"Israel is a really high level and professionalism of doctors
Hello! Thank you for organizing my mom’s treatment. The host, organizers, are professionals and have done everything possible for quick surgery and meeting with doctors. Denis and his team seem to be working around the clock. Great fellows! Doctors are awesome! Attentive and very caring. And most importantly, knowledgeable. The operation went well and we are very pleased with everything. The room was comfortable. All that is needed. The only thing is Ichilov Center - a state hospital, the attendants did not always provide the services expected from them. But our host always did everything possible to quickly eliminate certain situations. They patronized us constantly. Israel is a really high level and professionalism of doctors. We were very pleased.

FAQ about Surgical treatment of scoliosis in Israel

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What techniques are used for scoliosis surgery in Israel?

Israel utilizes world-class scoliosis techniques including the motion-sparing ApiFix system, traditional posterior spinal fusion with pedicle screws, and vertebral body tethering. Surgeons at JCI-accredited centers like Sheba Medical Center integrate 3D O-arm navigation and robotic guidance to achieve high precision in complex spinal deformity corrections.

  • Motion-preserving technology: ApiFix systems provide non-fusion alternatives for moderate curves without sacrificing spinal flexibility.
  • Minimally invasive approaches: Surgeons use specialized small-incision techniques to reduce tissue trauma and speed recovery.
  • Advanced navigation: 3D O-arm imaging and robotic systems ensure hyper-accurate placement of internal fixation hardware.
  • Complex deformity correction: Techniques like posterior vertebral column resection address severe or stiff spinal curvatures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli specialists often provide earlier access to hybrid motion-sparing technologies like ApiFix compared to many Western countries. While standard fusion usually remains the gold choice for severe curves, clinics like Sheba Medical Center lead in non-fusion protocols. These options often result in shorter 5-day hospital stays for eligible candidates.

Patient Consensus: Patients value how centers like Sourasky and Sheba adopt new spinal tech early. Many specifically seek out these facilities to discuss non-fusion options that preserve natural back movement.

When is surgery recommended for scoliosis in Israel?

Surgeons in Israel recommend scoliosis surgery when spinal curvature exceeds 40 to 50 degrees or progresses despite conservative therapy. Key indicators include respiratory compromise, organ compression, or chronic pain that resists non-invasive management. Specialist clinics utilize advanced 3D O-arm navigation to ensure precise spinal stabilization.

  • Curve threshold: Surgery is typically indicated for Cobb angles exceeding 45 to 50 degrees.
  • Progression rate: Deformities advancing more than one degree annually require surgical intervention to stabilize.
  • Organ function: Intervention is necessary when spinal rotation impairs lung capacity or cardiac function.
  • Treatment failure: Surgery is recommended if the curve worsens while using specialized orthopedic bracing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli centers like Sheba Medical Center uniquely offer the ApiFix system, a minimally invasive internal brace. Data shows this non-fusion alternative is particularly effective for adolescents. It preserves spinal flexibility, unlike traditional fusion methods, while requiring only a 5-day hospital stay.

Patient Consensus: Focus on verifying your exact Cobb angle before choosing surgery, as the primary goal is stopping further progression. Many patients emphasize that while cosmetic improvement happens, functional stability and pain relief are the most critical outcomes.

How long is recovery time after scoliosis surgery?

Initial recovery after scoliosis surgery in Israel typically involves 4 to 7 days of hospitalization followed by 2 to 4 weeks of home rest. Most patients return to routine activities or part-time work within 3 months, while full bony healing requires 12 months.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 4 to 7 days for monitoring and initial pain management protocols.
  • Initial recovery: Home recovery takes 2 to 4 weeks with restricted bending and lifting movements.
  • Work return: Patients generally resume routine or part-time work at the 3-month mark.
  • Full healing: Complete bone fusion and high-impact activity clearance typically require 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli centers like Sheba Medical Center prioritize mobility, often starting walking exercises with physical therapy only 1 day post-op. This early movement, combined with 3D O-arm navigation technology, helps verify implant placement immediately, potentially reducing the revision rates often seen in traditional open surgeries.

Patient Consensus: Expect to need 24/7 help with bathing and moving during the first 2 weeks. Patients emphasize not rushing recovery and avoiding heavy lifting until the 1-year mark when surgeons provide full clearance.

Where can I find the best hospitals in Israel for scoliosis treatment?

Israel hosts several world-class hospitals for scoliosis treatment, including Sheba Medical Center, Sourasky Medical Center, and Assuta Medical Center. These JCI-accredited facilities offer advanced API Fix and 3D O-arm navigation. Surgeons like Alon Friedlander and Ilya Pekarsky provide both minimally invasive and complex spinal reconstructions.

  • Sheba Medical Center: Ranked 7th worldwide by Newsweek and accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI).
  • Specialized techniques: Offering API Fix system implantation and Medtronic 3D O-arm surgical imaging technologies.
  • Expert surgeons: Doctors like Ilya Pekarsky at Assuta perform approximately 60 spinal surgeries monthly.
  • Treatment scope: Centers manage both pediatric congenital cases and complex adult spinal deformity corrections.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While public hospitals like Sheba handle the highest patient volumes, private centers like Assuta offer faster access to elite surgeons. Dr. Ilya Pekarsky and Dr. Eli Ashkenazi maintain high success rates by utilizing specialized implants like the TOPS System. Choosing a surgeon affiliated with a major public teaching hospital ensures access to the latest research-based protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of completing MRI or CT scans locally before traveling to streamline the surgical consultation process. Many highlight that globally ranked institutions like Sheba provide a high level of security for complex spinal deformity corrections.

Is non-surgical treatment available for scoliosis in Israel?

Non-surgical scoliosis treatments are widely available in Israel, focusing on stopping curve progression and managing pain. Certified specialists utilize the Schroth Method of physical therapy and custom 3D bracing. Early intervention in Joint Commission International-accredited facilities often prevents the need for invasive spinal fusion surgery.

  • Schroth Method: Specialized physical therapy using breathing and core exercises to stabilize spinal rotation.
  • Dynamic bracing: Custom 3D-printed Rigo Cheneau braces specifically designed for growing adolescents.
  • Pain management: Targeted steroid injections and anti-inflammatory regimens for adults with degenerative curves.
  • Motion-sparing tech: Minimally invasive ApiFix system serves as a bridge between conservative and surgical care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli protocols prioritize conservative therapy, typically costing between Price on request and Price on request . While top facilities like Sheba Medical Center are famous for surgery, they often recommend these non-operative programs first. This approach explains why many international patients seek help here even for mild curvatures.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that conservative methods like the Schroth Method require high daily commitment. They strongly recommend getting opinions from both a physiotherapist and a surgeon before starting any program.
