How Much Does Corneal tattooing Cost in Istanbul?

Corneal tattooing in Istanbul typically costs from $3,000 to $6,200. The total depends on the tattooing technique, such as manual needle or femtosecond laser assistance. Patients save around 67% compared to the US, where the average cost is $4,800. Local packages usually include pre-operative exams, anesthesia, surgeon fees, and specialized medical-grade pigments.

  • Laser-assisted technique: Fees reflect the use of femtosecond lasers for precise pigment placement.
  • Therapeutic tattooing: Pricing covers masking corneal scars or leucomas to improve appearance.
  • Clinical setting: Costs vary between private practices and larger hospitals with international accreditations.
  • Consultation fees: Initial exams and baseline corneal topography often contribute to the total.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul is Turkey's hub for advanced ophthalmic technology, housing more specialized eye centers than any other city. Choosing a surgeon with extensive reconstructive experience is key. Dr. Ahmet Satici, for instance, has performed over 20,000 eye procedures. Clinics here often hold JCI accreditation, ensuring high quality for specialized cosmetic and therapeutic cases at more accessible prices than in the US.

It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

My surgeon's thoroughness was notable
My surgeon's thoroughness was notable. He tested my eyes extensively before we confirmed the final plan for my cataract surgery on both eyes, which were treated a few days apart. The clinic has stayed in touch. My recovery is progressing about as expected. The only extra cost was for eye drops. If you need sedation, I would advise bringing your own. PS. Please bring your sun glasses too.

My biggest shock was that the initial agreement was completely different from the reality. After I arrived, I was forced to accept new prices and couldn’t go to another clinic. I had Botox injections for my forehead and frown lines, and of course it’s still too early to judge the results. That said, the clinic itself was good and the doctor took the time to carefully mark the injection points, which I really appreciated. However, my experience with the staff was extremely poor. One must also take into account the additional costs of accommodation, flights and transport. For this reason, based on this experience, I would not recommend that any patient travel to Turkey for treatment.

What I particularly valued was the continuity of care from the surgeon
If you're researching laser eye surgery, the small details of the process are what matter. I opted for the TransPRK procedure. The clinic's protocol involved operating on each of my eyes on separate days, which I viewed as a careful and methodical approach to the surgery. What I particularly valued was the continuity of care from the surgeon. They personally handled every single one of my checkups, from the first consultation to all the follow-up appointments, ensuring I was seeing the same expert throughout. That was important. As I'm still in the early recovery phase, having a clear aftercare guide has been essential, and the one provided was very comprehensive. From a practical standpoint, every aspect of the service, including the surgeon, the support staff, and the clinic environment, was well-executed and professional.

I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process
Communication was great. I was picked up from the hotel, transfered to the hospital, and accompanied by Adam (translator) through the journey. He knew exactly the intake process and what they would want. He was well organized and very friendly. The consultant spoke English and was very calm, and professional. I had femto iLasik which was without complication. Pre-op my prescription was -7. Day 0 post op, I could still see but with blurry vision. Day 1 post op, my vision is now 20/20. But eyes feel gritty but hopefully will ease in a few days. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process. I would highly recommend Turkey for medical tourism. It's affordable and a beautiful clean city to visit as well. Stupendous experience.

The recovery so far is better than expected
If you're considering this procedure, my main advice is to bring a physical card for payment. I used Apple Pay, which had a low transaction limit and forced me to make about 20 separate payments to cover the cost. Medically, everything was straightforward. I had lens replacement in both eyes on the same day, and the recovery so far is better than expected. my doctor, who took the time to explain which technique suited my eyes and was very honest about the realistic vision outcome I could anticipate. I must also say a huge thank you to the night nurse ( mirve ) I think was her name she was outstanding and took good care of me . It was reassuring that there were no additional expenses. The one thing to note is that there was little contact from the clinic after I left, but the core service was solid.
I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment from all staff especially mirve who looked after me through the night she came every hour to do my drops until I asked her to come at 6.00 in morning she gave me an extension number incase I needed anything before six , which I did at 5.00am she immediately came to my room and sorted my issue the operation went perfect and after only two days I can see better than I have in the last 18 years 👌👍👌 thank you everyone

I recommend bookimed
My husband and I traveled from New Zealand to both get eye lens replacement surgery. From the start we have had print and effient communication. With every question answered. We were picked up from the airport, taken to hotel, then the same day at our request taken to the hospital for our appointment. Two days later we were in having eye surgery again with pick ups and drop offs. We were met at the hospital entrance, by bookimed.com translators and hospital translators they were amazing every day, in every way. The doctors were provisional and onto it, explaining every detail, and answering all our questions. Our procedure went very well and we are very happy with the outcome and how amazing we can see, no longer with glasses or contacts. I recommend bookimed.com to everyone. Vikki

