Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!
I suppose I’d give it a 4.8, really. But that wasn’t down to you. The doctor saw me an hour and a half after the scheduled time. However, the consultation was very informative. Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!

My experience has been entirely negative. The treatment prescribed did not follow the standard protocol for this condition. Under this treatment, the condition only worsened. I was given information about the most effective treatment currently used worldwide. I never received the doctor’s conclusion following the consultation, even though I asked for it several times. And on top of everything else, judging by the result, it wasn’t worth €500. A treatment that doesn’t work, with no documentation whatsoever. Just a conversation with a professor to whom you have to ask a thousand questions and figure out the treatment options for your condition yourself, because he offers nothing and explains nothing.
Speed of service delivery
The treatment recommended by the professor at the Austrian clinic was completely at odds with standard treatment protocols I never received the discharge summary, even though I had asked for it several times

I was not in the hospital. I asked just a second opinion. I was very disappointed, because I was working a lot to translate all the documentation into English, and finally I was discussing with doctor only 10 minutes, and the level of the discussion was very poor. Practically I did not get anything for 400 EUR.

Reply from Professor Johaness Drach:
Second opinion is given on the basis of a thorough analyses of provided medical reports. The procedure lasts as long until all questions of the patient have been clarified. If necessary specialists of other disciplines are also involved. The patient always receive a written statement.

the trip to the clinic was usually. I got advice, paid a doctor, translator and intermediary, did not receive receipts for these payments. But I don’t understand what the bonus actually consisted of, which I ordered through Bookimed and how to really get it. After this trip, I again received a letter about the bonus, but, in my opinion, these letters really do not cost anything.

I had a terrible experience. Dr. Zielinski was dismissive and rushed me, he hasn't answered my questions and he asked me for more tests in order to speak about treatment plans when I was told previously that I didn't need any tests in order to proceed with the consultation and receive a treatment plan. He didn't bother to explain the disease or treatment options. I was looking forward to speak to him and I put so much hope. I needed someone to explain and guide me. I was left with such a bed feeling after the consultation. No empathy and no professionalism. Bookimed apologise but they said that they can't do anything because I paid directly the clinic, even if they are the intermediary they don't take responsibility, so be very careful when booking any services. I wasted 400 euros for 10 minutes that I was trying to make a few questions in order to get some value for the money but the only thing I got was disappointment, frustration, stress and time waste for arguing. I asked for at least to have some questions asked in writing so I could get something back for my money, but they refused, and they said that the consultation was compleated. In the first place, they said that I had a second consultation for free because it wasn't compleated, and then they said it was a mistake and the consultation was compleated. Please be careful where you spend your money and put your hopes because they don't care about taking advantage of ill people in order to make money. Probably are not all the same but my experience was awful and I am very disappointed. Some become doctors because they want to help people and others have no feelings or empathy. I hope this helps whoever is reading and I hope you find a better option than I did with a doctor that cares and will help you. God bless.

The quality of the services provided is at a high level
The trip to the clinic went smoothly and without incident. We were met at the airport, helped with renting an apartment on a daily basis and introduced us to the clinic. Special thanks to Roman Baranov for his very necessary and qualified assistance, his willingness to help and solve all the problems that arise, both in terms of logistics and in terms of medical service.

Preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism
The medical team was very professional, available at a short notice, explaining the options, and ready to answer any questions. All necessary medical tests have been done quickly. The preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism, overall hospital environment was calming, which helped to reduce the stress associated with surgery and diagnosis. It would be good to have an accurate estimate of costs in advance to make an informed decision.
About Bookimed service
So far I am very satisfied with the support from Bookimed: they have contacted upon request within 24 hours, proposed travel assistance, different options of facilities/doctors for diagnosis, guided through the medical assessment process, made schedules of visits/tests/surgery at the shortest possible time, provided translation of medical documentation, have been accompanying to the visits/tests on spot at the clinic and helped with formalities/German language. Additionally, after the actual estimate of surgery costs have been higher compared to initial estimation, Bookimed was looking for ways to find the savings and negotiate the price. It was very helpful to keep in touch with Bookimed staff almost on a daily basis, with two of them: a remote manager and on-site representative, who co-ordinated well with each other. I would have a small suggestion: to provide a little bit more detail on the schedule of tests/hospital admission and needed preparation.

Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication
Very fast reaction from Bookimed in communication. Initial discussion was for an appointment in AKH and subsequently we have been forwarded to the Privatklinik. The Klinik looks very well managed. We still did not proceed with the treatment and I'm not currently able to share opinion about the Clinic itself and the treatment (will come back soon, once have treatment there). I've been in the Wiener Privatklinik for a consultation. I manage to meet the exact doctors/professors for which I was looking for a contact and did a good job. The whole story was organized and managed by Bookimed with care for the patient. Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication. For us this was very important that we are not losing time.

Our Breast cancer surgery Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Breast cancer surgery, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Mastectomy

It is a surgical procedure to remove one or both breasts, partially or completely, to treat or prevent breast cancer.

Pros: Mastectomy significantly reduces the risk of breast cancer recurrence by up to 90%. It is suitable for large tumors or multiple tumors in the same breast.
Cons: Longer recovery period compared to lumpectomy, and potential loss of sensation in the breast area. It may require additional reconstructive surgery.
Effectiveness: 90% reduction in breast cancer recurrence risk.
Duration: 2-3 hours.
Recovery: 4-6 weeks.
Best for: Large or multiple tumors, genetic predisposition to breast cancer, and when breast-conserving surgery is not an option.

