How Much Does SIRT therapy Cost in Germany?

SIRT therapy in Germany typically costs from $30,000 to $45,000 per treatment cycle. The final price depends on the hospital choice, specialist experience, and the specific radioactive microspheres used. In the US, similar procedures cost around $55,000 on average. Patients save around 32% compared to the US. Inclusions usually cover imaging, dosimetry planning, the procedure, and a short hospital stay.

  • Hospital tier: Prices fluctuate based on whether a patient chooses a university or municipal hospital.
  • Microsphere type: The choice between Yttrium-90 glass or resin beads impacts the total material cost.
  • Medical hubs: Major treatment centers are located in Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, and Bremen.
  • Specialist fees: Highly experienced interventional radiologists at renowned centers may command higher professional fees.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a Focus-ranked clinic like Asklepios Hospital Barmbek ensures high-tier radiotherapy standards. Germany is a top destination, serving over 800,000 patients annually at major centers like Charité Berlin. Since German clinics often use standardized pricing, the real value lies in technical specialization. Centers like Nordwest Clinic lead in oncology innovations, including anti-cancer vaccines. Opting for these research-heavy institutions provides access to advanced protocols for the same regulated cost.

The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment
With the organization of medical services, everything went clearly according to the previous plan. Tatyana, the representative of the company, is very communicative, explains everything, no complaints, even came at 7.30 for the procedure, although there was no translation. I made a slight remark, the price for some services was not announced to me , but in fact it was added... These side effects must also be voiced before the trip...... The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment.....

I am writing a review for those people who are in the same difficult situation as our family. Just want to warn, think before you go here. They did not help us ... Moreover, now we understand that they simply did not tell us the truth, promised treatment that everything would be fine and we believed in it, sincerely! They didn’t save on treatment, did everything they recommended, but they just cheerlessly pumped chemistry and prescribed unnecessary consultations like a physiotherapist with charging a hopelessly sick person !!! The company "phoenix" is a soulless creature with the function of receiving money, I don’t even know how to call them anymore ... Doctor Professor Eger also smiled on detours and said that everything would be fine and didn’t even tell the family that the situation was getting worse, she appointed procedures ... As we now understand, everything was clear for a long time, we just wanted to be "treated" because we paid. They tortured our daddy heartlessly and cynically for money !!! Curator Stoyanova stopped responding to letters and the phone immediately, as soon as they informed her that the patient no longer exists. NO ONE! neither she, nor "phoenix", nor the clinic, they even expressed condolences ... It hurts to realize that nothing human is left in people ... We scolded our Russian doctors, and they just told us the truth right away

Not good. The people that I had appointments with did not show up. I met with others who seemed to doubt my records and then claimed that my medical imaging showed no problems whatsoever. I returned home and now seem to have pneumonia in the top of my lungs around the vertebra that are known to have lesions (T1,T2,T3). I consider your service to be a fraud.

My husband and I are very pleased that we made an appointment with Professor Elka Yeager. The examination was carried out on all areas of the body that interest us, and a chemotherapy course was prescribed based on the results of the examination. The first session was held in a hospital clinic. The host company worked very professionally, with great attention to patients. Many thanks to all and best wishes from us!

"I'm very pleased with the treatment
My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense.

He answered all my initial questions and the ones I've sent after his initial answers in meter of few days
I requested a second opinion for the treatment of prostate cancer for my dad. The cosultation was provided in written by Prof. Dr. med. Sebastian Melchior. He answered all my initial questions and the ones I've sent after his initial answers in meter of few days. This helped us in understanding better the situation and possible options. However due to the fact that most of the answers were of general rather specific nature, in the end we are still not sure what is the better treatment in our case.

"The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person!" Return: About the Doctor: "We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr
My mother was diagnosed in Russia with a terrible diagnosis - breast cancer stage 4. The doctors' actions were not credible, so we turned to Bookimed for the selection of a clinic and a doctor. We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr. Ursula Makowiec. Mom passed a 3-day examination in the hospital, in a separate ward. Friendly atmosphere, professionalism, respect for the elderly patient - all this allowed us to relax, not to try to control every step of the medical staff, to read the articles on the Internet. I was sure that we made the right choice. And most importantly - the diagnosis was not confirmed! My mother was not breast cancer with metastases, but a sweat cancer in the armpit without any signs of metastases, the prognosis is much more favorable. The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person! We plan to be observed further in this clinic with this doctor. I would also like to thank the translator Marina Wernke. She was not only an excellent professional, but also a very pleasant conversationalist, we were very comfortable with her. I also want to thank the curators who helped a lot all the time while mom was in the clinic.

