How Much Does Retinal detachment surgery Cost in Spain?

Retinal detachment surgery in Spain typically costs from $5,000 to $8,000. The final price depends on the surgical technique, facility tier, and case complexity. Patients save approximately 64% compared to the US, where the average cost is $18,000. Standard quotes usually cover the operating room, anesthesia, and initial post-operative follow-up visits.

  • Surgical technique: Vitrectomy or scleral buckling often adds 20-30% to the base price.
  • Complexity level: Severe cases requiring extended hospitalization or ICU fees increase costs significantly.
  • Facility location: Prices in Barcelona and Madrid typically run higher than in regional hubs.
  • Clinic tier: High-end private hospitals often include luxury amenities and personalized medical services.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing JCI-accredited facilities ensures safety standards while maintaining value. Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona remains a top choice due to its high-volume surgical expertise. Clinica Universidad de Navarra offers competitive pricing, typically starting around $3,800. For international patients, Quirónsalud Marbella provides specialized care in a major tourist destination. High-end packages at Madrid-based hospitals may reach approximately $20,100 for very complex cases.

Factors affecting Retinal detachment surgery cost in Spain

Cost variables to consider:

Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.
About Bookimed service

FAQ about Retinal detachment surgery in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is Spain a good place for retinal detachment surgery?

Spain is a top global destination for retinal detachment surgery, offering a 85% to 95% success rate. The country features JCI-accredited facilities and world-renowned vitreoretinal specialists. Patients benefit from advanced technologies like the Constellation Vision System and rapid access to private surgical care.

  • Surgeon expertise: Specialists like Dr. Ferran Mascaró at Centro Médico Teknon manage complex cases.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize pneumatic retinopexy and vitrectomy for high-precision retinal reattachment.
  • Accredited facilities: Top centers like Clinica Universidad de Navarra hold prestigious JCI accreditation.
  • High volume: Leading Spanish hospitals perform over 6,000 surgeries annually, ensuring deep clinical experience.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks 3rd globally in our market data for medical travel, often due to high-capacity centers. While many seek Barcelona for its celebrity-status clinics, Pamplona’s Clinica Universidad de Navarra was actually the first in Spain to secure JCI accreditation. This academic environment often provides more conservative, evidence-based surgical paths that can be safer for complex retinal tears.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize finding a dedicated vitreoretinal surgeon rather than a general ophthalmologist for better outcomes. They often note that vision recovery is a gradual process taking weeks, requiring patience during the healing phase.

Is retinal detachment surgery an emergency in Spain?

Retinal detachment surgery in Spain is a critical medical emergency requiring immediate intervention. Specialized ophthalmology departments in JCI-accredited hospitals provide 24/7 care to prevent irreversible vision loss. Surgeons must reattach the retina quickly, particularly while the macula remains unaffected, to preserve central sight.

  • Urgent diagnosis: Centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional offer 24/7 emergency ophthalmic diagnostic services.
  • Surgical techniques: Clinics utilize pars plana vitrectomy or scleral buckling to seal retinal tears.
  • Specialist expertise: Chief specialists like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora manage complex ocular and orbital cases.
  • Quality standards: Top Spanish hospitals maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation for safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Spain ranks as a top global destination, emergency retina coverage varies by facility. Data shows Clinica Universidad de Navarra was the first JCI-accredited hospital in Spain. Choosing such institutions ensures immediate access to the advanced imaging and surgical vitreoretinal teams required for same-day emergency reattachment.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that any delay significantly worsens visual outcomes if the macula becomes involved. They recommend pre-identifying a retina-capable center in Spain before travel to ensure immediate access to care.

What types of retinal detachment surgery are performed in Spain?

Retinal detachment surgery in Spain features advanced microsurgical techniques including vitrectomy, scleral buckling, and pneumatic retinopexy. Specialized centers utilize microincisions smaller than 0.5 millimeters to repair tears. Surgeons often combine these methods with laser photocoagulation to secure the retina and prevent future detachment.

  • Vitrectomy procedure: Surgeons remove vitreous gel to relieve retinal traction using micro-incisions.
  • Scleral buckling: A flexible band is placed around the eye to reappose the retina.
  • Pneumatic retinopexy: Gas bubbles are injected to push the retina back into position.
  • Laser photocoagulation: Brief 20-minute sessions seal small holes before full detachment occurs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s top ophthalmology departments are integrated within multi-specialty hubs like Centro Médico Teknon or Hospital Ruber Internacional. These clinics offer 24/7 specialized coverage which is vital since speed is critical to safeguard central vision. Choosing a JCI-accredited facility in Barcelona or Madrid ensures access to specific equipment needed for complex hydraulic reattachments.

Patient Consensus: Success varies by case complexity, and the 24/7 face-down recovery for 3 weeks is often the most challenging aspect. Patients emphasize that immediate action is necessary to preserve sight, even though pain typically subsides within days.

How is the surgery performed in Spain?

Retinal detachment surgery in Spain uses advanced microsurgical techniques in Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facilities. Surgeons primarily perform vitrectomies, scleral buckling, or laser-based repairs under general anesthesia. Spanish ophthalmology centers provide rapid response times for these time-critical procedures to ensure optimal visual outcomes.

  • Available techniques: Surgeons utilize vitrectomy, laser therapy, scleral buckle, and gas tamponade methods.
  • Specialized expertise: Chief specialists like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora lead dedicated ophthalmology departments.
  • Advanced infrastructure: Facilities like Centro Médico Teknon offer high-profile care with JCI-certified standards.
  • Clinical approach: Procedures treat urgent retinal holes through surgical or laser-based combination approaches.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic laser repairs for retinal holes take only 20 minutes, complex vitrectomies in Spain are more common. Major centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional or Teknon perform thousands of surgeries annually. This high volume ensures surgeons maintain precision for delicate reattachment work.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that retinal detachment is treated as an emergency in Spain. They report a challenging recovery involving strict face-down positioning and gradual vision improvement over several weeks.

What is the recovery process like?

Recovery from retinal detachment surgery in Spain focuses on physical healing and strict ocular hygiene within JCI-accredited facilities. Patients must manage inflammation while strictly following positioning protocols to ensure the retina reattaches correctly. Most patients regain significant visual clarity within 3 to 4 months of the procedure.

  • Visual progression: Initial vision is often very low after surgery. Improvement begins after 3 weeks.
  • Positioning requirements: Gas bubble injections require strict face-down positioning 24/7 for several weeks.
  • Pain management: Sharp discomfort typically peaks during the first 3 days. It usually resolves quickly.
  • Outcome expectations: Success depends on detachment severity. Full vision restoration may take 120 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s top ophthalmology centers like Centro Médico Teknon or Ruber Internacional often utilize dual JCI and ISO certifications. This provides a safety cushion for complex vitrectomies. Data across our 83 Spanish clinics shows a high volume of over 4,800 requests. This indicates deep clinical expertise in managing critical recovery tasks like gas bubble absorption.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that success depends on rigorous adherence to the face-down schedule and eye drop routine. While the first 48 hours are difficult, vision typically returns steadily once the gas bubble dissipates.
