I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched
My main worry before the lateral canthoplasty was asymmetry, knowing how delicate the procedure is, but I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched. It's such a relief. The surgeon and the entire staff provided wonderful care from start to finish. While I'm still in the early stages of healing, the shape is already very close to my goal. The recovery has been manageable. The biggest challenge has been sleeping upright, but that's a small thing compared to the results. I'm so glad I chose this clinic for my procedure and feel very looked after.

Rude staff. And the trip turned out to be in vain. So much time, effort and money was spent. Documents were preliminarily sent, and extracts available at that time, treatment passed, etc. They invited me to the examination and obtain a preliminary treatment plan, although it was clear to the provided procurers that treatment was impossible. They did the same thing that they had sent earlier, shrugged their hands and said Excuse me, we can’t help ...

Our Strabismus treatment Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Strabismus treatment, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Strabismus surgery

Strabismus surgery involves adjusting the muscles of the eyes to improve alignment and correct vision issues.

Pros: Offers a permanent solution for eye misalignment, with improvement in binocular vision in 80% of cases. Quick procedure with a success rate of up to 90%.
Cons: Requires anesthesia, which may pose risks, especially in children. Potential for multiple surgeries in 20% of cases if misalignment persists.
Effectiveness: Success rate: 80-90% in achieving improved eye alignment.
Duration: 1-2 hours
Recovery: 1-2 weeks
Best for: Children and adults with significant ocular misalignment and binocular vision issues.

Amblyopia treatment

Amblyopia treatment aims to improve vision in the weaker eye by stimulating its use and correcting any underlying issues.

Pros: Can significantly improve vision in children if detected early, with success rates of up to 75%. Non-invasive options like patching and vision therapy make it less risky compared to surgery.
Cons: May require long-term commitment to therapy and consistent monitoring. Effectiveness decreases after age 7, with only 25% success in older children.
Effectiveness: 90% success rate in patients under 7 years old when combined with corrective measures.
Duration: The procedure varies, often requiring several weeks to months of therapy.
Recovery: Not needed.
Best for: Children under 7 years with lazy eye, particularly where vision disparity is 2 lines or more on an eye chart.

FAQ about Strabismus treatment in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate of strabismus treatment in South Korea?

Strabismus treatment in South Korea boasts success rates between 85% and 90%. Leading Seoul institutions achieve these results through adjustable suture surgery and botulinum toxin injections. Specialists at JCI-accredited facilities often have experience with over 2,000 procedures. This helps achieve precise eye alignment for adults and children.

  • Clinical efficacy: Success rates typically reach 85–90% for primary and complex alignments.
  • Specialist experience: Top ophthalmologists at Severance Hospital have performed 2,000+ eye surgeries.
  • Techniques: Surgeons use adjustable sutures to fine-tune alignment within 24 hours.
  • Global accreditation: Major centres like SNUBH hold GHA or JCI quality certifications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Seoul clinics market vision correction like SMILE or LASIK. However, specialists at Severance and SNUBH focus on muscular alignment. South Korean protocols often involve re-evaluating alignment 6 months post-surgery. This long-term monitoring means success figures reflect stable, permanent results. These figures do not just show immediate post-op status.

Patient Consensus: Patients are highly satisfied even with slight imperfections, often feeling 90% better than before. Many recommend confirming that clinics specialise in muscle correction rather than just refractive vision therapy.

Does strabismus surgery work for adults in South Korea?

Strabismus surgery is highly effective for adults in South Korea. It primarily corrects eye misalignment and eliminates double vision. Dedicated eye centres in Seoul perform hundreds of these procedures annually. Success rates for permanent ocular alignment range from 60% to 80%.

  • Procedure duration: Surgeons typically complete the operation in 30–45 minutes per eye.
  • Anaesthesia options: Most adults undergo general anaesthesia, though local anaesthesia stays an alternative.
  • Treatment cost: Surgery prices range from $2,800 to $5,200 for adult cases.
  • Accredited facilities: Major centres like Severance Hospital and Asan Medical Center hold JCI accreditation.
  • Australian savings: Patients save approximately 33% compared to the $4,600 Australian average price.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many general hospitals offer this surgery. However, choosing a facility like Gangnam Severance Hospital provides access to specialised robotic systems. These technologies often lead to more precise muscle adjustments. South Korean clinics also provide free interpreter services for treatments exceeding A$6,800. This simplifies technical medical discussions.

