Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!
I suppose I’d give it a 4.8, really. But that wasn’t down to you. The doctor saw me an hour and a half after the scheduled time. However, the consultation was very informative. Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!

My experience has been entirely negative. The treatment prescribed did not follow the standard protocol for this condition. Under this treatment, the condition only worsened. I was given information about the most effective treatment currently used worldwide. I never received the doctor’s conclusion following the consultation, even though I asked for it several times. And on top of everything else, judging by the result, it wasn’t worth €500. A treatment that doesn’t work, with no documentation whatsoever. Just a conversation with a professor to whom you have to ask a thousand questions and figure out the treatment options for your condition yourself, because he offers nothing and explains nothing.
Speed of service delivery
The treatment recommended by the professor at the Austrian clinic was completely at odds with standard treatment protocols I never received the discharge summary, even though I had asked for it several times

I was not in the hospital. I asked just a second opinion. I was very disappointed, because I was working a lot to translate all the documentation into English, and finally I was discussing with doctor only 10 minutes, and the level of the discussion was very poor. Practically I did not get anything for 400 EUR.

Reply from Professor Johaness Drach:
Second opinion is given on the basis of a thorough analyses of provided medical reports. The procedure lasts as long until all questions of the patient have been clarified. If necessary specialists of other disciplines are also involved. The patient always receive a written statement.

the trip to the clinic was usually. I got advice, paid a doctor, translator and intermediary, did not receive receipts for these payments. But I don’t understand what the bonus actually consisted of, which I ordered through Bookimed and how to really get it. After this trip, I again received a letter about the bonus, but, in my opinion, these letters really do not cost anything.

I had a terrible experience. Dr. Zielinski was dismissive and rushed me, he hasn't answered my questions and he asked me for more tests in order to speak about treatment plans when I was told previously that I didn't need any tests in order to proceed with the consultation and receive a treatment plan. He didn't bother to explain the disease or treatment options. I was looking forward to speak to him and I put so much hope. I needed someone to explain and guide me. I was left with such a bed feeling after the consultation. No empathy and no professionalism. Bookimed apologise but they said that they can't do anything because I paid directly the clinic, even if they are the intermediary they don't take responsibility, so be very careful when booking any services. I wasted 400 euros for 10 minutes that I was trying to make a few questions in order to get some value for the money but the only thing I got was disappointment, frustration, stress and time waste for arguing. I asked for at least to have some questions asked in writing so I could get something back for my money, but they refused, and they said that the consultation was compleated. In the first place, they said that I had a second consultation for free because it wasn't compleated, and then they said it was a mistake and the consultation was compleated. Please be careful where you spend your money and put your hopes because they don't care about taking advantage of ill people in order to make money. Probably are not all the same but my experience was awful and I am very disappointed. Some become doctors because they want to help people and others have no feelings or empathy. I hope this helps whoever is reading and I hope you find a better option than I did with a doctor that cares and will help you. God bless.

The quality of the services provided is at a high level
The trip to the clinic went smoothly and without incident. We were met at the airport, helped with renting an apartment on a daily basis and introduced us to the clinic. Special thanks to Roman Baranov for his very necessary and qualified assistance, his willingness to help and solve all the problems that arise, both in terms of logistics and in terms of medical service.

Preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism
The medical team was very professional, available at a short notice, explaining the options, and ready to answer any questions. All necessary medical tests have been done quickly. The preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism, overall hospital environment was calming, which helped to reduce the stress associated with surgery and diagnosis. It would be good to have an accurate estimate of costs in advance to make an informed decision.
About Bookimed service
So far I am very satisfied with the support from Bookimed: they have contacted upon request within 24 hours, proposed travel assistance, different options of facilities/doctors for diagnosis, guided through the medical assessment process, made schedules of visits/tests/surgery at the shortest possible time, provided translation of medical documentation, have been accompanying to the visits/tests on spot at the clinic and helped with formalities/German language. Additionally, after the actual estimate of surgery costs have been higher compared to initial estimation, Bookimed was looking for ways to find the savings and negotiate the price. It was very helpful to keep in touch with Bookimed staff almost on a daily basis, with two of them: a remote manager and on-site representative, who co-ordinated well with each other. I would have a small suggestion: to provide a little bit more detail on the schedule of tests/hospital admission and needed preparation.

Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication
Very fast reaction from Bookimed in communication. Initial discussion was for an appointment in AKH and subsequently we have been forwarded to the Privatklinik. The Klinik looks very well managed. We still did not proceed with the treatment and I'm not currently able to share opinion about the Clinic itself and the treatment (will come back soon, once have treatment there). I've been in the Wiener Privatklinik for a consultation. I manage to meet the exact doctors/professors for which I was looking for a contact and did a good job. The whole story was organized and managed by Bookimed with care for the patient. Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication. For us this was very important that we are not losing time.

