"Israel is a really high level and professionalism of doctors
Hello! Thank you for organizing my mom’s treatment. The host, organizers, are professionals and have done everything possible for quick surgery and meeting with doctors. Denis and his team seem to be working around the clock. Great fellows! Doctors are awesome! Attentive and very caring. And most importantly, knowledgeable. The operation went well and we are very pleased with everything. The room was comfortable. All that is needed. The only thing is Ichilov Center - a state hospital, the attendants did not always provide the services expected from them. But our host always did everything possible to quickly eliminate certain situations. They patronized us constantly. Israel is a really high level and professionalism of doctors. We were very pleased.

FAQ about ApiFix system implantation in Israel

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the ApiFix System and where was it developed?

The ApiFix system is a minimally invasive, motion-preserving spinal implant developed in Israel for treating Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. This non-fusion internal brace utilizes an adjustable ratchet device and three pedicle screws to correct spinal curves while maintaining vertebral flexibility and natural growth.

  • Non-fusion technology: Preserves spinal motion by avoiding permanent vertebral fusion used in traditional surgery.
  • Minimally invasive approach: Requires smaller incisions, leading to shorter 5-day hospital stays and faster recovery.
  • Gradual correction: Achieves spinal alignment through the adjustable device and specialized post-operative physiotherapy.
  • Patient eligibility: Primarily for patients aged 10–16 with moderate, flexible curves between 35–60 degrees.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many countries offer scoliosis surgery, Israel remains the primary destination for ApiFix because the technology originated there. Clinics like Sheba Medical Center integrate the implant with 3D O-arm navigation for extreme precision. Leading surgeons like Dr. Alon Friedlander, recognized by Forbes, utilize these tools to handle complex pediatric cases that standard clinics might avoid.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the preservation of mobility compared to fusion, though they emphasize that success depends on committed post-operative physiotherapy. Many report returning to school within 2 weeks, provided the spinal curve was flexible enough before surgery.

Is ApiFix better than spinal fusion?

ApiFix is better for adolescent patients seeking to preserve spinal mobility and avoid permanent vertebral fusion. This minimally invasive internal brace allows continued growth and movement using only 3 anchor points. It enables walking within 1 day and a school return in 1-2 weeks.

  • Motion preservation: Unlike fusion, ApiFix maintains natural spinal flexibility instead of locking vertebrae.
  • Surgical approach: The procedure uses far fewer screws than traditional fusion, reducing blood loss.
  • Rapid recovery: Patients move immediately after surgery, typically leaving the hospital within 5 days.
  • System reversibility: Surgeons can theoretically remove the device after 3-5 years once correction stabilizes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli centers like Sheba Medical Center integrate 3D O-arm navigation for ApiFix implantation. This technology provides real-time imaging during surgery, which is critical because ApiFix relies on only 3 specific contact points. Precise screw placement using these 3D maps significantly reduces the likelihood of needing a follow-up revision.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the quick return to activity but emphasize that results depend on spinal flexibility. Experts remind families that traditional fusion remains the safer, more proven choice for rigid or severe curves.

Who is eligible for the ApiFix procedure?

Ideal candidates for ApiFix are patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) having flexible single curves between 35 and 60 degrees. This non-fusion alternative maintains spinal motion and requires curves to reduce below 30 degrees during lateral side-bending x-rays for surgical eligibility.

  • Primary diagnosis: Confirmed adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with single Lenke 1 or 5 curves.
  • Curve magnitude: Cobb angle measuring 35 to 60 degrees in the thoracic or lumbar region.
  • Spine flexibility: Lateral side-bending tests must show the curve reduces to less than 30 degrees.
  • Kyphosis limit: Thoracic kyphosis must measure under 55 degrees between T5 and T12 vertebrae.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While ApiFix is FDA-approved for growing spines, Israeli specialists like Dr. Alon Friedlander at Sheba Medical Center often utilize 3D O-arm navigation for higher precision. This technology is crucial because the ratchet mechanism requires perfect placement to allow for future non-surgical expansions during manual physiotherapy.

Patient Consensus: Many families choose this over traditional fusion because it is reversible and preserves natural movement. Success often depends on passing the side-bending test, which proves the spine is still flexible enough for the device.

What is the long-term success rate?

Long-term success for ApiFix implantation hinges on preserving spinal mobility while achieving stable curve correction. Most successful cases see a 50% reduction in spinal curvature. Success rates remain high when surgeons utilize 3D O-arm navigation for precise placement within JCI-accredited Israeli medical centers.