Patient Consensus: Many adults find the procedure successfully straightens their eyes for a better appearance. Plan for a 4–6 week stay. This covers essential pre-op tests, same-day surgery, and one-month follow-up appointments in the Republic of Korea.

What should I expect from strabismus surgery and recovery in South Korea?

Strabismus surgery in South Korea typically lasts 30 to 120 minutes at JCI-accredited centres like Severance Hospital. Expect same-day discharge with initial recovery taking 7 to 10 days. Most patients return to light activity within 48 hours. However, full healing requires 4 to 6 weeks for final alignment.

  • Surgical technique: Surgeons adjust eye muscles through tiny conjunctival incisions using fine, self-dissolving stitches.
  • Anaesthesia safety: Specialist anaesthetists provide tailored sedation for both paediatric and adult patients.
  • Hospital stay: Operations are standard day procedures with patients discharged shortly after waking.
  • Mandatory timeframe: Patients must remain in-country for 4 weeks for critical post-operative alignment checks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Basic surgery costs from $2,800. However, choosing adjustable sutures allows surgeons to fine-tune alignment after the initial procedure. Major university hospitals like Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) handle 32,000+ operations annually. This offers higher safety for complex adult cases.

Patient Consensus: Expect pink tears and a gritty sensation for the first day, followed by significant improvement within 6 days. Regular check-ups are vital as alignment settles. Sticking to the full 4-week recovery period in South Korea ensures the best outcome.

Why is South Korea a good choice for strabismus treatment?

South Korea is a premier destination for strabismus treatment. It combines surgical precision with digital safety systems. Specialist centres in Seoul perform thousands of procedures annually. They follow Joint Commission International (JCI) standards. These set high safety benchmarks for paediatric and complex adult cases.

  • Technological edge: Seoul National University Bundang Hospital uses the BESTcare digital system for surgical precision.
  • Surgical volume: Leading hospitals like Severance Hospital perform 40,000+ operations annually. This gives them vast clinical experience.
  • Accredited facilities: Most major institutions hold Joint Commission International (JCI) or ISO accreditation for safety.
  • Clear pricing: Surgery typically costs from $2,800 to $5,200. This offers 33% savings vs Australia.
  • Patient logistics: Asan Medical Center provides personal coordinators and free airport transfers for international patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many overlook the timeline, South Korean clinics mandate a four-week follow-up to monitor muscle alignment. Booking a 4–6 week stay in Seoul allows necessary pre-op testing and recovery checks. This is vital for patients seeking lasting results over $4,600 Australian private costs.

Patient Consensus: Patients find great value in Seoul clinics that specialise in adult strabismus. These clinics often combine surgery with vision therapy. They stress the importance of staying for the full four-week check-up so their eye alignment is stable before flying home.

Do South Korean hospitals offer digital services for international patients having strabismus treatment?

South Korean hospitals provide integrated digital services for international patients undergoing strabismus treatment. Leading Seoul facilities use telemedicine for pre-operative consultations and digital imaging for surgical planning. These systems are supported by JCI-accredited standards. They enable remote post-operative follow-up and electronic medical record access for coordinated care.

  • Telemedicine consultations: Surgeons use remote video platforms for initial diagnostics and post-surgery checks.
  • Electronic systems: Seoul National University Bundang Hospital uses BESTcare to improve surgical safety.
  • Digital surgical planning: Severance Hospital employs digital imaging to enhance eye muscle alignment accuracy.
  • International coordination: Specialised departments manage digital documentation and provide English-speaking personal coordinators.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer digital booking, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital is South Korea's first fully digital hospital. Their smart systems track every step from diagnosis to recovery. This is vital for precise eye surgeries where millimetre-perfect alignment is required.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that major Korean hospitals provide dedicated English-speaking coordinators and online appointment systems. This digital approach makes arranging surgical care from Australia straightforward and well-coordinated.
