How Much Does Lumpectomy Cost in Istanbul?

Lumpectomy in Istanbul typically costs from $3,200 to $6,500. Total costs depend on the surgical technique, tumor size, and hospital accreditation level. Patients save around 79% compared to the US, where this procedure costs $14,000 on average. Packages usually include preoperative tests, surgeon fees, anesthesia, and one to two nights of hospital stay.

  • Axillary lymph node excision: Standard addition if cancer has spread to nearby nodes.
  • Oncoplastic reconstruction: Combines tumor removal with immediate reshaping for better cosmetic results.
  • Clinic accreditation: JCI-accredited facilities often charge a premium for verified safety standards.
  • Additional diagnostics: Costs increase for intraoperative frozen section analysis or specialized tumor marking.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul serves as Turkey's primary hub for multidisciplinary breast cancer care, concentrating more JCI-accredited facilities than Ankara or Izmir. Patients find unique value at centers like Anadolu Medical Center, which is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Hospital. Specialized surgeons, such as Nuri Alper Sahbaz, offer rare European Board-certified expertise in endocrine and breast surgery. High-volume centers often bundle preoperative consultations and HEPA-filtered recovery rooms into the baseline price.

I am confident I am going to beat this breast tumor with the help of the wonderful care given at Hisar Intercontinental Hospital
I was really nervous about a new breast lump that developed. I reached out to Book I med and explained my situation. I was directed to Hisar Intercontinental Hospital. They did biopsy, ultrasound and PET scan. Although I wanted surgery, doctor explained it wasn't in my best interest and recommended medication instead. Doctors were careful to come up with plan, they didn't rush to make decisions. I had a medical coordinator who assisted in transportation to and from hospital and coordinating tests and doctor visits. I was also assigned an interpreter for Turkish to English. They were both wonderful and it was nice to have assistance and smiling faces when I arrived. They always took time to listen to concerns and answer questions. I met with 2 doctors, a breast cancer surgeon and oncologist. They both were professional and friendly. They met with a tumor board of physicians to discuss my plan.I feel like I got professional care and good treatment plan. The hospital was clean and modern. They did a good job with the tests, I didn't feel any pain from the doctor who did my biopsy. Believe me when you have something as scary as a breast lump you want to be in good hands.I paid for each test and medication individually with credit card. I was told the cost before each purchase. Even though the whole bill wasn't cheap, it's much much lower cost than I could get in United States. As a self pay patient I am glad for that also. So overall even though I was struggling with something really bad(tumor) I feel like I got great and professional care at a decent price. I would truly recommend this to anyone. And Turkey is such a beautiful country with friendly people. There is hidden artwork everywhere. So even though I am going through this ordeal being in beautiful Turkey makes it not so bad. The food here is really good and cheap. I'm staying in Old city which has tons of Cafe restaurants. In your spare time just sitting at a Cafe and watching the myriad of people walking by is fun. I am confident I am going to beat this breast tumor with the help of the wonderful care given at Hisar Intercontinental Hospital.

I would like to express my gratitude to my attending doctor, surgeon, my coordinator, all nurses and interpreters
I was treated for breast cancer, I liked everything, I had chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, and now every 3 months I have check-ups. I would like to express my gratitude to my attending doctor, surgeon, my coordinator, all nurses and interpreters, I remember when I first arrived, I was so confused, panic and fear. But as soon as the treatment started, everything went in its own way, I had to go through everything and I am glad I did. Thank you!

FAQ about treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which hospitals in Istanbul are accredited and recommended for breast cancer surgery?

Istanbul has several Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospitals that specialize in breast cancer surgery. The top recommended hospitals include Anadolu Medical Center, Memorial Healthcare Group, and Hisar Intercontinental Hospital. They offer multidisciplinary tumor boards and oncoplastic techniques like sentinel lymph node biopsy.

  • Anadolu Medical Center: It is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine and holds OECI oncology certification.
  • Memorial Şişli Hospital: First Turkish hospital with JCI accreditation, featuring specialized breast tumor boards.
  • Hisar Intercontinental Hospital: It offers MR-LINAC technology and specialized care from surgeons with US experience.
  • Hospital stay: Typical lumpectomy recovery requires 1–2 days of monitored hospitalization in Istanbul.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics may offer breast surgery. But prioritize centers like Memorial Bahçelievler, which hold LEED Platinum status. This certification creates a healing environment with 97% less noise in imaging areas. High-volume centers like Medipol Mega serve over 1 million patients each year. This volume builds extensive surgical expertise in complex oncology cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients value hospitals that use a medical board to coordinate care and provide personal interpreters. Patient stories show the value of choosing a specialized oncology department. Compared to a general clinic, patients report having painless biopsies and clear treatment plans.

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul after a lumpectomy before flying home?

Most patients should stay in Istanbul for 7–14 days after a lumpectomy before flying home. This time includes a mandatory post-op check-up. It gives the wound time to heal properly. It also lowers the risk of seroma or deep vein thrombosis during the flight.

  • Procedure complexity: Simple tissue removal requires 7–10 days; lymph node biopsies often require 14 days.
  • Hospital stay: Expect to spend 1–2 days in the clinic for initial monitoring and care.
  • Follow-up timing: Mandatory surgical reviews typically occur between days 7 and 10 for suture checks.
  • Travel safety: Long-haul flights increase clot risks; surgeons may advise waiting up to 6 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: A 1-day hospital stay is common at Memorial Şişli or Hisar Hospital. But what matters most is the follow-up. Data shows that surgeons like Dr. Nuri Alper Sahbaz wait until wound edges are stable. Then they clear international flights. He has performed over 2,000 operations. If your procedure includes axillary dissection, plan for a full 14-day stay. That way, drains can be removed safely before you board.

Patient Consensus: Patients say: you may feel ready to travel after a few days. But still book wheelchair assistance at Istanbul airports. It's essential. The biggest issue is handling heavy luggage, not the flight itself. You'll need help arranged ahead of time.

What is a lumpectomy and how is it performed in Istanbul?

Lumpectomy is a breast-conserving surgery. It removes tumors with a healthy tissue margin to preserve breast appearance. In Istanbul, Joint Commission International-accredited hospitals use oncoplastic techniques and wire localization. These methods maintain symmetry and ensure clean pathology margins for early-stage breast cancer patients.

  • Oncoplastic approach: Surgeons combine tumor removal with plastic surgery techniques to prevent breast deformation.
  • Precise localization: Radiologists use ultrasound or mammogram-guided wires to pinpoint non-palpable malignant lesions.
  • Sentinel node biopsy: Specialists like Dr. Murat Atay at Istanbul Florence Nightingale perform lymphatic mapping.
  • Hospital stay: Most procedures require 1-2 days in the hospital for monitoring and initial recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Base lumpectomy prices in Istanbul average _op_286_city_107$3,000. More complex procedures, like segmental mastectomies with axillary dissection or sentinel lymph node excision, cost more. At Memorial Şişli Hospital, these typically range from $9,200 to $14,400. Choosing a surgeon with European Board of Surgery certification helps make sure oncology expertise meets international standards. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nuri Alper Sahbaz is one such surgeon.

Patient Consensus: Patients often find the underarm area more sensitive than the breast incision. This is especially true after node biopsies. Recovery is manageable with supportive bras and front-opening shirts. However, swelling often peaks one week after surgery.