Everything is clear and reasonable
Immediately I will note not the intrusive and at the same time "essentially" made by Alena presentation of the clinic. And really everything turned out to be as they described to me: the doctor explained how he sees my situation, what kind of opinion of Moscow doctors he agrees with, and what does not and what he proposes to do. Everything is clear and reasonable.

"I advise everyone here to contact!"
Hello! My dad was diagnosed with a diagnosis in the clinic: adenomatic stomach carcinoma of the 3rd stage. Doctors, nurses and accompanying personnel are qualified professionals, very attentive! All procedures are made as necessary, and not for profit. The only thing that is embarrassing is the menu for people without a stomach. (They gave it hot and fried) Accompanying company takes you from the airport on the day of arrival to the airport on the day of departure. In general, from the time of the first call to today, everyone is happy! I advise everyone here to contact!

FAQ about SIRT therapy in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What types of cancer are treated with SIRT in Germany?

Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) in Germany treats primary liver cancer and secondary liver metastases. Specialists use it for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, and spreading colorectal cancer. This targeted radioembolization concentrates yttrium-90 microspheres directly within hepatic arteries to destroy localized tumor cells.

  • Primary liver cancers: Effectively treats hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic bile duct tumors.
  • Colorectal metastases: Managed when liver-dominant spreading occurs and surgery is not feasible.
  • Neuroendocrine tumors: Controls liver-involved neuroendocrine malignancies as part of long-term therapy.
  • Other secondary cancers: Includes liver metastases from breast cancer, uveal melanoma, and pancreatic cancer.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals often use SIRT for downstaging tumors to make patients eligible for transplants. Clinics like Charité Berlin and Nordwest Clinic Frankfurt am Main handle high volumes, often seeing over 60,000 patients annually. This massive case volume allows specialized tumor boards to precisely determine if SIRT or chemotherapy offers better survival for liver-dominant cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients often seek SIRT when standard surgery or ablation is no longer an option. It is frequently requested specifically for colorectal or neuroendocrine metastases to control liver-dominant disease growth.

Who is eligible for SIRT therapy?

SIRT therapy eligibility requires patients to have inoperable primary liver cancer or metastatic tumors spread to the liver from other organs. Candidates must maintain compensated liver function and a liver-dominant disease profile where the cancer has not significantly spread to other body systems.

  • Tumor types: Includes hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, or metastatic colorectal, breast, and neuroendocrine cancers.
  • Liver function: Requires Child-Pugh Class A status to ensure the liver can withstand radiation.
  • Disease profile: Cancer must be confined to the liver or primarily located within it.
  • Performance status: Patients must be physically active with an ECOG score of 0 or 1.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German oncology centers like Charité Berlin and Medical Center Solingen rely on multidisciplinary tumor boards to approve SIRT. Eligibility often hinges on the MAA scan results, which check for lung shunting. High lung shunting disqualifies patients even if their cancer type matches, making this mapping phase the most critical step in the German protocol.

Patient Consensus: Patients often find that while they meet the initial medical criteria, the final decision rests on the complex anatomy of their liver blood supply. It is common for the procedure to be ruled out late in the process due to safety concerns identified during vascular mapping.

What are the main contraindications for the procedure?

Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) contraindications in Germany primarily involve compromised liver function, unsuitable vascular anatomy, or excessive extrahepatic disease. Medical teams at German Cancer Society-accredited centers exclude patients with severe cirrhosis, high bilirubin levels, or significant shunting of radiation to the lungs or gastrointestinal tract during pre-treatment mapping.

  • Liver function: Treatment is denied if bilirubin levels or cirrhosis severity indicate advanced liver failure.
  • Vascular anatomy: Mapping must confirm radiation cannot reach the stomach, pancreas, or intestines safely.
  • Disease spread: Extensive cancer outside the liver may prioritize systemic chemotherapy over localized SIRT.
  • General health: Poor performance status, rapid weight loss, or active infections disqualify many candidates.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals like Charite or Solingen use mapping angiograms to catch vascular issues early. Even if initial anatomy looks complex, specialists often perform preventative embolization to protect nearby organs. This allows some patients previously considered ineligible to safely proceed with the procedure.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find the mapping angiogram is the most stressful step. It determines if their liver can handle radiation without damaging the stomach or lungs.

What are the rare or severe risks of SIRT?

Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) is safe when performed by interventional radiologists in certified German medical institutions. Severe complications usually occur if microspheres migrate to the stomach, lungs, or healthy liver tissue. Pre-treatment mapping reduces these risks by sealing off vessels and calculating lung shunting.

  • Gastrointestinal ulcers: Inadvertent microsphere reflux can cause severe stomach or duodenal ulcerations and bleeding.
  • Radiation pneumonitis: Significant lung shunting causes inflammation, presenting as persistent dry cough or breathing difficulties.
  • Radiation-induced liver disease: Overexposure to healthy tissue may lead to jaundice, ascites, or liver failure.
  • Biliary complications: Severe inflammation of the gallbladder or bile duct injury can require surgical intervention.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals like Charite and certified centers like Medical Center in Solingen emphasize two-stage planning. Data shows that the mandatory pre-treatment mapping scan is the most critical safety factor. Clinics with German Cancer Society accreditation often achieve higher safety by using advanced software to pinpoint precise dosing and vessel occlusion.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that pre-treatment mapping is as vital as the therapy. Many report being most concerned about sudden jaundice or severe fatigue appearing weeks after the procedure.

How is the SIRT procedure performed?

SIRT is a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure that delivers radioactive microspheres directly to liver tumors via the hepatic artery. Interventional radiologists perform this targeted treatment in two stages, including a mapping phase and a radiation delivery phase, using real-time X-ray guidance and nuclear medicine imaging.

  • Mapping phase: Radiologists use angiograms to visualize vessels and block non-target branches 1–2 weeks before treatment.
  • Safety testing: Doctors inject technetium-99m test beads to check for potential shunting to the lungs.
  • Microsphere infusion: Surgeons deliver millions of yttrium-90 or holmium-166 beads directly into tumor blood supplies.
  • Radiation delivery: Permanent beads emit short-range beta radiation, destroying cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals like Charite or Nordwest prioritize a protocol-driven approach by strictly separating mapping and treatment by 7–14 days. While some global centers attempt faster timelines, this gap allows German specialists to meticulously coil secondary arteries, significantly reducing the risk of radiation reaching the stomach or gallbladder.

Patient Consensus: The catheter procedure is often shorter than expected, but recovery typically involves flu-like symptoms and fatigue for several days. Patients emphasize the importance of confirming whether the clinic bundles all-inclusive imaging and follow-up scans into the initial treatment plan.

Can SIRT cure liver cancer completely?

Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) is rarely a standalone cure. It serves as a palliative treatment to shrink tumors or slow disease progression. A complete cure usually requires surgical resection or a liver transplant after SIRT successfully downsizes inoperable tumors to a manageable size.

  • Tumor downsizing: It shrinks large tumors to make surgical resection or transplantation possible.
  • Bridging therapy: This procedure prevents tumor growth while patients wait for a donor liver.
  • Hypertrophy stimulation: SIRT helps healthy liver tissue grow before surgeons remove cancerous sections.
  • Precision delivery: Microspheres deliver localized radiation directly to tumors through the hepatic artery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German oncology centers like Nordwest Clinic or Solingen often use SIRT as conversion therapy. Data shows Germany is a top-ranked destination for complex oncology because these facilities integrate SIRT with targeted therapies. This combined approach successfully transitions patients from inoperable status to candidates for curative surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that SIRT offers better disease control with fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. Most view it as a critical bridge that buys time for surgery when the cancer remains liver-limited.

How long do patients need to be hospitalized in Germany?

Patients undergoing SIRT therapy in Germany typically require a 1-night hospital stay for observation. While the German national average for general inpatient care is 7.2 days, SIRT is a specialized arterial radiation procedure that usually allows for discharge the next morning once radiation-safety protocols are met.

  • Admission duration: Most specialized centers limit hospitalization to 1 night for stable patients.
  • Radiation safety: Discharge timing depends on localized radiation-safety routines and initial monitoring results.
  • Observation focus: Hospitalization ensures immediate management of potential side effects like pain or nausea.
  • Clinical certifications: Top facilities often hold German Cancer Society or TÜV certifications for oncology.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While SIRT is efficient, the mapping angiography and the actual treatment often occur separately. Clinics like Medical Center in Solingen or Nordwest Clinic manage high volumes, but you should verify if they require two separate admissions. Some centers bundle these into a single 2-day stay to minimize travel for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Most patients find the 1-night stay sufficient but emphasize checking post-treatment radiation precautions. They suggest confirming whether the mapping procedure requires its own dedicated overnight observation before the treatment day.
