Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.
About Bookimed service

Our Strabismus treatment Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Strabismus treatment, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Strabismus surgery

Strabismus surgery involves adjusting the muscles of the eyes to improve alignment and correct vision issues.

Pros: Offers a permanent solution for eye misalignment, with improvement in binocular vision in 80% of cases. Quick procedure with a success rate of up to 90%.
Cons: Requires anesthesia, which may pose risks, especially in children. Potential for multiple surgeries in 20% of cases if misalignment persists.
Effectiveness: Success rate: 80-90% in achieving improved eye alignment.
Duration: 1-2 hours
Recovery: 1-2 weeks
Best for: Children and adults with significant ocular misalignment and binocular vision issues.
Prices: Cost of Strabismus surgery in Spain from $2,000

Amblyopia treatment

Amblyopia treatment aims to improve vision in the weaker eye by stimulating its use and correcting any underlying issues.

Pros: Can significantly improve vision in children if detected early, with success rates of up to 75%. Non-invasive options like patching and vision therapy make it less risky compared to surgery.
Cons: May require long-term commitment to therapy and consistent monitoring. Effectiveness decreases after age 7, with only 25% success in older children.
Effectiveness: 90% success rate in patients under 7 years old when combined with corrective measures.
Duration: The procedure varies, often requiring several weeks to months of therapy.
Recovery: Not needed.
Best for: Children under 7 years with lazy eye, particularly where vision disparity is 2 lines or more on an eye chart.
Prices: Cost of Amblyopia treatment in Spain from $1,500

FAQ about Strabismus treatment in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate of strabismus surgery in Spain?

Strabismus surgery in Spain yields success rates between 85% and 90% for children and adults. Specialized clinics utilizing adjustable sutures often exceed 90% accuracy. Experts at JCI-accredited centers in Barcelona and Madrid perform hundreds of procedures annually to ensure immediate, stable eye alignment.

  • Expert credentials: Surgeons like Dr. Fernando Castanera de Molina are Spanish Society of Ophthalmology members.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics use adjustable sutures for precise alignment during the procedure while awake.
  • Rapid recovery: Most patients see immediate improvement with final results stabilizing within 30 days.
  • Specialized care: SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital provides dedicated pediatric eye surgery for complex cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain is a top 3 global destination for ophthalmology at Bookimed for a reason. While general clinics are common, choosing a facility like Centro Médico Teknon or SJD Barcelona ensures access to surgeons who pioneered laser treatments and pediatric anterior segment surgery, significantly reducing regression risks.

Patient Consensus: Patients report high satisfaction with the cosmetic alignment, even when functional vision remains limited. Success is most consistent when using adjustable sutures, though experts emphasize that follow-up care is essential to manage a 10–15% chance of long-term regression.

Is strabismus surgery safe for adults?

Strabismus surgery is a safe, effective outpatient procedure for adults that restores eye alignment and visual field depth. Performed under general anesthesia, it involves adjusting eye muscles to correct misalignment, with most patients returning to light activities within 24 to 48 hours.

  • Hospital stay: Typically performed as an outpatient procedure, requiring no overnight hospital stay.
  • Recovery timeline: Patients return to work in 7 days, avoiding swimming for 2 weeks.
  • Success markers: Most cases achieve successful alignment, though minor adjustments may occur post-operatively.
  • Safety standards: Top facilities like Centro Médico Teknon hold Joint Commission International accreditation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s specialized vision centers offer a distinct advantage: surgeons like Dr. Fernando Castanera de Molina at Centro Médico Teknon pioneered laser and lens innovations. This deep expertise in refractive and muscle surgery often allows for more precise adjustments during a single session, reducing the likelihood of requiring secondary corrective procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe the physical discomfort as manageable grittiness and redness, but emphasize the emotional impact as life-changing. Many report a major boost in confidence and easier eye contact immediately after the procedure.

What are the most successful types of strabismus surgery?

Horizontal and vertical muscle adjustments are the most successful strabismus surgeries, boasting success rates between 80% and 90%. Surgeons typically use recession or resection techniques to balance eye alignment. Adjustable suture surgery is specifically noted for increasing precision in complex cases by allowing post-operative fine-tuning.

  • Adjustable suture technique: Provides real-time alignment fine-tuning, significantly reducing the statistical need for re-operation.
  • Horizontal procedures: Effectively treats inward or outward turning eyes with 60% to 80% success.
  • Recession and resection: Standard weakening or strengthening techniques used for horizontal and vertical eye misalignments.
  • Fixed suture surgery: Offers a faster recovery timeline for patients with straightforward, non-complex eye misalignments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s leading ophthalmology centers, like Centro Médico Teknon, offer a distinct advantage with specialists such as Dr. Fernando Castanera de Molina. He pioneered laser ophthalmic treatments in the country. Data indicates that choosing a clinic with high surgical volumes, such as the 23,500 operations performed annually at Teknon, correlates with higher precision in complex pediatric and adult strabismus cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients value how adjustable sutures allow for precise results while avoiding second surgeries. Many report that while temporary double vision is a common hurdle, the long-term boost in social confidence is transformative.

What to expect during strabismus treatment?

Strabismus treatment involves surgical or non-surgical methods to align the eyes and restore binocular vision. Patients can expect a 30–60 minute outpatient procedure using adjustable sutures or muscle resection. Spanish centers like Centro Médico Teknon provide specialized care under Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.

  • Procedure duration: Most surgical sessions last 30–60 minutes under local or general anesthesia.
  • Treatment approaches: Options include muscle resection, recession, adjustable sutures, Botox injections, or prism therapy.
  • Recovery timeline: Eye redness is normal; brain adaptation to new alignment takes 6–8 weeks.
  • Follow-up care: Initial checks occur within 24 hours to monitor muscle tension and healing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows Spain is a top-3 global destination for ocular surgery, with clinics like SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital performing 14,000 operations annually. Patients should prioritize surgeons like Dr. Fernando Castanera de Molina, a pioneer who introduced collamer lens technology to Spain. His membership in both European and American refractive societies ensures access to the latest global alignment techniques.

Patient Consensus: Expect visible redness for several days and persistent double vision for up to 8 weeks while your brain adjusts. Expert advice suggests seeking a specialist in pediatric ophthalmology, even for adult cases, to ensure deeper expertise in complex muscle alignment.
