How Much Does Strabismus treatment Cost in Spain?

Strabismus treatment in Spain typically costs from $2,500 to $4,500 depending on the complexity and surgical approach. Prices in medical hubs like Barcelona and Madrid reflect clinic tier and specialized pediatric equipment. In the US, similar procedures cost around $5,800 on average. Patients save around 40% compared to US prices. Standard Spanish packages usually cover pre-operative diagnostics, surgeon fees, and post-operative follow-up visits.

  • Strabismus surgery: $2,000 to $3,600 for corrective eye muscle procedures.
  • Amblyopia treatment: $1,500 to $3,000 focusing on non-surgical vision therapy.
  • Specialized pediatric care: Centers like SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital offer high-volume expertise for children.
  • Geographic variations: Prices in Pamplona clinics typically run 30-40% lower than in Barcelona or Madrid.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Barcelona offers a unique concentration of world-class expertise. Dr. Fernando Castanera de Molina at Teknon pioneered laser techniques in Spain. Meanwhile, SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital ranks as a top-3 European pediatric center. With 4,000 annual pediatric surgeries, they offer unmatched clinical experience. Choosing Pamplona clinics like Universidad de Navarra can reduce costs to approximately $2,800 or $4,000. This provides elite JCI-accredited care at a lower price point than larger cities.

Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.
About Bookimed service

Our Strabismus treatment Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Strabismus treatment, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Strabismus surgery

Strabismus surgery involves adjusting the muscles of the eyes to improve alignment and correct vision issues.

Pros: Offers a permanent solution for eye misalignment, with improvement in binocular vision in 80% of cases. Quick procedure with a success rate of up to 90%.
Cons: Requires anesthesia, which may pose risks, especially in children. Potential for multiple surgeries in 20% of cases if misalignment persists.
Effectiveness: Success rate: 80-90% in achieving improved eye alignment.
Duration: 1-2 hours
Recovery: 1-2 weeks
Best for: Children and adults with significant ocular misalignment and binocular vision issues.
Prices: Cost of Strabismus surgery in Spain from $2,000

Amblyopia treatment

Amblyopia treatment aims to improve vision in the weaker eye by stimulating its use and correcting any underlying issues.

Pros: Can significantly improve vision in children if detected early, with success rates of up to 75%. Non-invasive options like patching and vision therapy make it less risky compared to surgery.
Cons: May require long-term commitment to therapy and consistent monitoring. Effectiveness decreases after age 7, with only 25% success in older children.
Effectiveness: 90% success rate in patients under 7 years old when combined with corrective measures.
Duration: The procedure varies, often requiring several weeks to months of therapy.
Recovery: Not needed.
Best for: Children under 7 years with lazy eye, particularly where vision disparity is 2 lines or more on an eye chart.