  • Correction rate: Expect approximately 50% spinal curve reduction based on individual flexibility levels.
  • Hospital stay: Patients typically require 5 days of specialized inpatient care for monitoring.
  • Technology used: Advanced 3D O-arm surgical imaging ensures highly accurate hardware positioning.
  • Surgeon expertise: Leading specialists like Alon Friedlander are recognized among Forbes Israel top doctors.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While ApiFix is a breakthrough for motion preservation, data from Sheba Medical Center suggests its true value is delaying or avoiding traditional fusion. Because Sheba ranks among the world top 10 hospitals, their specialists often use this as a bridge treatment for growing children whose spines need continued flexibility.

Patient Consensus: Patients value this as a motion-preserving alternative to fusion but carry concerns about mechanical rod integrity. Many prioritize verifying a surgeon's specific volume of ApiFix cases to minimize the risk of future revision surgery.

What does the surgical procedure involve?

ApiFix system implantation in Israel involves a minimally invasive, non-fusion spinal correction using the API Fix titanium rod. Surgeons implant the device through a small incision, attaching it with just two screws. This preserves spinal mobility while a ratchet mechanism corrects curvature gradually.

  • Surgical technique: Surgeons use 3D O-arm imaging for precise, minimally invasive placement.
  • Dynamic correction: A ratchet-based rod allows for gradual deformity correction after the surgery.
  • Hospital stay: Patients typically remain in the hospital for 5 days post-procedure.
  • Mobility preservation: This non-fusion approach maintains full spinal flexibility unlike traditional scoliosis fusion.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli specialists like Dr. Alon Friedlander at Sheba Medical Center prioritize internal navigation technology. Using the Medtronic O-arm system reduces surgical risk significantly. Data shows this technology ensures perfect screw placement in a single session. This precision is why Sheba ranks among the top hospitals globally for spinal care.

Patient Consensus: Patients value how quickly they return to normal activities. Most start walking within 2 days. They emphasize following physiotherapy closely to ensure the ratchet mechanism corrects the curve correctly without over-stressing the hardware.

What is the recovery time?

Recovery after ApiFix system implantation in Israel is significantly faster than traditional spinal fusion. Most patients resume basic daily activities within 3 weeks. You can expect to walk and run without pain in 1 to 2 months, with full spinal flexibility returning by 4 months post-surgery.

  • Hospital stay: Patients typically remain in the hospital for 3 to 5 days for observation.
  • Immediate mobility: Most patients start walking the day after surgery to promote healthy circulation.
  • Daily activities: School or desk work resumes at 4 weeks, often requiring a lumbar cushion.
  • Full flexibility: Bending and twisting movements generally feel natural within 2 to 4 months.
  • Physical restrictions: Patients should avoid heavy lifting and core-intensive exercises for 6 to 8 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Sheba Medical Center packages suggest a 5-day hospital stay, our internal data shows many patients are discharged after 3 days. This rapid discharge is possible because the ApiFix approach is motion-preserving and less invasive than fusion. Surgeons like Alon Friedlander use 3D O-arm navigation to ensure precise implant placement, which directly minimizes post-operative tissue trauma and speeds up the initial healing phase.

Patient Consensus: Patients report feeling significant improvements in mobility by the 2-week mark. Many are surprised by how quickly they transition from walking to pain-free running within the second month.

Is the ApiFix device removable?

The ApiFix device is designed to be removable after the spine has stabilized, typically within 3 to 4 years. Unlike traditional spinal fusion, this motion-preserving system acts as a temporary internal brace that allows for removal once corrective goals and proper spinal alignment are achieved.

  • Removal timeframe: Surgeons typically consider removal 3 to 4 years after the initial implantation.
  • Motion preservation: Removal allows patients to regain a full range of motion in the spine.
  • Low invasiveness: The removal procedure is significantly less invasive than the original device implantation.
  • Short hospitalization: Most patients require less than 24 hours of hospital stay for removal.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the primary goal is spinal stability, the choice of facility impacts long-term monitoring. Sheba Medical Center uses the 3D O-arm navigation system, which provides high-precision imaging. This technology helps specialists like Dr. Alon Friedlander monitor screw positioning and device integrity during routine follow-ups to determine the exact timing for safe removal.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the minimal pain associated with removal and the freedom of movement it restores. Many express relief that the device is a temporary correction rather than a permanent fusion.
