Qualifications

Dr. med. univ. Negar Fakhrai is a specialist in radiology at JUVENIS Medical Center in central Vienna, where she performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations. She has practised radiology for over two decades, in university, trauma and private hospital settings, and treats patients in German, English, Farsi and French.

Education and training Dr. Fakhrai received her doctorate in medicine in 2001, with a dissertation on quantifying coronary artery calcification using electron-beam computed tomography. She trained first in internal medicine and oncology at the Medical University of Vienna (2001–2004), and during that period worked with the Central European Cooperative Oncology Group (CECOG). She then completed her radiology training at the University Clinic for Radiology, Medical University of Vienna (2005–2013), passing her specialist examination in 2010.

Career Dr. Fakhrai worked as a radiologist at the Lorenz Böhler Trauma Hospital in Vienna from 2013 to 2021 — one of Austria's principal trauma centres, and the origin of her depth in musculoskeletal imaging. She practised in private radiology clinics in Vienna from 2016, and at the Rudolfinerhaus hospital in 2021–2022. Since 2023 she has worked independently across radiology practices in and around Vienna, including the Wiener Privatklinik, and she joined JUVENIS in March 2024.

Awards and research She received the Investigator Award of the Medical University of Vienna's University Clinic for Radiodiagnostics in 2010, and has published peer-reviewed research in journals including the American Journal of Neuroradiology, the European Journal of Radiology and the Journal of Neuro-Oncology, on subjects ranging from MRI technique to soft-tissue sarcoma and breast cancer.

Ultrasound examinations offered

  • Abdomen — upper and lower abdomen, abdominal wall and groin, kidneys, kidney transplants and residual urine, abdominal aorta
  • Vascular — carotid duplex ultrasound of the arteries supplying the brain, and duplex ultrasound of the deep leg veins
  • Breast — including both armpits, for women and men
  • Thyroid and neck — thyroid gland, neck soft tissues, lymph node stations
  • Muscles and joints — shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, palm, sole and Achilles tendon
  • Soft tissue — skin and the tissue beneath it
  • Testes

Why ultrasound, and why it is worth travelling for Ultrasound is the only major imaging method that uses no radiation at all, gives results in real time while the patient is in the room, and lets the doctor examine a joint or a vessel while it moves. Its accuracy depends almost entirely on the person holding the probe — the same examination in different hands can yield very different answers. A radiologist who has spent years in a trauma hospital reading muscles, tendons and joints, and who performs the scan and interprets it herself in one visit, is what makes the difference between a useful result and an inconclusive one.

Languages Dr. Fakhrai treats patients in German, English, Farsi and French.
