How Much Does Pupilloplasty Cost in Turkey?

Pupilloplasty in Turkey typically costs between $1,500 and $2,700. The final price depends on the technique used, the complexity of the pupil deformity, and whether the procedure is combined with other surgeries. In the US, clinical alternatives average $5,500, meaning patients saving around 62% by choosing Turkish specialize centers. Standard care includes pre-operative diagnostic imaging, surgeon fees, local anesthesia, and follow-up eye examinations.

  • Procedure complexity: Repairing traumatic injuries or congenital defects often requires more intricate suturing.
  • Combined surgeries: Patients often save 20-30% when combining pupilloplasty with cataract or eyelid surgery.
  • Technological precision: High-end clinics in Istanbul use advanced corneal mapping to plan the reconstruction.
  • Clinic accreditation: Facilities holding JCI or Temos International certifications may have slightly higher base rates.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a surgeon with high surgical volumes is the smartest move for pupilloplasty. Specialists like Professor Ahmet Satici and Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed over 20,000 procedures each. Many top Istanbul clinics, like the Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer center, are JCI-accredited single-specialty hubs. These facilities focus exclusively on ophthalmology, offering focused expertise and advanced technology at a mid-range price point.

It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

My biggest shock was that the initial agreement was completely different from the reality. After I arrived, I was forced to accept new prices and couldn’t go to another clinic. I had Botox injections for my forehead and frown lines, and of course it’s still too early to judge the results. That said, the clinic itself was good and the doctor took the time to carefully mark the injection points, which I really appreciated. However, my experience with the staff was extremely poor. One must also take into account the additional costs of accommodation, flights and transport. For this reason, based on this experience, I would not recommend that any patient travel to Turkey for treatment.

The recovery so far is better than expected
If you're considering this procedure, my main advice is to bring a physical card for payment. I used Apple Pay, which had a low transaction limit and forced me to make about 20 separate payments to cover the cost. Medically, everything was straightforward. I had lens replacement in both eyes on the same day, and the recovery so far is better than expected. my doctor, who took the time to explain which technique suited my eyes and was very honest about the realistic vision outcome I could anticipate. I must also say a huge thank you to the night nurse ( mirve ) I think was her name she was outstanding and took good care of me . It was reassuring that there were no additional expenses. The one thing to note is that there was little contact from the clinic after I left, but the core service was solid.
I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment from all staff especially mirve who looked after me through the night she came every hour to do my drops until I asked her to come at 6.00 in morning she gave me an extension number incase I needed anything before six , which I did at 5.00am she immediately came to my room and sorted my issue the operation went perfect and after only two days I can see better than I have in the last 18 years 👌👍👌 thank you everyone

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Memorial Şişli Clinic
I can wholeheartedly recommend the Memorial Şişli Clinic. I underwent a deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) on my left eye, and I now feel better than I had expected. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the coordinating doctor, Sergey, and Dr Abdallah ÖZCAYA for their expertise and responsible approach. I particularly remember how Dr ÖZCAYA personally checked on me after the operation — this gave me confidence and peace of mind. The clinic was always available, and there were no additional costs. A special thank you to the interpreter, Daniela, for her excellent translation and constant help with communication.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Medical Coordinator Serhii Kravetskyi for his prompt arrangements for my treatment at the Memorial Şişli Clinic. To Professor Dr Abdullah ÖZKAYA for his high level of professionalism and the successful keratoplasty operation. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process
Communication was great. I was picked up from the hotel, transfered to the hospital, and accompanied by Adam (translator) through the journey. He knew exactly the intake process and what they would want. He was well organized and very friendly. The consultant spoke English and was very calm, and professional. I had femto iLasik which was without complication. Pre-op my prescription was -7. Day 0 post op, I could still see but with blurry vision. Day 1 post op, my vision is now 20/20. But eyes feel gritty but hopefully will ease in a few days. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process. I would highly recommend Turkey for medical tourism. It's affordable and a beautiful clean city to visit as well. Stupendous experience.

Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life
I’d like to leave a positive review of the Dünyagöz clinic and Bookimed, the company that helped me find this clinic. First and foremost, I’d like to highlight the high standard of service at the Dünyagöz clinic. Upon arrival, I was promptly met and immediately provided with an interpreter. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the language barrier — both Russian and English are available here. The interpreter accompanies you at every stage: from the initial consultation right through to the operation itself. This is very important, as eye care requires a precise understanding of all your concerns and the doctor’s recommendations. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the wards. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with any queries. Another definite plus was the full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, so you don’t have to worry about practical matters and can focus entirely on your treatment and recovery. I would like to express my special thanks to Bookimed. Throughout the entire process, you are supported by a personal coordinator who helps organise your trip, answers questions and provides all the necessary details. My coordinator was Anastasia, and I am sincerely grateful to her for her support. She was available practically 24/7 and even helped with matters not directly related to the clinic. It was on her recommendation that I chose Dünyagöz. What’s more, Anastasia herself had previously had her vision corrected at the same clinic, so she was able to share her personal experience. Now we are both delighted with the result and can confidently recommend this clinic to others. If you’ve been thinking about vision correction for a while, there’s no need to be afraid or put off the decision. After the operation, you realise you should have done it much sooner. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life. I wish everyone good luck, good health and nothing but positive experiences with their new, clear vision!

What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option
What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option. He performed the surgery personally on both of my eyes the same day. My recovery is going about as expected, and the clinic provided a clear aftercare guide. Just be prepared for the other costs. Of course, I had to pay for my flight, a two-week hotel stay, and also a required $150 medical insurance policy on top of the clinic's price.

I recommend bookimed
My husband and I traveled from New Zealand to both get eye lens replacement surgery. From the start we have had print and effient communication. With every question answered. We were picked up from the airport, taken to hotel, then the same day at our request taken to the hospital for our appointment. Two days later we were in having eye surgery again with pick ups and drop offs. We were met at the hospital entrance, by bookimed.com translators and hospital translators they were amazing every day, in every way. The doctors were provisional and onto it, explaining every detail, and answering all our questions. Our procedure went very well and we are very happy with the outcome and how amazing we can see, no longer with glasses or contacts. I recommend bookimed.com to everyone. Vikki

My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range
My biggest worry before getting LASIK was the risk of side effects like long-term dry eyes or glare. I can honestly say my recovery has been very straightforward so far. I’ve had no dryness at all, and even better, I haven’t noticed any halos or glare in low light, which was a huge relief for me. My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range. Overall, the whole process was solid. Of course, everyone’s experience will vary, and when I was researching beforehand, I saw many people discussing side effects that I personally did not experience at all. I had the LASIK treatment rather than SMILE, so this review is based on my own LASIK experience. Make sure to do all your research beforehand. If your main concern is whether the clinic is good to get the procedure done, then in simple terms, yes, it is. Like any place, there are things outside of the actual surgery that could be improved, but I would recommend looking through reviews carefully and moving forward with what you personally feel comfortable and confident with.
The staff were good, the room provided was also great, and the surgery went very fast and smoothly with no issues at all. Everyone was kind and helpful throughout the experience. The staff who brought the food and checked in were especially nice. There was one individual in particular I’m not sure of his name, but he spoke English and was incredibly sweet, always checking in and asking if everything was okay. He definitely made the whole experience much better and more comfortable.
One area for improvement would be communication, as English seems to be limited mainly to the coordinator and doctor . If you need to ask other staff or reception for help or information, it can sometimes be a little difficult to navigate. I would recommend having a translation app available and making sure you have your in-hospital coordinator’s contact number handy, as following things up through reception or other staff is not easy . There was also a slight issue with payment, so I would recommend having a backup payment method or checking beforehand what to do if the card machine does not work, since payments are handled directly there. This is especially important if you are travelling from abroad, as I travelled from the UK.

The surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease
My biggest concern was the procedure itself and the potential side effects. Fortunately, the surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease. It has now been 15 days since my umbilical cord stem cell treatment. To be honest, I haven’t noticed any changes yet, which is to be expected at this early stage. There is still some pain when I touch the injection site. I’ve been sticking to the post-treatment restrictions most of the time, and the clinic itself was good but not entirely modern, which is why I’ve given it four stars. Overall, it was a good experience and now I just need to be patient.

Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief
What worried me most was the uncertainty and the long search for the causes of my condition. Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief. The doctor immediately explained the possible triggers, which helped me understand the situation. It’s only been 15 days, and I’m still in the early stages of recovery. The pain in my eyes has eased slightly, as has my sensitivity to light. My visual acuity remains unchanged for now, but I realise that this will take time. The whole clinic team worked very smoothly and professionally, which gave me a sense of calm.

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating
The staff at Bookimed from the initial off-set answered all my questions, queries promptly. I was nervous with feelings swaying about my treatment. Upon arrival in Turkey from the airport transfer onwards, I have got to say all doubts were a contrast as to what I witnessed and to the treatment I received. On the first day the hotel staff were welcoming by the way I stayed local to VMH University Hospital Istanbul Besyol, at a budget I chose the World Point Hotel 700 meters away (Ramada Hotel was even closer.) I'm not arguing with what I paid, hygiene, cleanliness, manners, availability of staff, room, I got and witnessed. The transfer to the Hospital l walked with my translator, who put all my nerves and questions I had to bed, I must say I felt alot better. On arrival I was astounded, the smell of freshness, clean, I had to ask the translator how many floors 9 was the reply, Big, busy different ethnicities different cultures, vast array of people from all parts of the world, I felt comfortable. The level of equipment, the Doctors, staff members would not go amiss in any Country. The treatment I received the interaction which you have with the Doctor was of great effect to me as the knowledge about my treatment gained was instrumental in what was to happen. Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of surgery abroad of any kind to get in touch with them, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. Thank you.

FAQ about Pupilloplasty in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Why is pupilloplasty performed?

Pupilloplasty is a surgical procedure performed to reshape, resize, or recenter the pupil to restore visual function and improve eye appearance. It effectively treats light sensitivity, glare, and visual distortions caused by iris trauma, congenital defects, or complications from previous eye surgeries.

  • Visual correction: Eliminates debilitating glare, halos, and double vision by repairing iris defects.
  • Light control: Reduces photophobia by correcting abnormally large or irregular pupils (mydriasis).
  • Structural support: Provides essential stable anchoring for intraocular lenses when natural support is missing.
  • Glaucoma management: Relieves angle-closure glaucoma by pulling iris tissue away from drainage angles.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Analysis of Istanbul clinics shows pupilloplasty is frequently paired with complex cataract or vitreo-retinal surgeries. Surgeons like Prof. Yusuf Yildirim or Muhammet Derda Ozer often perform these combined cases within 15 minutes. This efficiency minimizes local anesthesia time while significantly improving postoperative depth of focus for patients.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report immediate relief from starbursts and halos, significantly improving night driving capabilities. While some minor cosmetic asymmetry may persist, the rapid resolution of painful light sensitivity is considered life-changing.

Is pupilloplasty in Turkey safe?

Pupilloplasty in Turkey is safe when performed by board-certified ophthalmologists at JCI-accredited facilities using advanced iris reconstruction techniques. Success rates remain high due to surgeons like Prof. Yusuf Yildirim and Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer, who have performed over 10,000 to 25,000 eye procedures each.

  • Surgeon expertise: Leading specialists often hold European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) certifications.
  • Clinical standards: Top-tier Istanbul clinics maintain JCI, ISO, and Temos International Healthcare accreditations.
  • Advanced technology: Facilities like Biruni University Hospital utilize specialized diagnostic tools for iris pupillary repairs.
  • Patient volume: High-performing centers manage 2,000 to 20,000 ophthalmology patients annually with low complication rates.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many travelers visit Turkey for LASIK, pupilloplasty requires a higher level of microsurgical specialization found at university hospitals. Data shows that doctors like Prof. Yusuf Yildirim, who holds a Cornea Subspecialty Diploma, offer a safer profile for complex iris reconstructions than general refractive surgeons. Always choose a specialist with documented fellowship training from institutions like Harvard or the Royal College of Surgeons.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of pre-operative iris angiography to ensure a symmetrical result. Those choosing high-volume university clinics report excellent functional outcomes, though many advise budgeting for local follow-up care to monitor long-term healing.

What surgical techniques are used during pupilloplasty?