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Memorial Şişli Clinic
I can wholeheartedly recommend the Memorial Şişli Clinic. I underwent a deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) on my left eye, and I now feel better than I had expected. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the coordinating doctor, Sergey, and Dr Abdallah ÖZCAYA for their expertise and responsible approach. I particularly remember how Dr ÖZCAYA personally checked on me after the operation — this gave me confidence and peace of mind. The clinic was always available, and there were no additional costs. A special thank you to the interpreter, Daniela, for her excellent translation and constant help with communication.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Medical Coordinator Serhii Kravetskyi for his prompt arrangements for my treatment at the Memorial Şişli Clinic. To Professor Dr Abdullah ÖZKAYA for his high level of professionalism and the successful keratoplasty operation. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life
I’d like to leave a positive review of the Dünyagöz clinic and Bookimed, the company that helped me find this clinic. First and foremost, I’d like to highlight the high standard of service at the Dünyagöz clinic. Upon arrival, I was promptly met and immediately provided with an interpreter. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the language barrier — both Russian and English are available here. The interpreter accompanies you at every stage: from the initial consultation right through to the operation itself. This is very important, as eye care requires a precise understanding of all your concerns and the doctor’s recommendations. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the wards. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with any queries. Another definite plus was the full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, so you don’t have to worry about practical matters and can focus entirely on your treatment and recovery. I would like to express my special thanks to Bookimed. Throughout the entire process, you are supported by a personal coordinator who helps organise your trip, answers questions and provides all the necessary details. My coordinator was Anastasia, and I am sincerely grateful to her for her support. She was available practically 24/7 and even helped with matters not directly related to the clinic. It was on her recommendation that I chose Dünyagöz. What’s more, Anastasia herself had previously had her vision corrected at the same clinic, so she was able to share her personal experience. Now we are both delighted with the result and can confidently recommend this clinic to others. If you’ve been thinking about vision correction for a while, there’s no need to be afraid or put off the decision. After the operation, you realise you should have done it much sooner. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life. I wish everyone good luck, good health and nothing but positive experiences with their new, clear vision!

What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option
What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option. He performed the surgery personally on both of my eyes the same day. My recovery is going about as expected, and the clinic provided a clear aftercare guide. Just be prepared for the other costs. Of course, I had to pay for my flight, a two-week hotel stay, and also a required $150 medical insurance policy on top of the clinic's price.

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding
My Experience with Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul I recently had surgery in Turkey, and I must say, my coordinator Olya was an incredible professional. She was with me every step of the way, always available 24/7, a true angel! Thanks to her, I chose this hospital and Turkey instead of the Czech Republic. Olya’s support was crucial in my decision, and I’m forever grateful to her. Special thanks to our guide Said, who was always available, no matter the time of day or night. He helped resolve every issue between me and the clinic, providing a smooth experience throughout the process. The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding. From the initial consultation to the operation itself, everything went smoothly, quickly, and painlessly. He’s truly a high-level professional who’s there to treat patients rather than make money off them. I deeply appreciate all of his care and expertise. A week has passed since the surgery, and I feel good, though my vision hasn’t fully returned yet. However, this is normal, and I’m confident that it will improve over time. I can confidently recommend Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul. Cons: The main downside of my experience was with the hospital’s billing department. They requested payment in cash, but we were not informed about this before traveling to Turkey. If you want to pay by card, they charge a 20% commission, which is an unreasonably high fee. I’d also like to mention someone named Timur (I don’t remember his last name). In front of patients, he was speaking in Russian with a female colleague, assuming we didn’t understand the language. They said something like, “People are so stupid; it’s hard to work with such dumb people.” This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in the presence of patients. Such conversations seriously undermine the clinic’s reputation and are inappropriate in a professional healthcare setting. Therefore, I strongly advise anyone planning a visit to clarify all financial and organizational details
About Bookimed service

The process of selecting the clinic and arranging everything was smooth and well-organized, thanks to her. I highly recommend their services for anyone seeking medical care abroad.

Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating
The staff at Bookimed from the initial off-set answered all my questions, queries promptly. I was nervous with feelings swaying about my treatment. Upon arrival in Turkey from the airport transfer onwards, I have got to say all doubts were a contrast as to what I witnessed and to the treatment I received. On the first day the hotel staff were welcoming by the way I stayed local to VMH University Hospital Istanbul Besyol, at a budget I chose the World Point Hotel 700 meters away (Ramada Hotel was even closer.) I'm not arguing with what I paid, hygiene, cleanliness, manners, availability of staff, room, I got and witnessed. The transfer to the Hospital l walked with my translator, who put all my nerves and questions I had to bed, I must say I felt alot better. On arrival I was astounded, the smell of freshness, clean, I had to ask the translator how many floors 9 was the reply, Big, busy different ethnicities different cultures, vast array of people from all parts of the world, I felt comfortable. The level of equipment, the Doctors, staff members would not go amiss in any Country. The treatment I received the interaction which you have with the Doctor was of great effect to me as the knowledge about my treatment gained was instrumental in what was to happen. Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of surgery abroad of any kind to get in touch with them, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. Thank you.

