counts. Many suggest planning a 14-day stay to ensure proper follow-up care and avoid healing issues caused by early travel.

How do I know I’m a good candidate for a hair transplant in Korea?

Ideal candidates for hair transplantation in Korea possess stable hair loss patterns, sufficient donor density at the back of the head, and realistic cosmetic goals. Korean specialists typically prioritize patients aged 25 or older with Norwood Scale stages 3 to 6 and a donor density of at least 40–80 follicular units per square centimeter.

  • Age requirement: Candidates should be 25+ to ensure hair loss patterns are predictable and stable.
  • Donor supply: Sufficient healthy follicles in the safe donor zone must be available for harvesting.
  • Health status: Patients must be free of active scalp infections or uncontrolled autoimmune conditions.
  • Hair quality: Thicker, darker hair provides better coverage and higher cosmetic density with fewer grafts.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many search for the lowest price, the real value in Seoul lies in specialized credentials. MOAMAN Hair Transplant Clinic features directors with academic backgrounds from the Kyungpook National University hair transplant center. This specific training often indicates a surgeon is better equipped for complex high-density cases or unshaven techniques.

Patient Consensus: Success often requires stabilizing hair loss with medication for 6 months before surgery. Many advise getting multiple photo consultations to compare donor area assessments across different clinics before traveling.

What technique is used in Korea—FUE or FUT—and which gives the best result?

South Korea predominantly utilizes advanced FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), specifically specialized Manual and No-Shave FUE techniques, to achieve high-density results without linear scarring. While FUT is available for extreme hair loss, Korean clinics prioritize minimally invasive FUE due to internal transection rates below 2 percent.

  • Manual extraction: Surgeons like Dr. Kim Dae Young at MOAMAN Clinic use hand-held tools for precision.
  • No-shave FUE: This discreet technique allows patients to return to work within 3 to 5 days.
  • Dense packing: Korean specialists routinely achieve 40 to 60 grafts per cm² for natural thickness.
  • Graft survival: Manual techniques in Seoul centers often report success rates exceeding 95 percent per session.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many global regions rely on motorized punches, Seoul clinics like MOAMAN or Wonjin Plastic Surgery specialize in manual FUE for higher graft integrity. Data shows patients often choose Korea specifically for No-Shave FUE, which costs between $6,200 and $12,000, reflecting the high technical skill required for non-shorn procedures.

Patient Consensus: Most patients favor the manual FUE approach because it avoids the visible linear scar associated with FUT. In-person mapping is essential as Korean surgeons rarely provide final graft counts or fixed quotes without a physical scalp examination.

How long will I need to stay in Korea, and what does a typical surgery trip timeline look like?

Patients typically need 7 to 10 days in Korea for a hair transplant. This timeframe covers the initial consultation, an 8–12 hour procedure, and essential post-operative scalp care. Most clinics require a vital follow-up visit on day 4 or 5 for professional hair washing.

  • Arrival and consultation: Spend day 1 resting and meeting surgeons at Seoul clinics like MOAMAN.
  • Procedure day: Hair transplants are outpatient day cases lasting 8 to 12 hours total.
  • Initial recovery: Expect swelling to peak by day 5 while scabbing forms on the scalp.
  • Follow-up care: Return to the clinic on day 4 or 5 for specialized washing.
  • Final check-up: Complete a final evaluation before your flight to ensure grafts are secure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korea's specialized hair centers often utilize the no-shave technique, which is ideal for patients needing immediate discretion. Clinics like MOAMAN hold KOIHA accreditation, ensuring higher safety standards than general aesthetic centers. Choosing a facility in Gangnam simplifies logistics, as most high-volume surgeons are concentrated near major transit hubs.

Patient Consensus: Plan for a 7-day minimum stay to manage peak swelling and initial scabbing comfortably. Using a loose hat for the flight home helps maintain privacy while protecting the new grafts.

How visible will scars be, and will I still be able to wear my hair short after a transplant?

Hair transplant scars in the Republic of Korea are nearly invisible when using modern Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) techniques. FUE leaves tiny dot-like marks under 1mm that allow for very short hairstyles like buzz cuts. Surgeons in Seoul also utilize trichophytic closure for linear scars to improve concealment.

  • FUE visibility: Individual extraction sites heal as tiny white dots hidden by 3–5mm hair.
  • FUT scarring: Linear scars are 1–2mm wide and typically require 6–12mm hair for coverage.
  • Healing timeline: Red dots fade within 3–6 months while linear scars lighten after 12 months.
  • Korean innovation: Many clinics perform No-Shave FUE for discreet procedures and immediate scar camouflage.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many focus on the extraction method, the experience of the surgeon matters more for short hair. Top Korean specialists like those at MOAMAN Hair Transplant Clinic use microscopic punches to prevent a patchy look. Selecting a clinic with high patient volumes, like Wonjin or URBAN, ensures your donor area remains dense enough for future short styles.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that wavy hair hides scars much faster during the first year. Most recommend keeping hair slightly longer than intended while the initial pinkness from extraction sites fully fades away.

When will I see the final result, and what is the expected survival rate of the grafts?

Final hair transplant results in the Republic of Korea typically appear between 12 and 18 months post-procedure. Successful grafts achieve a 90% to 95% survival rate in healthy individuals, supported by advanced techniques like FUE and DHI performed by International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery members.

  • Initial growth: New hair emerges between 3 and 4 months following the shedding phase.
  • Noticeable density: Patients see significant thickening and coverage improvement from 6 to 9 months.
  • Final maturation: Stable appearance and full hair texture are reached by 12 to 18 months.
  • Graft survival: Experienced Korean surgeons maintain survival rates between 90% and 95%.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Leading Seoul clinics like MOAMAN Hair Transplant Clinic use specialized directors with over 10 years of experience to minimize graft out-of-body time. Keeping follicles outside the body for under 4 hours is the most critical factor for ensuring that 95% survival rate.

Patient Consensus: Many notice uneven growth or temporary shock loss around month 3, which is a normal part of the process. Real density feels life-changing by month 9, provided you follow strict post-op cleaning to prevent infections.

Do I need a medical visa, interpreter, or special documents to have surgery in Korea?

Most Western travelers enter the Republic of Korea visa-free for 90 days using a K-ETA or standard tourist entry for hair transplants. You only need a C-3-3 medical visa for stays requiring formal caregiver support or specific administrative medical documentation during your recovery.

  • Travel authorization: Use K-ETA for stays under 90 days from visa-exempt countries.
  • Language support: Major Seoul clinics like VG Plastic Surgery provide in-house multilingual coordinators.
  • Required documents: Patients must present a passport valid for at least 6 months.
  • Medical records: Submit your medical history and hair loss photos digitally before arrival.
  • Financial proof: Prepare bank statements if applying for a formal G-1-10 medical visa.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While general hospitals like Severance require complex paperwork, specialized hair centers in Gangnam, such as MOAMAN, streamline the process. These boutiques often include dedicated translators in their service flow, making independent interpreters unnecessary for 95% of international hair transplant patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the digital-first approach where clinics review photos and medical history via messaging apps before travel. Most find that arriving 2 days early for blood work ensures a smooth transition into surgery day.
