Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.

FAQ about Amblyopia treatment in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the common treatments for lazy eye used in Spain?

Common treatments for lazy eye in Spain include vision therapy, patching, and specialized software to improve neural connections. Spanish clinics like Centro Médico Teknon and Hospital Ruber Internacional utilize advanced techniques. These range from non-invasive VR-based exercises to adjustable strabismus surgery for complex cases.

  • Vision therapy: Office-based exercises and VR programs stimulate the weaker eye and brain.
  • Occlusion therapy: Patching the stronger eye remains a standard method for neural strengthening.
  • Corrective optics: Specialists prescribe prism lenses, contact lenses, or Bangerter filters for alignment.
  • Surgical intervention: Adjustable strabismus surgery allows doctors to fine-tune results using specialized sutures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks third globally for medical requests in ophthalmology on our platform. High-volume centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional serve 25,000 patients annually. Our data shows clinics often integrate local VR software into therapy packages. This digital focus helps maintain engagement during the long recovery process.

Patient Consensus: Many patients recommend beginning with conservative therapy like pencil push-ups or patching. Those choosing surgery often prefer specialists using adjustable sutures for precise alignment results.

What is the best age to treat amblyopia in Spain?

The best age to treat amblyopia in Spain is between 3 and 7 years old. Spanish pediatric guidelines emphasize early screenings at ages 3, 4, and 5. This window maximizes brain plasticity before visual pathways finalize around age 10 to 12.

  • Critical window: Early intervention before age 6 offers the highest success for restoring vision.
  • Screening schedule: Spanish clinics prioritize exams at ages 3, 4, and 5 for detection.
  • Treatment limits: Standard patching effectiveness significantly diminishes after age 8 and is discouraged after 12.
  • Surgical timing: Strabismus surgery outcomes are most successful when performed before the child turns 5.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks 3rd globally for eye care requests, with centers like Centro Médico Teknon holding JCI accreditation. While early childhood is ideal, specialized clinics in Barcelona now offer dichoptic training for older children. These technologies provide a second chance for vision recovery after the traditional patching window closes.

Patient Consensus: Parents stress that waiting after age 6 makes progress much slower. Many wish they had started therapy sooner to avoid the intensive 6-hour daily commitment required for older children.

Can adults in Spain get treatment for amblyopia?

Adults in Spain can access advanced amblyopia treatment through neurological visual retraining and dichoptic training. Specialized centers in Barcelona and Madrid utilize virtual reality and vision therapy to improve visual acuity. These modern techniques often achieve a 75% success rate by leveraging adult neural plasticity.

  • Treatment methods: Clinics offer dichoptic training, virtual reality (VR), and specialized software like RevitalVision.
  • Clinical centers: JCI-accredited facilities like Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona provide expert ophthalmology care.
  • Program duration: Modern therapy typically requires consistent daily effort over 6 to 18 months.
  • Expert oversight: Specialists like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora monitor progress to adjust training intensity.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks among the top three destinations globally for specialized medical requests. While many doctors still believe adult brains cannot change, centers like Teknon use VR-based training programs. These games activate the lazy eye while both eyes remain open, preventing the double vision risks associated with traditional adult patching.

Patient Consensus: Success depends heavily on daily consistency over several months rather than quick fixes. Patients report that modern dichoptic training feels safer and more engaging than using patches, which can be socially difficult for working adults.

How many hours a day does a child need to patch in Spain?

Children in Spain typically follow patching protocols of 2 to 6 hours daily for amblyopia. Standard care at JCI-accredited centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional or Centro Médico Teknon adjusts duration based on visual acuity and the child's age to maximize success.

  • Moderate amblyopia: Children aged 3–12 usually require 2 to 6 hours of daily patching.
  • Severe amblyopia: Severe cases often involve 6 hours of patching or full-time waking hours.
  • Starting protocol: Specialists frequently prescribe 2 hours daily as a baseline for younger children.
  • Alternative options: Atropine drops serve as a pharmacological alternative for children in school environments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish ophthalmologists often prioritize consistency over total hours. Some specialists now recommend a 20-hour weekly target instead of strict daily quotas. This flexibility helps parents manage schedules while maintaining the same clinical efficacy as traditional 6-hour daily protocols.

Patient Consensus: Parents find that integrating patching with screen time or games significantly improves compliance. Many mention that establishing a firm daily routine is more effective than focusing on perfect timing each day.

Why choose Spain for amblyopia treatment?

Spain is a top destination for amblyopia treatment due to high-caliber specialists and advanced technologies like VR-based therapy. Patients access JCI-accredited facilities in Barcelona and Madrid that maintain a 75% success rate. The Spanish healthcare system ranks among the world’s best for pediatric eye care.

  • Expert specialists: Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora at Centro Médico Teknon leads specialized ophthalmology departments.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize cutting-edge RevitalVision software and virtual reality-based vision therapy exercises.
  • Clinical standards: Hospital Ruber Internacional holds Joint Commission International (JCI) and multiple ISO certifications.
  • Surgical options: Specialized centers perform strabismus surgery starting from $2,500 to treat underlying causes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s unique advantage is the concentration of high-volume research hospitals like Centro Médico Teknon. While basic vision therapy can be done at home, these centers offer exclusive access to proprietary VR software and CAM methods. This synergy between surgery and digital therapy explains the high success rates for adults.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the high-caliber specialists in Spain for complex pediatric cases. Many suggest verifying software region accessibility before beginning digital vision therapy programs to ensure seamless treatment at home.