FAQ about treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is corneal tattooing in Istanbul safe?

Corneal tattooing in Istanbul is safe when performed by board-certified ophthalmologists using femtosecond laser technology in JCI-accredited facilities. Success relies on medical-grade pigments and specialized surgeons like those at Medipol University Pendik Hospital, which treats over 350,000 patients each year using the latest protocols.

  • Surgeon expertise: Professors in Istanbul often have over 30 years of experience in refractive surgery.
  • Safety technology: Clinics use femtosecond lasers to create precise corneal pockets without open surgery.
  • Accreditation standards: Top facilities are accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and Temos International Healthcare Accreditation.
  • Pigment quality: Safe procedures require biocompatible, medical-grade pigments rather than standard body-art tattoo inks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While patients choose Istanbul for cost, the real value lies in surgical volume. Surgeons like Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed over 25,000 operations. This extensive experience often results in better complication management than in lower-volume Western clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that verifying the specific surgeon and clinic license is more important than the city location. They warn against high-volume cosmetic centers that may not have complete long-term aftercare plans for international travelers.

What is corneal tattooing, and why is it performed in Istanbul?

Corneal tattooing is also called keratopigmentation. It uses biocompatible pigments that are injected into the cornea with a femtosecond laser. This can restore the eye's appearance or change its color. Istanbul is a global hub for this procedure. The city offers specialized ophthalmologists, JCI-accredited clinics, and ocular technology at competitive rates.

  • Procedure types: Surgeons perform two kinds: therapeutic concealment for scars and elective cosmetic eye color changes.
  • Technology used: Clinics use femtosecond lasers and corneal topography to place pigment with microscopic precision.
  • Specialized expertise: Surgeons like Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed over 25,000 procedures at accredited centers.
  • Accreditation standards: Leading facilities hold international certifications from JCI and the Turkish Medical Association.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Istanbul is known for affordability, the real value lies in surgical volume. Surgeons like Dr. Ahmet Satici treat over 8,000 patients annually. This high volume is paired with diagnostic tools like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). The combination lets surgeons handle the cornea's delicate layers with high precision.

Patient Consensus: Patients say the results can be life-changing. However, recovery often involves significant light sensitivity for several months. They recommend choosing surgeons with an ophthalmology background rather than general aesthetic providers. This is because the procedure carries high risks.

Are the results of a corneal tattoo in Istanbul permanent?

Corneal tattooing in Istanbul is designed to be permanent. Biocompatible mineral pigments are sealed within the corneal stroma using femtosecond lasers. The ink remains for life. However, about 20 percent of patients eventually seek minor laser touch-ups. This restores peak color vibrancy.

  • Method of permanence: Surgeons use femtosecond lasers to create tunnels, sealing pigments deep inside stable tissue.
  • Pigment quality: Clinics use medical-grade micronized oxides like titanium dioxide, which offer long-term biocompatibility.
  • Potential fading: About 20–30% of patients experience minor fading, which may require laser-assisted color intensity restoration.
  • Reversibility limits: The procedure is an irreversible commitment, though specialists can sometimes lighten or mask pigments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: The ink is technically permanent, but the word “permanence” can be misleading. Pigments settle, so the crispness may fade. Surgeons like Prof. Yusuf Yildirim, a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology, emphasize that the ink won’t wash away. However, the initial crispness can blur as the eye ages.

Patient Consensus: Patients typically find the results long-lasting. However, significant light sensitivity is a common trade-off. Patients who have had the procedure report that colors can shift. The pigments may turn blue-gray with age.

How is the corneal tattooing procedure performed in Istanbul?

Corneal tattooing in Istanbul is a precise ophthalmic procedure called keratopigmentation. Surgeons use femtosecond lasers to create a micro-tunnel in the mid-stromal layer. Then, surgeons inject biocompatible pigments. These pigments mask scars or change eye color. The central visual axis stays clear.

  • Anesthesia method: Surgeons apply strong topical anesthetic drops to numb the eye surface completely.
  • Laser precision: A femtosecond laser creates a pocket at 200–350 microns depth without opening the eye.
  • Pigment implantation: Micro-cannulas introduce micronized mineral or organic pigments into the corneal channel.
  • Post-operative care: Surgeons apply a protective bandage contact lens to help with initial surface healing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul clinics like Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer's practice offer high safety levels due to JCI accreditation. These centers treat up to 20,000 patients annually using femtosecond technology. This high volume ensures surgeons maintain precision for stromal pocket creation. The procedure typically costs $3,000 to $6,200.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that this is a serious medical surgery. It involves anesthetic drops and metal eye shields. Most advise prioritizing an ophthalmologist's surgical experience over marketing. They also recommend a clear follow-up plan for light sensitivity.
