Qualifications
a.o. Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Kopp is a specialist in internal medicine with additional specialist qualifications in cardiology and angiology, practising at JUVENIS Medical Center in central Vienna. He is also — and this matters for patients — still an active senior physician at the Medical University of Vienna, where he has been part of the interventional teams treating complex heart and vascular disease for more than two decades.
Education and academic career Prof. Kopp received his doctorate in human medicine from the University of Vienna in 1992. From 1993 to 1996 he worked as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He completed his specialist training in internal medicine in Vienna between 1997 and 2004, and in 2004 was awarded the venia docendi and the title of Associate University Professor of Internal Medicine. He then added two further specialist qualifications: angiology (vascular medicine, 2004–2007) and cardiology (2007–2010). In 2014 he completed a Professional MBA in Health Care Management.
Hospital work and interventional experience Prof. Kopp has been a senior physician at the Clinic for Internal Medicine II — Angiology and Cardiology — at the Medical University of Vienna since 2007. He joined the hospital's vascular intervention team in 2001 and its cardiological intervention team in 2007, and he continues to work in both. In 2007 he also took part in an international healthcare management project with the Medical University of Vienna, VAMED and the Prince Court Medical Centre in Malaysia. He has been treating patients at JUVENIS since 2012.
Clinical focus
- Personalised cardiovascular medicine — assessment and treatment planning built around the individual patient's risk profile rather than a standard protocol
- Coronary angiography and intervention — catheter examination of the heart's arteries and, where needed, treatment of narrowings in the same session
- Peripheral angiography and intervention — the same catheter-based approach for the arteries of the legs and other regions
- Health management
- Vein treatment
What "interventional" means for a patient Coronary and peripheral interventions are performed through a catheter introduced via a small puncture in the wrist or groin — no surgical incision, no general anaesthetic, and a far shorter recovery than open surgery. The narrowed artery is widened and, in most cases, held open with a stent. Because Prof. Kopp performs these procedures within a university hospital's intervention teams, patients are assessed by someone who treats complex cases regularly rather than occasionally.
Languages Prof. Kopp treats patients in German and English.
His approach In his own words, attractiveness means "sharp thinking, performance, strategy and a zest for life" — a view of health that treats cardiovascular fitness as the foundation of how well someone actually lives, not merely the absence of disease.