FAQ about Whipple surgery in Austria

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is Whipple surgery and why is it performed?

Whipple surgery, or pancreaticoduodenectomy, is a complex operation removing the pancreatic head, duodenum, gallbladder, and bile duct. Surgeons perform it primarily to treat resectable pancreatic cancer, bile duct tumors, or severe chronic pancreatitis located in the organs near the small intestine.

  • Surgical goal: Removes tumors from the pancreatic head and restores digestive flow.
  • Primary indications: Treats pancreatic cancer, ampullary cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, and duodenal tumors.
  • Organs involved: Surgeons remove the gallbladder, bile duct, and the first intestinal section.
  • Digestive reconstruction: Surgeons reconnect the remaining pancreas and bile duct to the intestine.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many hospitals offer abdominal surgery, choosing specialized centers like Döbling Private Clinic provides access to the da Vinci Xi robot. Robotic approaches for Whipple surgery can reduce internal scarring. This is crucial because recovery often involves long-term digestive adjustments and enzyme therapy.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that recovery is a marathon involving significant fatigue and weight loss. Success often depends on having a dedicated nutritional support team for post-operative care.

What are the main advantages of choosing Austria for a Whipple procedure?

Austria offers elite surgical precision for Whipple procedures, combining high-volume academic expertise with advanced robotic technology. Patients benefit from specialized hepatobiliary centers in Vienna that utilize da Vinci systems and strict EU safety standards to minimize complications while reducing costs by 49% compared to US averages.

  • Surgical volume: Specialized units handle high annual resection counts, lowering mortality rates significantly.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize da Vinci Xi robotic systems for precise, minimally invasive resections.
  • Quality standards: Facilities maintain ISO 9001:2015 certifications and rigorous European Union medical protocols.
  • Financial efficiency: Procedures cost $45,000 to $75,000, providing significant savings over US costs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bookimed data shows a unique synergy between private clinics and academia in Vienna. For instance, Rudolfinerhaus grants patients access to over 300 doctors, including professors from the Medical University of Vienna. This structure allows patients to receive private-tier comfort while benefiting from the highest level of university-grade surgical research and expertise.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that choosing high-volume teams in Austria is critical for managing complex pancreatic cases. They often report that advanced perioperative care makes the long, non-linear recovery process more manageable.

Which medical facilities or hubs are prominent for pancreatic surgery in Austria?

Austria's prominent pancreatic surgery hubs are concentrated in Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz, and Linz. These facilities feature specialized multidisciplinary oncology centers and university teaching hospitals. They specialize in complex resections, Whipple procedures, and precision oncology under International Organization for Standardization (ISO) quality management standards.

  • Vienna medical hub: Vienna General Hospital (AKH) houses a specialized Pancreatic Cancer Unit for complex surgeries.
  • Private surgical centers: Döbling Private Clinic utilizes da Vinci Xi robot-assisted systems for minimally invasive oncology.
  • Academic hospital network: Rudolfinerhaus hosts professors from the Medical University of Vienna for specialized surgical consultations.
  • Regional centers: Innsbruck University Hospital and Ordensklinikum Linz maintain dedicated, high-volume hepato-pancreato-biliary surgical units.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While university hospitals handle the highest complexity, Vienna’s private clinics offer a unique hybrid model. Facilities like Döbling Private Clinic and Rudolfinerhaus allow patients to select specific university professors for their surgery. This combines academic surgical expertise with the shorter waiting times and individualized care of a private setting.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that specialized care for pancreatic resections is concentrated in a few high-volume centers. They recommend verifying a surgical team's annual procedure count before booking to ensure the best clinical outcomes.

How long is the typical hospital stay and recovery timeline for Whipple surgery in Austria?

Whipple surgery in Austria typically requires a hospital stay of 5 to 10 days for uncomplicated cases. Patients spend the first 24 to 48 hours in intensive care. Initial home recovery takes 6 to 8 weeks, with full stamina restoration often requiring up to 1 year.

  • In-hospital monitoring: ICU stays last 1 to 3 days for specialized surgical observation.
  • Discharge criteria: Patients must walk, eat, and show active bowel movement function.
  • Home recovery: Light activity resumes around week 6 after initial tissue healing.
  • Long-term restoration: Full physical strength and weight stabilization typically take 3 to 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Private clinics in Vienna, such as Döbling or Rudolfinerhaus, often utilize professors from the Medical University of Vienna. These facilities handle over 10,000 to 67,000 patients annually. High surgical volume at these centers directly correlates with efficient discharge timelines of 5 to 7 days.

Patient Consensus: Bowel movement reactivation is the most common factor that extends hospital stays. Patients emphasize staying near the surgical facility for one week post-discharge to manage any follow-up needs.