Surgical pupilloplasty utilizes various suturing and laser techniques to reconstruct the iris and refine the pupils shape. Surgeons commonly employ the single-pass four-throw method or Siepser slipknot for precise closure, while pupil cerclage addresses traumatic dilation by regulating the aperture size through drawstring-style sutures.

  • Siepser slipknot: Uses a single-pass, adjustable 10-0 polypropylene thread for minimally invasive, closed-chamber iris repair.
  • McCannel sutures: Employs a two-needle, mattress-style technique specifically designed to manage complex iris tears and lacerations.
  • Pinhole pupilloplasty: Creates a small central aperture of 1.3–1.5 mm to improve vision by blocking peripheral light.
  • Laser-assisted preparation: Utilizes femtosecond lasers to mark precise suture points, reducing intraoperative bleeding during the procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics often differentiate by combining traditional suturing with advanced diagnostic tools. While many centers focus on standard repairs, specialists like Prof. Yusuf Yildirim at Medipol Acibadem utilize intraoperative gonioscopy to verify iris tension in real-time. This extra step helps prevent pupil capture complications and long-term glaucoma risks.

Patient Consensus: Patients often note that pupillary stability is typically achieved by the one-month checkup. Most emphasize the importance of using prescribed miotic drops and wearing eye shields 24/7 during the first week to ensure the pupil heals in a perfectly round shape.

How long does recovery take?

Pupilloplasty recovery in Turkey typically allows patients to return to desk work within 7 to 10 days. While basic visual improvement occurs in 1 to 4 weeks, full pupil shape stabilization and light sensitivity resolution generally take 2 to 6 months depending on the surgical technique used.

  • Initial healing: Most patients report sharp reductions in sensitivity and discomfort within 3 days.
  • Functional vision: Approximately 80% of functional vision typically returns within 7 days of surgery.
  • Activity restrictions: Physical strain, heavy lifting, and eye rubbing must be avoided for 4 weeks.
  • Medication window: Steroid drops are essential for 4 to 8 weeks to manage inflammation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Turkish clinics like Derda Saglik Hizmetleri shows a trend toward single-suture techniques that prioritize immediate discharge. While these methods minimize surgical downtime, patients should plan for 1 to 2 weeks of screen avoidance. Surgeons like Prof. Yusuf Yildirim, who has performed 10,000+ procedures, emphasize that long-term stability relies heavily on the 6-week drop protocol.

Patient Consensus: Patients often find that while they can drive within 2 weeks, halos at night may persist for 6 weeks. Many suggest tracking symptoms daily, as the initial blurriness usually clears significantly by the second week.

Will my pupil still dilate or constrict after surgery?

Pupils generally retain the ability to dilate and constrict after pupilloplasty in Turkey, provided the iris sphincter muscle remains intact. While some initial stiffness occurs, most patients see a return to normal light reactivity within 1 to 3 months as surgical inflammation subsides.

  • Recovery timeline: Complete normalization of pupil movement typically occurs within 1 to 3 months.
  • Surgical technique: Specialized sutures often preserve the sphincter muscle to maintain natural light response.
  • Temporary effects: Pupils may appear sluggish or unresponsive for 24 hours due to medications.
  • Post-operative care: Surgeons often prescribe steroid drops to reduce inflammation and improve long-term reactivity.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Turkish clinics like Dunyagoz and Medipol shows that surgeons performing over 1,000 eye surgeries annually achieve high functional success. For example, Dr. Yusuf Yildirim holds European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) certification, which reflects the advanced training required for delicate iris repairs. Choosing such high-volume specialists in Istanbul often results in more predictable pupil movement compared to general ophthalmologists.

Patient Consensus: Most patients report that their pupils function normally after the initial healing phase. They often recommend using photos in different lighting to monitor symmetric constriction during the 3-month recovery period.

What is the safety profile of undergoing Pupilloplasty in Turkey?

Pupilloplasty in Turkey is safe due to high-volume eye centres. Surgeons there often handle 20,000+ operations. Facilities like Derda Saglik Hizmetleri and Biruni University Hospital maintain JCI-accredited standards. Specialists use techniques like internal iris suturing and laser-assisted methods to repair trauma or congenital pupil defects.