Lumpectomy

Breast-conserving surgery involves removing a breast tumor and a small margin of surrounding tissue to treat breast cancer.

Pros: Preserves most of the breast, maintaining its appearance and sensation. Offers a 5-year survival rate of 93% when combined with radiation therapy.
Cons: May require additional surgeries if cancer cells are detected at the margins. Higher risk of local recurrence compared to mastectomy.
Effectiveness: Achieves a 5-year survival rate of approximately 93% with adjuvant therapy.
Duration: 1 to 2 hours
Recovery: 1 to 3 weeks
Best for: Early-stage breast cancer and tumors less than 5 centimeters.

FAQ about Breast cancer surgery in Austria

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What types of breast cancer surgery are available in Austria?

Austria offers advanced breast cancer surgeries including breast-conserving lumpectomy, oncoplastic resection, and nipple-sparing mastectomy. Specialized centers in Vienna utilize robot-assisted da Vinci systems and Intrabeam intraoperative radiotherapy to maximize precision while prioritizing aesthetic preservation and rapid recovery through multidisciplinary European care standards.

  • Breast-conserving surgery: Lumpectomy removes tumors with healthy margins, preserving natural breast tissue.
  • Modern mastectomy: Options include skin-sparing and nipple-sparing techniques to facilitate immediate reconstruction.
  • Oncoplastic approach: Reshaping techniques maintain breast contour even after large tissue removals.
  • Advanced reconstruction: Surgeons offer silicone implants, tissue expanders, or autologous flap procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many countries focus solely on tumor removal, Austrian centers like Wiener Privatklinik prioritize speed. Data shows patients often access diagnostics and surgery within ultra-short timeframes. This rapid response is a critical survival factor for aggressive cancer types.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the speed of care and reasonable pricing. Many emphasize the importance of discussing reconstruction and `chemo first` vs `surgery first` sequences with their team early on.

How does Austria regulate the quality of breast cancer surgeries?

Austria regulates breast cancer surgery quality through mandatory certification of Breast Health Centers and strict caseload requirements. The Austrian Health Care Structure Plan enforces a minimum of 100 primary diagnoses annually for specialized centers to ensure high surgical standards and optimal outcomes.

  • Specialized certification: The Austrian Certification Commission audits centers for compliance with interdisciplinary scientific standards.
  • Caseload thresholds: Primary centers must manage 100 cases yearly, while partner centers require 30.
  • Multidisciplinary boards: Mandatory tumor boards include surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists for integrated treatment planning.
  • External auditing: Independent experts conduct regular peer-review audits to monitor clinical and process quality.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Quality regulation in Austria is exceptionally centralized, with over 80% of patients treated in certified units. Clinics like Wiener Privatklinik demonstrate this high standard with a 95% positive treatment outcome rate. Choosing centers with ISO 9001 certification further ensures standardized surgical pathways.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the ultra-short waiting times in Austrian private clinics, which many feel is life-saving. They recommend verifying a surgeon's specific annual volume and ensuring a multidisciplinary team handles both oncology and reconstruction.

Can I get breast reconstruction at the same time as my cancer surgery in Austria?

Yes, patients in Austria can receive immediate breast reconstruction during their cancer surgery. Top centers like Wiener Privatklinik and Döbling Private Clinic coordinate oncology and plastic surgery teams in single sessions. Options include direct-to-implant, tissue expanders, or autologous flap-based techniques performed under general anesthesia.

  • Available techniques: Choose between direct-to-implant, tissue expanders, or complex flap-based reconstruction methods.
  • Surgical duration: Procedures range from 4 hours for implants to 11 hours for flaps.
  • Hospital stay: Patients remain hospitalized as inpatients until surgical drains are safely removed.
  • Specialized centers: Facilities like Wiener Privatklinik hold ISO 9001 certifications and Newsweek rankings.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek immediate results, Austrian specialists often recommend tissue expanders if radiation is likely. Data shows complex flap procedures can last up to 11 hours. Choosing a clinic with 24-hour acute services, such as Döbling Private Clinic, ensures safety during these longer recovery windows.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the ultra-short waiting times in Vienna, which many believe significantly improves their treatment outcomes. They often emphasize that coordination between Bookimed and Austrian hospitals exceeds expectations for both speed and support.

Which hospitals and clinics are recognized for breast cancer care in Austria?

Austria is home to world-renowned breast cancer centers, primarily in Vienna, that follow strict multidisciplinary protocols. Leading facilities like Wiener Privatklinik and Döbling Private Clinic offer integrated care through certified Breast Health Centers, ensuring patients receive coordinated surgery, pathology, and oncology services under one roof.

  • Wiener Privatklinik: Ranked among Newsweek World Best Hospitals, featuring the Vienna International Center for Breast Oncology.
  • Döbling Private Clinic: Part of PremiQaMed Group, providing digital diagnostics and da Vinci robot-assisted surgery systems.
  • Confraternitaet Private Clinic: Hosts top specialists like Thomas Bachleitner-Hofmann, who is trained at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
  • Vienna General Hospital: Large university complex offering precision radiotherapy and access to global clinical trials.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient volume is a major quality indicator in Austria. Wiener Privatklinik treats over 7,000 patients annually and maintains a massive roster of 300 doctors. This high density of specialists allows the clinic to assemble a multidisciplinary tumor board for complex cases within days, significantly shortening the time to surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the ultra-short waiting times for diagnostics and surgery, which many feel is life-saving. The coordination between Bookimed and Vienna hospitals is often described as superior to local care options.