  • Specialist volume: Doctors like Dr Ahmet Satici have performed 20,000+ eye surgeries over 30 years.
  • Accredited facilities: Leading centres hold JCI and Temos certifications for global patient safety standards.
  • Clinical training: Surgeons like Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer completed fellowships at top US medical institutions.
  • Surgical expertise: Many specialists hold European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) or international council certifications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows Turkey excels in complex eye repairs because these clinics act as global hubs. Specialists in Istanbul often combine standard pupilloplasty with retina or cataract care. For Australian patients, this means accessing surgeons who perform these intricate iris procedures weekly.

Patient Consensus: Patients often mention the thorough diagnostic screenings using digital slit lamps and tomography before surgery. The precision and care provided by Turkish ophthalmologists help restore both visual function and eye appearance effectively.

What is Pupilloplasty and why is it performed?

Pupilloplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs or reconstructs a damaged or malformed pupil. Specialists in Turkey perform the surgery to restore the iris structure. This reduces debilitating glare, improves focus, and corrects light sensitivity from trauma or disease. Surgeons use fine suturing to reshape the iris diaphragm.

  • Visual improvement: Restricts pupil size to block peripheral light and reduce blurred vision.
  • Symptom relief: Minimises severe glare and light sensitivity often caused by ocular trauma.
  • Structural repair: Tightens a floppy iris to prevent complications like angle-closure glaucoma.
  • Cosmetic restoration: Repairs iris defects or colobomas to create a more natural-looking eye.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics often combine pupilloplasty with other procedures. Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer and Dr Ahmet Satici have collectively performed over 45,000 surgeries. This high volume is critical for complex cases. Pupilloplasty is frequently part of a broader plan involving cataracts or vitreo-retinal repair.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey focus on gaining relief from blinding light sensitivity. Most describe the surgery as a functional necessity. It helps restore comfortable daily vision after previous injuries.

What should international patients expect regarding Pupilloplasty recovery and follow-up care in Turkey?

Patients undergoing pupilloplasty in Turkey usually stay for 5 to 7 days for essential post-operative checks. Professional care involves antibiotic eye drops, activity restrictions, and JCI-accredited facilities. Surgeons often provide telehealth follow-up for international patients after they return home to Australia.

  • Hospital stay: Most patients are released to their hotel the same day after monitoring.
  • Medication regimen: Surgeons prescribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops to prevent infection and swelling.
  • Activity limits: Avoid heavy lifting, swimming, or rubbing eyes for 2 weeks.
  • Clinical checks: A mandatory follow-up appointment occurs before flying to check ocular pressure.
  • Digital support: Many Istanbul clinics use messaging apps to track healing progress from overseas.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume eye centres in Istanbul, like Derda Saglik Hizmetleri, serve 20,000+ patients annually. This scale allows clinics to invest in specialised corneal tomography and digital slit lamps. These tools provide more precise pupil measurements than standard equipment, leading to better visual outcomes.

What surgical techniques are used for Pupilloplasty in Turkey?

Surgeons in Turkey perform pupilloplasty using microsurgical techniques like the four-throw pupilloplasty and McAhmed method. These procedures reconstruct damaged irises. Often performed by JCI-accredited specialists, they restore visual function and pupil aesthetics. This helps following trauma, cataract complications, or congenital defects.

  • Pinhole pupilloplasty: Uses specific suturing to create a 1.5–2mm pupil. This improves vision for irregular astigmatism.
  • McAhmed technique: A modified method using secure knots within the eye for gentle iris repair.
  • McCannel technique: Uses 10-0 polypropylene sutures to tie iris edges together through tiny side incisions.
  • Vitractor-assisted reshaping: Uses a specialised probe to precisely centre and smooth the iris for better control.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish ophthalmology clinics handle high patient volumes. Centres like Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer's clinic serve 20,000+ patients annually. This vast experience helps surgeons stay proficient in complex iris reconstructions. These go beyond standard cataract surgery. This high-volume practice often leads to more refined surgical tension. This is critical for reducing post-operative glare.

Patient Consensus: Success in Turkey depends on choosing the right repair based on iris tissue health. Patients recommend clarifying if the goal is reducing light sensitivity or improving the pupil's round appearance.
